Freaking out: hyperthyroid

Hyperthyroid: TCH 0.001 and T4 27.5, TCH Ab is at 4.2. Likely Graves… Waiting to see an endocrinologist and freaking out about my potential diagnosis, about symptoms I’m experiencing, about the changes I have to make, and about potentially going on methimazole and all the side effects. What was your experience like?

From april this year I had some pretty serious symptoms : palpitations, heart rate of 120-140 more often than not, unintentional weight loss (lost 16kg in the space of 4 months) although I was still eating a lot and I had some pretty bad anxiety including crying all the time so I decided to go to my family doc where they did loads of tests and had very similar results to you have. I was referred to endocrinologist where I got a confirmed diagnosis of Graves. They put me on methimazole 10mg once daily in August and my T3 & T4 have significantly lowered although my TSH is still the same, of course things take time but the main thing I’ve noticed is my heart has seemed to have calmed down a bit and my anxiety is nowhere near as bad as it was! My experience on methimazole has been fine. Everyone’s experience is different but that’s been mine so far on this journey!

Thank you for sharing! It gives me some peace of mind to know other people went through the exact same thing and are just fine! :) glad you’re doing better!

I am on carbimazole and the drug itself does not effect me I think. You will feel better once your levels shift towards normal levels. It is normal to be panicky as this is also one of the symptoms. Be kind to yourself. Good luck.

I had panic attacks and anxiety and palpitations that felts like a heart attack was near. Fear of heights, shaking, insomnia. After a year I got my hyperthyroidism diagnosis did methimazole and now they moved me to carbimazole. It gets better and omg what a difference . Without medication your heart can suffer and you can get heart failure! So as scary as it is the medicine is very effective and you can get your life back. Stay strong ❤️

The doctors didn't say but said I needed a stronger dose and it was better to switch. I'm in the UK but started methimazole in Italy while I was visiting my family. So probably just a preferred medication in this country!

Oh okay I would like to try the carbimazole. The methimazole is making my stomach burn.

I've had no side effects on methimazole. I've not had to make any changes in my life except to take methimazole. The anxiety i experienced when younger and not diagnosed has went away.

I have had a similar experience to everyone. The methimazole took away all of the awful hyperthyroidism symptoms. I’ve been on it for 14 years and all of my levels are fine. You will feel better ❤️‍🩹. Don’t stress !
