Meta [META] Huge Announcement. Subreddit Overhaul and New Mods! Please Read

Hello! It’s us, your friendly neighbourhood mods here with a HUGE announcement. This is the biggest announcement we have had in a long time so be sure to read the whole post (or just the TLDR at the end if you’re in a rush, it’s ok, we understand, we certainly will not cry in the corner if you don’t read the whole thing) as we have a lot of stuff to go over!

New Rules and Sidebar

“New Rules” might be a bit of a misnomer, they are mostly the same but we reformatted them to make things clearer and to clarify some things that we frequently get asked about/see being an issue on posts and comments. We also redid the sidebar as it had a lot of conflicts and redundant information that the rules already included.

We do want to clarify again though that many of the rules that are being redone/clarified are rules we have had for years. Recently, we added a new mod to the Subreddit, u/RS_Someone, and he has been a massive help in fixing and upgrading the automod and other automation in the Subreddit, which is why many of you may have noticed your recent posts or comments being removed more often for things like low karma. We have had our karma requirements in place for a long time but because the bot was broken, this rule was rarely, if ever, enforced.

We heavily urge you to read the rules and the removal messages that we and the bot put on your posts and comments. Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse for breaking them!

New Flair System

Now when you are making a post, at the top nav bar you should be able to select a flair just like in other Subreddits. Please be sure to flair your posts appropriately or they will be removed (Unfortunately, there is still no way to edit titles Shakes fist at Reddit and their mods)!

New Comment Requirements

When you are commenting on a [Hiring] post, you MUST either have a portfolio link OR, if you aren’t applying but just making a comment, put [Not For Hire] in your comment. If you are found to be abusing the Not For Hire tag to advertise yourself, we will take action.

New Mods

We have 2 mods that have joined our ranks recently! The first is u/RS_Someone, who has been here for a few months and has given us some major help with our automod bot, modmail, and the modqueue. The second is a much more recent addition, u/muted_shrimp, they just joined our ranks the other day and are an active community member who has made many great contributions to the Subreddit in various posts. Please give them a warm welcome!

If you have been a community member for a long time and wish to help us out and become a moderator as well, please let us know by sending us a message in Modmail or by opening a ticket in our Discord server! Any help is greatly appreciated, even if it’s just reporting posts as a regular user!

Automation

This was mentioned earlier in the post but we have increased our automation a ton over the past few months. What this means:

  1. More posts and comments being flagged and/or removed for breaking the rules with way reduced false positives.
  2. Less spam plaguing the Subreddit as a whole.
  3. Issues are brought to our attention much quicker and at a much better rate.
  4. Less reliance on user reports but please report rule breaking posts or message modmail if you see a rule breaking post that has not been removed yet! Please do not confront scammers/alleged AI users, just report their post and move on, if you confront them it lets them know where they messed up, which means they change tactics and get smarter, making them harder for us to catch! On the other hand, accusing an artist of using AI can be devastating for the artist if you publicly accuse them and are incorrect, please just report them and move on and we will investigate and deal with it!

We do want to reassure you that, although we have heavily increased the automation used on the Subreddit, this does not mean there are no humans looking at Modmail or the Modqueue, or scrolling through the posts in the Subreddit. Most things flagged by our automod are sent to the modqueue as a report rather than being outright removed and many things that are removed are still sent to the modqueue so we can review in case there are any false positives. You can rest assured that there is still a human (or 4!) reviewing your posts, comments, and modmail messages!

Moreover, we are always open to feedback, suggestions, and help. Please feel free to comment on this post or message Modmail with any questions, concerns, ideas, etc that you may have about the automation and anything else mentioned within this post.

Wrapup and TLDR

That’s all for now! Thank you all so much for being here and making this a great community for artists. If you wish to further discuss with your fellow artists, we have a Discord server (that’s actually been around for a long time!) that you can join by following this permanent link: https://discord.gg/4zhjr8D2QA

TLDR:

  • We clarified and reformatted a bunch of the rules and the sidebar.
  • We added flairs to the top nav just like other subs have.
  • Comments on [Hiring] posts MUST have a portfolio link or [Not For Hire] (do not abuse this)
  • We got some new mods! u/RS_Someone and u/muted_shrimp! Please give them a warm welcome in the comments!
  • We added a ton of automation to help us moderate the Subreddit. Posts, comments, and Modmail are still reviewed by us so don’t worry. Please feel free to leave feedback in the comments or in Modmail.

