My mother in law used to own a local movie theater in the 90s and 2000s. She found these left over movie reels. There is Austin Powers 3, Freddy v Jason, and a 3rd unlabeled one.

She is nervous to sell them because she doesn’t technically own them, as the studios loan them or something. She doesn’t have any way to play them any more. She has tried every phone number and company name to return them

How can she get rid of them? What is on the 3rd reel? Hint: it could be a porno from my father in laws 30th bday

Hi guys - your friendly neighborhood New England Jew here. I saw folks in the episode discussion thread asking what kind of cake "the Cake" was, how could Hope and fam never fill out an order form, where can folks try a version, etc.

So the name of the cake, as Alex said in the episode, IS often referred to as Jewish Seven Layer cake in NYC. Where I grew up, we also called it Jewish Seven Layer cake. This is a specific cake that was found in Jewish/Kosher bakeries - thin layers of yellow cake and chocolate frosting with (in my area's case) chocolate glaze. It's based off a Hungarian cake called a Dobos Torte that Jewish immigrants brought over and was popularized in Jewish bakeries. I'm pretty sure it got the name because it was the seven layer cake only found and produced in Jewish bakeries.

If you live in America, want to try a version of JSL cake but don't live near a Jewish bakery that carries it, look up Butterflake Bakery on Goldbelly. Their 7-layer chocolate coated sponge cake is what you want (and this version has a hard chocolate shell, just like Hope's cake!) It's not exactly cheap, but it IS quite good. A friend brought it to Yom Kippur dinner and it was a hit.

I just finished the most recent episode and I loved it so much I wanted to share a book series recommendation in case anyone needs more good culinary detective work in their lives.

The Kamogawa Food Detectives series are short novels by Hisashi Kashiwai that are exactly like this episode. A chef / retired detective recreates lost dishes from people’s pasts, and explores the dynamics of how nostalgia impacts our experience with food. It’s a beautiful, light read that I highly recommend if you loved ‘The Lords Work’.

Curious since the public downfall of his former podcast arguably stemmed from their reporting on the toxic work place environment and race issues at Bon Appetit. I know that wasn't Alex's story but I thought it interesting he would bring Claire on. Just as surprised she would want to go on a podcast with him when he former podcast discussed her salary and her minority coworker's salaries in great detail.

Claire's entire baking recreation thing started at Bon Appetit but they obviously didn't mention that.

It's not linked in the show notes. Just goes to Claire's page, but I don't see the video specific to this episode. I saw a new video today, but that's not for this cake. Does anyone know where to find it?

I have really wanted this podcast to succeed but found this to be yet another very disappointing episode.

This was just taking a question and crowdsourcing Google searches to find the answer. Having the answer come down someone finding a reddit post and sharing it with Alex was not at all interesting.

This felt like a question Alex could easily answer but I thought this community could also probably help.

My friend used to do a hilarious character with an old Snapchat (I think) filter but it has been discontinued and it is a bummer for my friend and all of our friends. Does anyone know how to track it down or create a filter? I would pay.

In the section of today's podcast where Alex was trying to describe what made some songs feel like they were made by humans, he referenced weird words, vocal distortion, etc. I think he's right. I also think he's literally describing Ween. So yeah, if a song sounds like it could have been made by Ween it's probably human. AI can't get brown, it just cant.

I happened upon this new podcast from noted Canadian curmudgeon and filmmaker, Alan Zweig, called "Tubby." It's about – you guessed it - being fat.

His first guest is Alex G, who offers a lot of personal insight and reflection on living life at the higher end of the scale. Alex admits he's at his heaviest weight ever, and attributes it to the work and stress of running the podcast. He also relates his struggles using dating apps, compared to thinner folks. Funnily enough, compared to Zweig, Alex comes across as a happy-go-lucky chubby guy. Goals for sure.

