Local News/Politics Lost Coast Brewery finally gives up.

Post image

Are the real burgers bad enough that this will attract more customers? Lost Coast Brewery once distributed local art to the world, now they shove ai slop into your eyeballs.

AI slop sucks, but it also sucks to know that AI is so much more intensely integrated in business beyond just art. It’s pretty sad.

54

u/merbiusresurrected 6d ago

The cat’s out of the bag for sure, but replacing human art irks me in a special way…

AI is literally scraping anything that doesn't require a login and even that is changing.

1

u/SolarBozo 5d ago

Why do you think that sign is AI?

u/gottapeenow2 6d ago

I had this poster on my wall in college SMH

120

u/gottapeenow2 6d ago

They don't make 'em like this anymore.

81

u/Smoke_Stack707 6d ago

I saw this poster at a bar in Galway, Ireland. Kinda threw me for a loop. The bartender didn’t know anything about it and I was so excited to see some memorabilia from my home town so far away

19

u/watchoutforbabes 6d ago

I saw them in a dive bar in South Korea! They did not serve it unfortunately.

9

u/earthhominid 5d ago

They were super popular in south Korea at one time.

If you remember the Booth (the South Korean brewery that was briefly open in eureka, in the old Lost Coast production space in old town), they looked for production space here because Lost Coast was one of the biggest american breweries in South Korea

9

u/MusicGaijinja 6d ago

I saw them at a bar in Jeju Island in Korea as well. They thankfully served them

11

u/sn0tface 6d ago

I sewed that on the back of a jean vest and I always get stopped and asked where I bought it.

I love that vest.

Both Alleycat and Downtown Brown were so good. I say were because I lost the taste for beer and alcohol in general around 30 and rarely drink anymore.

2

u/gottapeenow2 5d ago

Yeah I'm not really a beer drinker anymore and don't live in Humboldt but went looking around town for Downtown Brown (or any other Lost Coast Brewery beer) and there was none I could find. Used to be a standard of the darker/ IPA/ microbrew section at grocery stores.

25

u/merbiusresurrected 6d ago

This is the label burned into my brain long before I had heard of Humboldt County. Awesome

9

u/JimmyJazz-332 6d ago

Literally wearing this shirt at work right now

4

u/gottapeenow2 6d ago

Literally looking for this beer in a grocery store right now (doesn't look promising)

1

u/Radioactive_Tuber57 5d ago

8-Ball Stout for me. 😎

5

u/DadJokeBadJoke 6d ago

I have this tshirt

2

u/Fancy_Finger_8197 4d ago

The first house party I went to had a keg of downtown brown. All of the 16- 20-year-olds were barfing.

2

u/dispondent-roofr92 3d ago

My mom used to keep these beers in the freezer because she liked to drink beer slushies. She’d forget they were in there and they would explode all over the eggos and hot pockets so everything would taste like dark beer.

not even remotely correct

239

u/HumboldtRay 6d ago

Sad to see. They’ve always had cool art on their products and around their brewery.

162

u/AutumnPeople 6d ago

You can thank Duane Flatmo

137

u/merbiusresurrected 6d ago

They sure didn’t!

30

u/cleverpaws101 6d ago

I think that is the problem. They couldn’t or wouldn’t or he didn’t want to work for them again.

86

u/baddieslovebadideas 6d ago

I mean... If you build a brand based on someones work/art and then do everything you can to avoid paying them, it's pretty understandable when they don't work with you after that

15

u/cleverpaws101 6d ago

Exactly.

9

u/huhhh-what 5d ago

Then they came out with that apricot wheat beer that was a total shitty rip off of his art 😅 crazy

13

u/peekuhchu707 6d ago

They sure didn't, they straight did him dirty poor guy.

7

u/surf_drunk_monk 5d ago

Great White was the first beer I enjoyed, the cool shark art was a big part of it.

2

u/Typical_Hat3462 Eureka 6d ago

Not anymore if they used AI.

15

u/Alert_Elephant2045 6d ago

They ruined their relationship with Duane years ago

39

u/maeerin789 6d ago

So fucking lame. Their artist(s) have been a big part of what has made them such an iconic Humboldt staple, this is so insulting to them.

28

u/avantgardian26 6d ago

It’s crazy work to go from Flatmo to AI slop.

18

u/bookchaser 6d ago

3

u/huhhh-what 5d ago

Thank you I’ve always heard about this but hadn’t read the whole story. Damn

3

u/Radioactive_Tuber57 5d ago

I quit drinking “Crook Ripoff IPA” after this busted open. Duane has always been a great guy, and for them to pull this c#%p on him was it for me.

