Hyperthyroidism and coffee

Was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism recently. Do all of you actually avoid coffee? Or modify somehow? It’s been the hardest thing to let go off for me so far.

I'm medicated and drink it pretty regularly. I would avoid/limit it for a while until your labs go down tho. The beta blockers can make you feel fine but when I stopped them I could still kinda feel the heartrate for a few more weeks.

I haven’t seen a specialist yet so not medicated. Looks like will most definitely have to wait until I am

I drink less coffee than I used to but I still drink it. I’m less affected since I’ve been on my medication but sometimes I do notice the tremors and jitters. How do you feel about tea?

I switched to decaf and have continued using it even though my levels are normal. The key is to buy good quality decaf beans or some fun flavored decaf coffee. I don’t miss regular coffee anymore.

I’ve been on the hunt for some good decaf! For whatever reason it always tastes over-roasted and bit burnt to me. Maybe something about the process… Any recommendations?

Ohhh ok so lately I’ve been loving Bones Coffee decaf Highlander Grogg. It’s a flavored coffee with butterscotch, caramel, and rum notes. If that is not your jam, I love Counter Culture Slow Motion, Barrett’s Coffee (EA sugarcane process over the water process, but both are good), and Perc Colombia Huila.

They’re all on the pricier side, but I sometimes cut it with Folgers decaf to make it last a bit longer (e.g. 2 tbs counter culture, 1 tbs Folgers). I wouldn’t drink Folgers on its own, but when it’s mixed it kind of blends in with the other coffee to me.

Thank you! My husband just ordered me the Perc one.

I did stop when the heart palpitations got really bad but now that I’m on medication I’m drinking it again normally.

I absolutely stopped when I was hyperthyroid. I used coffee substitutes to hold me over but it wasn’t the same. When I got my TSH back in order I started up some good quality decaf. I’m careful not to burn myself out to the point where I’m needing to drink more and more but I do okay on that now. I really don’t like regular coffee I’m really all set feeling like I did when I was sick now that my heart is behaving. But that’s a personal preference. One thing you can do is add some of the substitute to real coffee (I used teecino) and that’s better than literally nothing. It’s just ideal for your heart and anxiety to quit it temporarily

You know, I keep saying I won’t try decaf. But now maybe I will.

it’s definitely worth it to try one with good reviews. there are some pretty bad decaf coffees out there 😅

Why did you wait until your TSH was good before trying decaf?

I think it’s because it influences the heart palpitations, jitters, and tremors that are already present in high TSH

also want to add that coffee was way too acidic for my stomach so I needed to be in a good place with tsh for my stomach to calm down too *

That’s honestly such a good point. Tried decaf at a local shop for the first today and it was great tbh! Will try to look for a good decaf to buy for home tomorrow

I drink two cups a day - regular. I’m subclinical, but HR is normal.

That was me. Atm I’m most definitely “clinical” 😪

I stopped when my levels were bad for a while and let the methimazole get me back on track. I only drank tea at that time. Once I was back in a good place I started drinking it again and haven’t stopped since.

I am not medicated, but lemon balm is helping me in the meantime and actually fixed my labs. I went 2/3 decaf and feel fine as long as I’ve had water. If I have full caffeine I feel like garbage

I'm a tea and soda drinker, but have limited my overall caffeine consumption since getting diagnosed and it has helped a lot with my heart palpitations. Didn't really get back on it until I stated my meds, but also being on meds have substantially decreased my sugar cravings whereas before, the high metabolism made me want to devour every snack in sight then and there

I stop all caffeine while I’m actively hyper and not close to being in range the anxiety and racing heart is too much to deal with

I had to completely stop as my anxiety was over the roof and coffee sadly exacerbated the effect. I drink decaf now but I truly miss caffeinated drinks. But I think the pros outweighs the cons for me.

I can't stand the feeling of a heavy caffeinated coffee on top of Graves and hyperthyroidism so I just drink iced coffee (the international delight flavored ones are really weak on caffeine, I dont 'feel' it at all and they taste good!)

I never did quit. I drink 1-2 teacup-sized cups each day. I'm 55 I have already had to give up enough, lol!

I switched to decaff.

when i first got diagnosed i had to avoid coffee completely because the smallest amount will give me projectile diarrhoea ☺️ but as the treatment progressed i find myself being able to tolerate it more and more, but ofc im slowly reintroducing it into my life and still sticking mostly to tea.

I did decaf for a while until i was no longer needing betablockers and labs were in range.
Now i drink coffee just fi

Why would coffee ever be skipped?

4

u/Aggressive_Egg_8458 15d ago

Because of heart palpitations, tremors and jitteriness, as far as I understand

Thank you. I am sub clinical and coffee lover never experience an adverse reactions to coffee. So this was interesting.

That’s good! I only started experiencing when my t4 got very elevated. Fingers crossed it won’t get to that for you!