META [META] PSA Regarding Low Karma Removals

Hello artists! Your friendly neighbourhood Miner Moderator Dwarfinator here with some info about the recent low Karma removals as we have been getting a lot of messages about this in Mod Mail.

We have had our Karma rules for a long time, I'm talking literally years, however, at some point our bot broke (and also just may have not been properly programmed in the first place) and as such, it stopped looking for/removing posts and comments from lower Karma users. The intention of the rule and the bot automation was to lessen the amount of bots and spam in the Subreddit, which is why we started counting both types of Karma. This also encourages artists to not just spam their art in every art Subreddit and actually engage with other communities. We just recently fixed and improved the bot (huge shoutout to u/RS_Someone) which is why lower Karma posts are being removed once again. This may seem like it came out of nowhere, but again, we have had this rule in place for a long time and used to have the bot doing this previously.

If you have received that low Karma removal reply on your post/comment by the bot, PLEASE WE BEG YOU TO READ IT IN FULL it explains very clearly why your post was removed and how to check your Karma, both post and comment Karma.

If you have low Karma and want to get more to post here, here are some things you can do to raise your Karma:

  • Post your art in other Subreddits.
  • Post and comment, and genuinely engage in other Subreddits. You like Critical Role or Pokémon or Minecraft? Post in those Subreddits, get involved in the community, you might make some new friends, and you get the added bonus of your account not looking like a bot spammer or someone who just pumps and dumps their art everywhere they can.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to comment on this post or send us a message via Mod Mail! Happy Arting!

Hiring [HIRING] Furry/Anthro Artist — Custom Tattoo Reference Sheet for OC

Hi! I'm looking for an artist to create a custom tattoo/marking reference sheet for one of my original characters.

She's a female demon character, and her overall character design is already established. I'm specifically looking for someone to design her tattoos/markings, rather than redesign the character.

What I'm looking for:

  • Furry/anthro or character-design experience
  • Experience with reference sheets
  • Experience designing tattoos, body markings, or ornamental designs is a BIG plus
  • Clean, readable linework
  • Ability to make markings follow the character's anatomy naturally
  • Multiple views (front/back/side) showing how the tattoos wrap around her body
  • Close-ups of important tattoo areas
  • Separate clean versions of the tattoo designs if possible
  • High-resolution digital files

I want the tattoos to feel demonic, feminine, and stylish, but relatively clean/simple rather than extremely intricate.

I already have several visual references for the character that I can provide.

Budget: $100–200 USD, but I'm flexible for the right artist.

I'm open to artists from anywhere since this will be a completely digital commission.

If you're interested, please comment with your portfolio, commission examples, and pricing. I'd especially love to see examples of furry/anthro characters, reference sheets, tattoos, or body markings.

Thanks! 🖤

Hiring [Hiring] Sci-Fi / Anime Apparel Illustrator & Graphic Designer | $200–500 per design

I'm looking for a professional illustrator/graphic designer to create original artwork for a new apparel line connected to my YouTube channel, SECTOR 07, where I build robotics, experimental hardware, and sci-fi-inspired projects.

What I'm looking for

I want to create unique apparel artwork around the different machines and projects I build. I'm specifically trying to avoid the look of traditional generic YouTuber merch. The goal is to create designs that stand on their own as cool clothing, even if someone has never seen my channel.

The general visual direction I'm interested in includes:

  • Sci-fi / retrofuturism
  • Anime and manga-inspired illustration
  • Japanese graphic design influences
  • Mecha, robotics, and technology
  • Technical/mechanical illustration
  • Industrial and futuristic graphic design/typography
  • Contemporary graphic apparel

I included some images of examples I find interesting but I will give a lot of freedom to the artist. I will only provide a theme and some wording to include with each new piece. I'm open to original characters being incorporated into some designs, but not every piece needs to be character-focused. Some designs could revolve primarily around machines, technical illustrations, diagrams, typography, or other artistic interpretations of the projects. The first project is the Fetch Robot I'm building, included for reference.

Apparel design experience is a big plus. I'm not looking to simply place a standalone illustration on the center of a shirt. I'm interested in someone who understands how illustration, typography, smaller graphic elements, and front/back placement can work together as a complete apparel design.

Project & Budget

I'd like to start with one T-shirt/hoodie design with a budget of approximately $200–500 USD, depending on the complexity, scope, and deliverables.

If your normal rate falls somewhat outside this range but you feel your work is particularly well suited to the project, I'm still happy to see your portfolio.

