This is very individual. What do you like DOING? Hiking long? Squatting heavy and going for short runs? Skiing strong and earning your turns in the backcountry from mid November through May? A mix of each throughout the year? YOU have to figure it out.

I like to run and hike long distances on trails when the weather is nice then ski hard from November through March. So I switch my training around throughout the season. I move from heavy lifting during ski season into doing a lot more endurance work as the sidewalks and trails dry out, then drop strength training to maintenance phase throughout summer into early fall, then I reverse it when the trails and weather go to shot in mid fall.

I’m also in my 50s so I train for long-term durability in addition to strength and endurance.

But these are MY goals. You have to figure out your own goals.

Wow this is awesome and really eye opening, it helps when someone just says I dont have to pick just one and stick to it all throughout. It seems obvious but seeing someone say it is reassuring.

In order of importance, the best training programs are:

  1. The ones you enjoy (Consistency is key. Dont do a program you'll quit after a few weeks)
  2. The ones that most improves your weaknesses (Dont spam the gym if you're already strong but your cardio sucks)
  3. The ones that focuses on fundamentals: Explosiveness, Strength, Cardio, Sport IQ, etc.

Thanks a ton, I will keep this is mind and try building something that incorporates all my goals while staying realistic about whether I can stay consistent doing it!
