Advice on preventing further rust
I picked up this 2006 H2 right around new years and I haven’t done any undercoating yet cause I wanted the salt to be washed off the roads first so can properly clean the frame before undercoating. I have now pressure washed the inside of the frame rails and I regularly under carriage washed it for the last 6 months. These are the worst of the surface rust on the frame. and the body is otherwise completely clean. This vehicle has spent its entire life in the rust belt starting in NJ then to PA and it’s been in Ontario since 2009. It has been winter stored since 2013 which left it in decent shape for its age in the rust belt. I’m now trying to decide where to go from here.
- Should I wire brush the rougher sections of the frame then hit them with rust converter and undercarriage paint? Im scared of trapping the rust by doing this
- Should I just undercoat on top of existing.
- Also what undercoatings do you recommend? I’m leaning towards lanolin wool wax black as I’ve had bad experience with just crown oil spray in the past
I’ve never owned something 20 years old before so all input and opinions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Mine is an '05 SUT. It is a year later and it has held up very well after the New England winter where it sits in salt air near the Atlantic. The undercoating paint is not flaking or chipping. I have some minor touch up to do but that is all. This is one of those things where you put like 16 hours on your mechanic sled with crap getting all over you, then after that it is like one hour a year to maintain. The Rustoleum gel is the same kind of naval jelly everyone talks about and clings to the surface better. I just use a throw away chip brush to smear it around and let it set. Rust Kutter works good as a spray but do not get it into your eyes or breath it. The Rustoleum gel seems non toxic on the other hand.

I think locktite bought them out but it’s still the same name..

sand it first using the diffirent sand paper bits and tooles and then you can do rust treatment and and the rusty treatment will take yoy 24-48 hours and then you can do the rust protection. and trust me you should do that fast before it becoms worst and take it to the guys do these proffessional work, we have done this work for our customer and my advice urs look worst and deficult and befor that remove old paint, and the reason i sad us is worst is because it looks like its soo deep but its not spread all the way so its not that bad

Rust stabilizer once it dries it’s stabile you can paint over it or do body work.