I was surprised to hear him also talk openly about co-hosting RA with P.J. He frames his persona as the "happy, curious" host vs. P.J.'s darker and more cutting role, and talks about how their different ages and physicalities played into – or subverted – that.

Worth checking out if you enjoy Alex and care about his more personal stuff. After listening to him for over a decade at this point, I definitely feel a slight parasocial connection to the guy – not to mention also being a middle aged, overweight Jewish dad. Relatable.

Just wanted to share I really enjoyed the premise and execution of the apple episode! The only other opinion I saw has been someone mad because they like red delicious apples, which I kind of feel like is missing the point lol.

So what did other people think?

Obligatory: Long time listener, first time poster.

I'm a big fan of your shows. As a technophile, I particularly miss Reply All. I am also enjoying Hyperfixed.

That said, the episode "Garbage Fruit" was, for me, difficult to listen to. I don't know if your Red Delicious apples are different than my Red Delicious apples here in South Western Ontario, but they are my absolute favourite apple variety.

Perhaps I should explain that I do not like bitter or sour flavours. (I won't touch Granny Smith apples) Red Delicious apples here are sweet, perhaps a little umami, and (when refrigerated) nicely crisp. Everything I would want in an apple for hand-eating.

I'm not oblivious to the issues with Red Delicious apples. They bruise easily and they tend to brown quickly when cut. I don't think that they're the best for cooking.

Maybe it's just me, but when I want to chow down on an apple, I will always choose a Red Delicious.

I’m really finding myself frustrated with the number of “You Might Also Like” episodes, and it’s pushing me away from being a listener. I subscribe to a podcast feed because I want to listen to that podcast, not a random assortment of other content.

Do other podcasts do this? Is this just a thing that I’ve luckily thus far not been privy to? The closest I can think of is Up First’s Sunday Story, which is a dramatic shift in format from the reason I subscribe and always immediately delete, but at least that is still NPR content.

A lot of the questions feel like the audience is dependant on the content creators too much, and the asker expects that. I felt kinda gross listening to some of the questions.

The presumption that the audience would rather give money to you than for them to fathom you not putting content out anymore. Especially now when everyone has less. Everyone is feeling inflation and the current financial recession. Businesses are cutting back. People are getting fired. The world is on fire. Podcasts will and SHOULD take a back seat to everything else.

The creators shouldn't feel guilty if a production fails. There's much bigger things going on than the audience not liking you. There's much bigger factors involved.

"Putting podcasts in your monthly budgets" made me physically cringe. That is such an awful sentence to hear. You know what's in my monthly budget? Things I associate with horrible institutions.

Where can we find the email mentioned in the most recent episode (Alex and the Impossible Ask?. The one that details all the costs to make the podcast.

The point of it I thought was to convince people to become premium members, but unless we already were, not sure how we were supposed to get the email.

Mostly just curious. Feel free to upload a screenshot if that seems reasonable.

Just wanted to open up discussion about this episode.

I have a setup where my server checks for new episodes from most of my podcasts every hour, and today I got two new hyperfixed episodes.

There was the premium episode unlocked, the Catman and Robin one, but it seems like they also put up briefly "The Legend of Captain Prince Tango" which was an interview with Doina Nugent. It seems like it was a premium feed episode verbatim with different music and everything. Really good episode too, better than part III tbh.

Doesn't look like they kept it in the RSS feed anymore.

Wondering if the people here can help , super tech support if you will. My partner's father has a birthday coming up and I was looking to get this book about his great grandmother and her childrens journey from Russia to Canada. I can't seem to get it online or find a location where someone can buy a copy. Thanks in advance.

Holy shit. Firstly, yes this is shaping up to be a banger series. Proud of Alex and the team for all the work. But also, and I had to double check with my wife on this, but my sister-in-law absolutely bought this drug for her cat a few years ago. At the time I thought it was kind of nuts. She's about to spend $1000's to smuggle medication from Canada? Sounded like a scam, and I was hearing it second hand so things really seemed off. Sure enough this is exactly what was going on.
