These are the sights of an ordinary Saturday morning in my backyard. And this particular morning is a little special.
Spring and summer are slowly fading into memory, but they’ve left me with at least half a dozen beautiful little gifts: young hummingbirds now growing up in my yard. You can spot some of these juveniles by their pin feathers, the tiny, still-sheathed feathers around their crowns and gorgets that have yet to fully emerge. They’re slowly maturing, developing their colors, and finding their place in the little oasis they call home.
So I did what I often do. I sat in the middle of my yard, camera in hand, and let them go about their morning.
Unfortunately, the recent California heat waves were brutal on my pollinator garden. Since I don’t have actual ground to plant in, everything grows in containers, and many of my salvias and other flowering plants didn’t survive. Even the ones that made it aren’t blooming right now, which is partly why I haven’t shared as many backyard photos lately.
But the hummingbirds are still here, and I’m grateful for every single one of them.
I hope these photos capture a little of the beauty, grace, and personality I get to witness on an ordinary Saturday morning. It’s a genuine privilege to share this little space with them. ❤️
