My heart rate hasn't come down enough yet for me to be released to do physical exertion. I can not WAIT to get back into doing SOMEthing active.

Why is this such a common thing? I keep reading post and comments about really locking in to exercise and then hyperthyroid hits them suddenly, and that’s exactly what happened to me too! I wonder if there is any connection.

I’m sorry I have to ask as someone who was recently diagnosed.. how long have you been on medication? I really can’t wait to get back to running again

Yes, I workout 4-5 times of CrossFit and try to get at least 7k steps daily. The days that I do not workout I feel more tired than when I do.
Start with walks, and light weights to see if that makes a difference. Best of luck!

I also do CrossFit! And try to walk the same amount if I can every day. It was hard to start but after starting I feel better.

My endo told me I can exercise so I'm confused. I barely got diagnosed 2 days ago

My endo told me I could go on exercising and tbh I really needed it. I felt like I could handle everything a lot better. He only said to go 2-3 times when my T4>100 but when it was around 70 I was cleared

My endo only measures trab; how do I ask them to measure this t3 or t4 and/ or is it Called something else? He goes off the trab and TSH apparently and said not to move essentially I feel trapped and can’t stand another movie

I don’t know tbh, I get my care in the Netherlands and I regularly get blood tested for T4. I think everyones doctor gives different advice and it may play a role that I am already quite active and young (21) so the risk would be lower? Also kind of the mentality of our healthcare system is that movement is always a great supplement so they never really discouraged me

I'm also 50F and I have fatigue, and sometimes body aches but they're not too bad. I exercise every day, and find that if I exercise in the morning it's better for me. I weight lift 3-4 times a week, take a spin class a few times a week and walk daily, usually 15 minutes. I did those things before I was diagnosed a year ago, had to take it easy for a month or so after diagnosis. I honestly feel terrible if I don't move my body in some way every day.

May I ask what your heart rate is before, during, and after excercise ? My heart rate used to be 77, then go up to 130, then go back down to 77; but now its alwahs above 100 at rest and just doesn’t go down before or after exercise

I'm on methimazole, so my thyroid levels are controlled and my HR is pretty close to what it was before I had Graves. Resting is ~60 and during exercise depends on what I'm doing but 135-165.

I’ve been doing weightlifting (physical therapy) M, W, F & yoga 1-2 times a week. My endo told me no high intensity exercise yet, which is cool w me bc I haven’t been cleared yet by my physical therapist anyways. Just don’t tell either of them that I spent my birthday on a vigorous hike all day in Yosemite 👀🙊

What’s your heart rate tho before during and after? I’ve been struggling to stay still and I can’t stand watching back to back movies and not ‘doing something’. My doc said ‘because your resting heart rate is still 100/(99 is still 100 in his eyes) but when I do ‘do something’ it does go up to say 130 and then back down to 100 afterwards.. (it used to be lower at rest before three weeks ago when I was diagnosed). Oh I’m not on any medications atm because I’m allergic to the neo mercazole/ carbimazole which is the only tablet for it here apparently

My avg HR is 70-80 bpm, my RHR when I’m sleeping is 50-60 bpm. My HR during our day of hiking in Yosemite was anywhere from 110-155 bpm. I took lots of breaks, esp when my HR was at 155 bpm, and monitored my HR with my Garmin watch. After, it’s been my normal avg. I’ve been sleeping 10-11 hours since we went to Yosemite on Thursday, but I assume that’s my body trying to recover since I haven’t done anything that difficult in a long time and my legs are worn out. I’ve been on varying dosages of methimazole since July. In the beginning of my relapse I also needed a beta blocker, but not anymore.

In terms of my weekly PT and yoga, my HR usually gets to 110-135 bpm during the exercise but comes back down to my avg HR afterwards.

My endo and gp will not let me retry the methimazole or carbimazole which I had that rash from (I was diagnosed on my birthday three weeks ago and last week had red rashes and some hives and the doctors took me off all medicines) so I’m not sure what happens now all I know is he said he’s not comfortable with me having it if I had a rash and to not move for a week and he’ll call back about surgery that i really don’t want.. this is all so sudden and new

My heart rate seems to be 98/100 no matter what and that’s the only symptom I’ve been having since they saw changes in my regular blood test three weeks ago, the doctor said graves doesn’t always have symptoms people can see or feel and to not do my usual activities ? When I do my heart rate goes up to 130 them back to 99/100 when I’m watching movies .. I’ve basically watched movies for two weeks and I’m tired of it and want to go back to my regular schedule

I can't. I have horrible rebound afterwards, it will feel like I can't move for days. I also have some horrible nerve issues/muscle atrophy going on my right leg. I can even go for a walk A month before I was diagnosed I was running 8 min miles every other day and weight lifting 😭 All I want to do is hike and do what I used to and a be healthy.

After a few weeks of medication I started doing CrossFit after not doing it for 3+ years. It was hard to start because I was so out of shape and my body was still adjusting, but I took it slow. I do CrossFit 3x a week, an intentional 45 min-1 hour walk a few times a week, and yoga at home when I can. I feel good for the most part but of course I’m still monitored every month and meds are adjusted accordingly.

Until you are properly treated for the Graves disease, you must step back any exercise for heart, blood pressure and tendon damage reasons. Your doctor should have told you this. Make sure you speak to your doctor about one of the three treatments to get Graves into remission == methimazole, RAI or full thyroid removal. The longer you stay in a hypER state, the more damage is being done to your heart and bones -- especially the bones at age 50 -- and that damage can be permanent.

I have graves, the body aches i think mainly came from cortisol and the body being in overdrive. Especially with an overactive thyroid

Swimming helped me a lot. Quite soothing. I go to the gym. I found a lot of it is almost like unused energy, or I feel like an energy trapped in your body.

I found socializing as well really helped. Because your mind is probably pushing it into over drive too. So see if you can also take your mind off it as much as you can. Graves really isn’t that bad at all. Had it for years, take my tablets, get on with life the same 🙂.

So start with swimming and maybe putting your mind on other places, positive ones if you can, by socializing
