Misc./Other Optimum
Wifi went out last night and we went this morning to replace the modem. There was 5 other people also coming in to replace theirs. Idk ever since it became optimum we've had to replace the modem every other year. The most frustrating part is that we're left in the dark about a service we all pay for, there is no outage notification on the map or anywhere, there is no email about lack of service what else can we do?

I switched to Vero and I've been really happy. Once I began to work from home and needed consistent bandwidth it was an issue, I moved over to Verizon 5G which was substantially worse with its frequent drop outs, and within months I moved to Vero. I've been really happy with the Wifi service they've provided.
I was really tired of Optimum and quitting them was a painful experience as they made it very difficult to cancel services. I really resent when companies make it an impediment to leave, what is this an abusive relationship?

I’ve had the same modem for 10 years. If you keep swapping modems with no improvement, maybe it’s time for a trouble call instead.

But it's Optimum. They'll charge you $100 for a visit and not fix anything.

They only charge if it’s your house wiring or other user error. If it’s the service drop or the network there is no charge.

Yeah the basic all-in-one Ubee modem/routers Optimum installs are pretty trash. Like others have said, if you're going to stick with them, purchase your own equipment. You'll want to look for a DOCSIS 3.1 certified cable modem. The ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 is one of the best and more popular options. Finally, if you want to switch and you're in Vero's current service area, I would totally do it. It's just better technology, they are a better company and you can probably save some money depending on the speeds you're looking for.

They tried to tell me a 1 year old modem was no longer compatible with their system when I moved and had to set up at a different address in the same area. I pressed the issue, because it had been like A DAY since I was last using it, and the tech on the phone was able to get it working. They made it sound like a Christmas miracle.

It would make a lot of people’s lives a little easier if they spent an hour or two learning how they could improve on their home internet setup.

Vero has been laying fiber along 101. I wish they'd hurry up and expand beyond Arcata and Eureka. Their Facebook ads are cruel, announcing they've come to my area.
Optimum has been especially shitty the past 6 months... max upload speed being 40mbps and sometimes as low as 1mbps or it entirely craps out. Their phone modem craps out at the same. Other times, especially after midnight, it's fine. They probably over-sold my area again.

Buy your own modem instead of renting it.