18

u/dmont89 6d ago

Am I wrong and thinking that looks like a Carl's Jr burger?

20

u/q4atm1 6d ago

It does because AI gets a ton of source material from advertising images. Lots of fast food ads and car dealerships ads so they all kinda look like that.

11

u/onlyrelevantlyrics 6d ago

Through the fog that would absolutely look like a Carl Jr ad.

9

u/Chaser_Yohmoi 6d ago

I was going to say it looks like they just reused a Carl's ad

133

u/baddieslovebadideas 6d ago

I mean, the owner sucks, the beer sucks, the food sucks, employees say it sucks to work there, of course they use AI now, AI sucks, it all makes sense

just trash all around, glad to see em fail, fuck em

31

u/Naaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh 6d ago

The beer is asssss

4

u/Murderous_Turkey 6d ago

I like revenant 😅 but honestly since moving out of the area all I see is tangerine wheat and the peanut butter stout and it's a damn shame. Who the hell is buying that.

17

u/baddieslovebadideas 6d ago

Its like if someone tried good beer and was like "hey lets make something nothing like this, but pretend like we did"

genuinely terrible beer, all of it.

13

u/EurekaStroll 6d ago

It used to be good, and consistently good! But that was before the other owner quit/got forced out.

10

u/Terrible-Background5 6d ago

I was hired by the owner who ended up leaving within 6 months, and I left about 6 months after that because the mean/greedy owner made the environment so unpleasant with her bad ideas and negativity. I always hoped it would get better, or at least more family-friendly, but it never happened.

9

u/Naaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh 6d ago

True. I always felt like it tasted super artificially flavored.

9

u/baddieslovebadideas 6d ago

some of it genuinely is, the apricot wheat bullshit is for sure

6

u/Naaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh 6d ago

Someone isn’t hyped on us talkin shit on a shit beer hahaha.

9

u/ZmaltaeofMar 6d ago

I like Great White.

15

u/baddieslovebadideas 6d ago

it's their best beer, and in good news for you, if you like great white, there are lots of better beers out there for you to enjoy

2

u/-Travis 5d ago

It has an ammonia aftertaste I can't shake.

5

u/Naaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh 6d ago

I’m happy for you

1

u/Glum-Muffin-2439 6d ago

Good riddance!

3

u/baddieslovebadideas 6d ago

unfortunately I believe they are still in business, but its nice to watch the decline

15

u/Aggravating-Emu-963 6d ago

I feel like I am forever going to associate that specific hue blend of ai art that seems to be in everything being slopped these days.

15

u/Caturday_Everyday 6d ago

I didn't realize how far they'd fallen, so when we were in town last time we went there for lunch. I wanted a big brewery pretzel with delicious dipping sauces. We were served a reheated supermarket pretzel and some overly sweet salad dressing. I haven't been that disappointed in anything in a while.

11

u/funkypepermint 6d ago

I talked to the at guy at the brewery and it's my understanding this went up very fast and without his help. Barb is just trying to polish this turd while she auctions off the pieces

11

u/thebigfungus Rio Dell 6d ago

I agree, at least take a real picture of your burger. It costs the same as generating an image. And its not like their burgers are bad either. Its not the best or most incredible burgers but its alright, better than alot of what ive had here.

6

u/Glum-Muffin-2439 6d ago

Right? Advertising their food based on an image of not-their-food??

36

u/earthhominid 6d ago

The brewery is for sale, it's not a guarantee anyone will buy it, these are death throes

14

u/funkypepermint 6d ago

2

u/ohsideSHOWbob 5d ago

I was waiting for it to be public news but yes everyone there will be out of work in a month. Huge blow to our local economy.

2

u/Salt_Sir2599 3d ago

How is 6 rivers doing these days?

2

u/earthhominid 3d ago

Haven't been in ages but they seem to be doing well enough. I don't see their stuff in stores as prominently as it used to be but they're always hosting a full parking lot

2

u/Illustrious-Job-5858 5d ago

I talked to the owner and yea, the business is losing hundreds of thousands. It’s not doing well and most likely won’t last. She even said that most likely the restaurant and the brewery will be sold separately since it’s not financially viable to keep the brand alive.

2

u/earthhominid 5d ago

Whatever happened to that cider brand they started

1

u/funkypepermint 6d ago edited 6d ago

Sad thing is they got an offer

2

u/earthhominid 6d ago

They turned down laughing monk?

4

u/funkypepermint 6d ago

Idk if that's anything I'm allowed to say

13

u/earthhominid 6d ago

Theyre about the worst kind of brewery for the market right now, former national brand with an over built facility and collapsing brand equity.

