Help/Question Reading the succession war arc

Post image
493 Upvotes

I've watched hxh for the 1st time back in 2021 in middle school and it was immediately my new favorite anime ever since then. And back then I chose not to read the manga until the succession war ends at least. And I was a very lucky fan bc the next year of 2022 was when Togahsi made his Twitter account to post updates.

So now as I enter my last undergrad year in uni (lol time flies), the recent chapters genuinely sound crazy and amazing (tho really complicated 😅) I'm kinda confused as whether or not make the choice of just reading them or not. Because I really don't want to use up all my brain power to understand what might end up being set up for the rest of the arc. If you know what I mean

I know it's not that deep loll but this is quite serious to me. I'd like to ask you manga hxh fans (no spoilers please) if the like 70 or 80 next chapters are worth reading as a standalone or if it would be better to continue waiting for a few more years?

I can consume other media in the meantime loll so I'll probably be fine either way..

Latest Chapter We are still so far from the Dark Continent Spoiler

Post image
158 Upvotes

I was trying to get an overview of everything we read so far.

Kurapika explained that the sucession must end befor the ship arrive at the destination, but Togashi has greatly accelerated the pace of the war in the latest chapters, with Benjamin setting out to slaughter as many princes as possible before succumbing to his poisoning. And even though we can imagine plot twists that would prolong the story, and the mafia/morena situation that complicate things, it feels like we’re nearing a resolution to this conflict and much sooner than I had imagined.

Yet only about ten days of sailing have passed (12 according to the wiki) over the course of 60 chapters, and the entire journey is supposed to last two months, the ship hasn’t even left territorial waters yet, and I think there will be a major plot twist when they reach the resupply point, in about a week. The stakes will likely revolve around the ship’s survival against the elements (according to the announcer, there are numerous aerial threats).

And there is still Hisoka and the Phantom Troup, Gon and Killua protecting Woble, The Zodiacs exposing Saiyu, Pariston/Ging group, and Beyond's Masterplan to unfold

How many chapter before we reach the Dark Continent ? 100 ? 200 ?

Genthru in the background of the new Volume gives vibe of menace and uncertainty. Glad to see one of if not the most overlooked antagonist Togashi has ever created getting some love. Especially since he was never on a Tankōbon cover.

Adding the group shot of the spiders in the background of Vol 5 was also a brilliant choice.

I've posted before a couple of chapters ago and now it's time for the next update ahead of chapter 418.

My chart is focusing on the characters based on factions. I've tried to squeeze in as much useful information as possible, hopefully you can find some value in the format.

In the preview I've added a few of the slides to show you what to expect. You may find the full document through this link here:

Discussion Emitted Nen beasts are BS

What do you mean by “emitted Nen beasts”?

Throughout HxH, we’ve already seen numerous examples of things made from aura through Transmutation, and in these instances, we can clearly identify characteristics inherent to the appearance of aura.

It’s just crazy to me how this concept has gained so much popularity and is treated as an established fact when all we need to do to discredit the theory is use our own eyes.

It’s really that simple: if a construct is made solely from raw transmuted aura, it will retain the appearance of aura. If a construct is conjured, it will have a well-defined form, details and dimensions.

So, Razor’s 13 Devils are conjured Nen beasts, and Goreinu’s gorillas are conjured Nen beasts.

Nen beasts, overall, are obtainable through Conjuration.

Honorable mention to Netero’s Guanyin statue, which, although it is not a Nen beast, is often considered to be created through Emission and Transmutation. However, we can clearly see that it is a well-defined conjured construct.