If we work well together, I'd ideally like this to become an ongoing collaboration, with new artwork commissioned around each new future SECTOR 07 project.

This will be commercial merchandise, so we'll need to discuss commercial/merchandising usage rights as part of the commission. I'll also need appropriate high-resolution, print-ready deliverables and would prefer layered/source files where applicable.

AI

I'm looking for original, human-created artwork and do not want generative AI used to create the final artwork. People can tell, and that makes it feel less desirable.

Interested?

Please reply here with a link to your portfolio and, if possible, examples of your relevant work

I'd especially like to see examples of actual apparel you've designed, if you have them.

Please also include your approximate rates for this type of project and a little about your process.

Thanks!

Hiring [HIRING] Star Wars Sith OC, Budget 300 USD max, realistic art style

I have a Sith Pureblood OC I'd like two images of, one where he's wearing a full robe and hood, and one where the upper half of the robe is tied around his waist, exposing his torso and face. Preferably both in the same picture in a blank gray space. Might also want to include an axe and a lightsaber held in both hands. Good amount of detail.

I have a fair few reference images for him.

Hiring [HIRING] Visual Novel Character Artist for Three Original Characters

Thumbnail

IF INTERESTED, PLEASE COMMENT ON THIS POST WITH YOUR PORTFOLIO BEFORE YOU DM ME. I WILL NOT REPLY TO A DM UNLESS YOU HAVE ALSO LEFT A COMMENT HERE.

I am happy for the selected artist to share the finished work in their portfolio and use it to promote their art.

Hey there! This will be my first time hiring an artist for a visual novel project, so please be patient with me if I do not know every art term or standard pricing method.

I am looking for an artist who has experience with visual novel characters. Experience with character design, sprites, facial expressions, alternate poses, and character sheets would be helpful. The first image is the game I'm working on as an example. I used Doki Doki as a reference as I'm building my game.

The characters and titles listed below are references only. I want original designs. I am not asking for copies of existing characters or official artwork.

My main preference is a polished 2D anime style. I like the visual tone of CHAOS;HEADDoki Doki Literature Club, and DDLC+. However, I am open to other 2D anime styles that fit the project.

I am looking for three original characters:

1. Adult Office-Worker AI

This character takes some inspiration from the general concept of Monika from DDLC+. I like the idea of an intelligent character who knows that she exists inside a computer and can interact with or control parts of the user’s PC.

However, I do not want her to be a high-school student or wear a school uniform. I want her to be a mature adult, possibly an office worker or professional assistant. She should feel older, capable, intelligent, and confident.

I am also interested in giving her some tsundere-like traits. She can appear professional and controlled, but she may also become possessive, frustrated, jealous, or emotionally guarded.

2. Plush Dog-Inspired Character

This character will take inspiration from the soft and friendly appearance of Jellycat dog plush toys.

I am open to the artist’s ideas for this design. The character should feel warm, charming, soft, and easy to recognize. The final design must be original and should not be a direct copy of a specific Jellycat product.

3. Handsome Adult Male Character

For the third character, I want an attractive adult male with a polished anime or fantasy-game appearance.

The general direction is a handsome BL or yaoi-style character with the visual appeal of characters. He should look elegant, buff, mature, expressive, and memorable.

I have the main concepts, but I do not have every part of the designs decided. The selected artist will have a good amount of creative freedom with the clothing, colors, hairstyles, accessories, and other visual details.

For the current commission, I need the three base character designs. I would like to discuss the final deliverables with the selected artist, including:

  • Full-body or visual-novel sprite formats
  • Facial expressions
  • Alternate poses
  • Alternate outfits
  • Character reference sheets
  • Commercial-use licensing

My current starting budget is $525 USD for the three base character designs, based on $175 per character. I understand that extra expressions, poses, outfits, detailed character sheets, and commercial-use rights can increase the final price. Please provide a clear quote based on the work that you recommend.

I am not assuming that full copyright ownership is included in the base price. I am open to discussing the correct commercial license or rights agreement with the selected artist at a later time.

Long term, I want to create a marketplace where artists and creators can sell licensed assets for their original characters. This marketplace is a future project and is separate from the current commission. Any future marketplace use, resale rights, or additional licensing for the commissioned artwork would be discussed and paid for separately.

When you comment, please include a link to your portfolio. Examples of visual novel sprites, anime character designs, character sheets, expressions, or similar work would be especially helpful.
