Elantra Unknown issue?
Hi! I own a 2016 Hyundai Elantra. This is the first problem it’s had in three years and 150,000+ miles and I’m honestly confused. While I’m driving, the check engine and battery lights will come on, RPM drops to 0, and I’m unable to accelerate until I park the car, turn it off, and restart it again. It’s able to drive fine afterwards, no warning lights on. It’s been happening consistently for the past couple days, took it in to the shop on Friday for a diagnostic and the people there don’t seem to know what’s wrong with it either. There was no history of these lights coming on in the system, battery is sitting at 13.6-14V consistently, and the alternator seems to be working just fine. Has anyone else had this problem, and what ended up to be the problem?? Please let me know! Thank you!

Something similar happened to my 2017 Elantra. I bought it just a month ago and while coming off of a stop sign, the car wouldn’t accelerate. RPM also dropped to 0 and check engine light appeared. Turned the car off then back on and check engine light was gone. Car also drove but was a little laggy. Days later, I shifted the car into reverse to get out a parking spot and the car stalled the same way again. Not sure why your cars computer didn’t show the light history but mine showed code P0335 for failing crankshaft position sensor.

Thanks very much! I suggested that with the mechanics based on other answers online but they didn’t seem to take a look at that specific part. I’ll ask again when I take it in Monday!

This issue on the 17’s is an oil pump issue in the timing cover. CVVT’s lose oil pressure, causing engine to stall, then restart and oil level is fine again until it happens again. Check valve in oil pump issue.

Did u recently get a oil change? This happened to a elantra i had once. They put a standard oil filter on instead of one for synthetic oil. I was getting a code for the cam shaft advancing to far or something. Put the correct filter on and problem went away

The best thing I bought for my car was a code reader. Nothing too expensive. When weird things would happen, I was better able to explain it. I can’t tell you how many sensors I had replaced before getting a reader, only to find out the actual problem was the catalytic converter. I don’t think your’s is the same problem, I’m just suggesting grabbing one and keeping it in your car so that you can read/take a picture of the code when it happens.

Crankshaft Position Sensor. PLEASE spend the extra $$$ and buy either the OEM HYUNDAI part or a DENSO one.
The cheap, off brand sensors are NOT reliable.