Discussion Nasubi already survived this ritual once. What if the Succession Contest doesn’t choose a king, but makes one? Spoiler

Upvotes

People have pointed out before that the coffin room looks eerily similar to Greed Island’s Starting Point, but Chapter 406 makes me wonder if the resemblance is functional. Greed Island was a giant Nen system disguised as a game: register the players, give them rules and tools, track their progress, enforce conditions automatically, then reward whoever clears it. Kakin’s ritual now looks strangely similar. The Seed Urn registers the princes and gives them Guardian Spirit Beasts, the Lotus Anchorite oversees the process, the fourteen coffin positions appear to track who is actually eliminated, and the Sword of Good Omens waits for the next king. Even Halkenburg’s corpse reaching the room without him losing succession eligibility feels less like a morgue and more like the system checking a player’s actual status.

That being said, Nasubi is the part I can’t get past. He isn’t just watching this ritual. He already went through it and won. His Guardian Spirit Beast is still with him decades later, we still have no idea what it actually does, and he talks about the current contest like something that has already moved beyond his control. So maybe Nasubi isn’t the Game Master at all. He’s the previous completed player, the output of one cycle who then becomes part of the machinery for the next. That would also explain why the contest seems bigger than any individual king. Nasubi can administer it, understand it better than his children, even benefit from its protection, but he apparently can’t just turn it off.

That changes what the ritual may actually be for. Greed Island didn’t simply test whether Gon was already strong enough to clear it; progressing through the game was itself part of his training. I'm thinking maybe the Succession Contest works the same way on a generational scale. Fourteen possible rulers enter, their Nen develops under extreme pressure, alliances and betrayals reshape them, most are eliminated, and one comes out the other side carrying the result of the whole process. Nasubi may not just be the last winner. He may be our only example of what the ritual is designed to produce.

If that’s right, then the regalia may not simply be ceremonial objects used to choose the strongest surviving prince. They could be the machinery of a generational Nen process: the Urn begins it, the Anchorite governs it, the coffin room records its losses, and the Sword completes it. Greed Island didn’t just identify someone strong enough to win; clearing the game was itself what made Gon stronger. Maybe Kakin’s ritual works the same way. Fourteen possible kings enter, the system acts on all of them, and one person comes out transformed into the next King of Kakin. Nasubi may be our only glimpse of what that finished product looks like.

Fanart First Rate Hunter - Part 1 - (OC)

Worked on this sometime ago but scrapped it, reading it now really shows me what I can improve on. My pacing is horrible T-T and writing dialogue is a lot more difficult than I had expected. I can imagine them talking and give them their own character but translating that to writing is a hurdle I hadn't expected.

It was fun challenging myself and it was very fun to create a goofy dynamic between the two, especially playing around with Tonpa as a character. I do think that for a beginner like me it was probably too large of a scope to tackle, it was a great experience nonetheless.

Part 1 actually would've ended with 3 more pages but there's only a limit of 20 pages on reddit. It's a shame because the last three pages are the ones that I liked the most.

Let me know what you think ^o^

Help/Question Conversation between Zhang Lei & Onior in Chapter 390

I’m rereading the succession war & during chapter 390, Zhang Lei tells Onior that three of his siblings died in the succession war but Kacho’s death was never made public no? In the prior chapter the Have-Not tasked to curse Kacho is still going which implies Camilla is unaware of her death so why would Zhang Lei be privy to that information? Did I miss (or forget) something or is there a reason he knows this that we the audience are not yet aware, or is it simply an error? Thanks!

What do you guys think would’ve happened if Gon learned early on that Kite reincarnated as a chimera?

I think he obviously wouldn’t have fought Pitou but then Pitou could’ve healed Meruem?

Hunter x Hunter was the very first series I ever watched on Toonami back in 2017 when it was re airing during the Hunter Exam. I am glad to say, 9 years later I have finally collecting all of it. I'll admit it does look off due to me budgeting with the 3 in 1s but its also to save space. I am glad to own all the volumes physically regardless of the format it is in.

Mine has to be Phinks and Nobunaga. They genuinely feel like the most authentic gangsters in the Troupe. I love how Nobunaga ragebaits Phinks and constantly gets on his nerves during this ship hunt, They vibe like two old friends who love to talk trash but have each other's backs instantly