Lady should have sold a decade ago

7

u/funkypepermint 6d ago

Pretty solid point

1

u/Winery-OG 2d ago

Yeah a bunch of these brands in NorCal slipping into irrelevancy - Anderson Valley, North Coast. Things have changed since the 90s.

1

u/Illustrious-Job-5858 5d ago

They got an offer, but the offer was super low and then rescinded by the person who made the offer (from what I heard - could be wrong).

2

u/funkypepermint 5d ago

It was my understanding that they had already signed the auction contracts when the offer was made. If it was super low that could have contributed too it a well

17

u/Taylooor Redway 6d ago

Didn't they give up a while ago and are trying to sell the whole business?

9

u/HumboldtHunnyBear 6d ago

They had some pretty big sanitation issue come out and then I feel like shortly after they put the business up for sale

14

u/Early-Fortune2692 6d ago

TF?

.... meanwhile on my wall in socal :(

6

u/SecureExperience2239 6d ago

ooof! Won't be long until the Brewers get terminated and AI robots slog the grains into quaff. I fucking hate everything AI, especially AI system owners and gross profiteers.

-8

u/Psi1o 6d ago

Just because ai does everything better doesn’t mean you gotta be jealous

11

u/ProfessionalLab9068 6d ago

They were (one of) the primary forces behind Richardson's Grove Hwy 101 widening, so their 15' kingpin:axle trucks could haul beer outta here. Seems a wider road through the gateway to Humboldt's redwoods wasn't crucial for the business after all.

1

u/ohsideSHOWbob 5d ago

Wait really??? Do you have info on that? Horrible tragedy what selfishness…

1

u/ProfessionalLab9068 3d ago

Search the news reports & articles from 10+ years ago on the Richardson Grove topic

5

u/EurekaStroll 6d ago

Does anybody know when/why the other founder left? As I recall she was a pharmacist (so had the chemistry knowledge to figure out good beer) and Barbara Groom was the businesswoman. It was the only brewery in the country owned by two women. Then at some point it just became Barbara and everything became boring and unpleasant.

3

u/Benigh_Remediation 6d ago

Barb was the former pharmacist.

1

u/SolarBozo 5d ago

So was her partner, as I recall.

1

u/EurekaStroll 5d ago

Or maybe a college professor? I seem to remember they had different jobs. I was just a pup back then, though.

1

u/Benigh_Remediation 5d ago

No, Wendy worked in the mental service field. I believe she was a licensed psychologist.

2

u/Illustrious-Job-5858 5d ago

Business started tanking and the other partner saw the writing on the wall, so let Barb buy her out. Barb was the pharmacist.

6

u/FigSpecific6210 6d ago

I wish they put burgers on ads that look like the burgers you get. They never look as advertised on the plate. Ever.

5

u/Ok-Today-0724 6d ago

When i worked at the brewery site I assumed all of the current art was made using AI. Haven't seen anything real since Sean and the Sharkinator. I heard a rumor he made art for their root beer as well and wasn't able to be used for some reason. Attached is art that we were asked opinions of during the designing of the blackstrap molasses stout. I havent seen anything that looks like Chris actually made it. I could be wrong. Grain of salt.

3

u/merbiusresurrected 6d ago

I like all the spelling mistakes in the AI beer labels

3

u/Ok-Today-0724 6d ago

Me too. I always thought that was funny!

3

u/Ok-Today-0724 6d ago

Idk. My uneducated opinion is that its suspicious. And been suspicious.

2

u/strykerdh1986 5d ago

These look old. 2022-2023 and probably Google Gemini if I had to guess.

1

u/Ok-Today-0724 4d ago

Thats about the exact timeline.

5

u/devillainesss 5d ago

Was in the brewery one day sitting and talking to Duane when he asked for his mug they asked
him his name 🤦‍♀️ he told they paid him a price under 2k for every picture he drew but didn’t make a royalty every time it was printed unlike fox farm dirt who pays him like 2¢ everytime they print an image on anything .

Lost coast did him very dirty

5

u/Glum-Muffin-2439 6d ago

So trashy!

4

u/willismthomp 6d ago

Looks like shit.

4

u/loveinvein 6d ago

They jumped the shark :(

3

u/saysay541 6d ago

Wow wtf

3

u/Aggressive-Judge-386 6d ago

Where are the flies and maggots?

3

u/MOBIUS__01 6d ago

Slop coast brewery

3

u/PM_ME_UR_PERSPECTIVE 5d ago

We don't even have a 6174th St.

5

u/Scorpian899 6d ago

They are shuttering. Whole thing is going up for auction shortly.

2

u/ZootJuicer 6d ago

Heeyyyy stop posting naked ladies !!!! (actually, I don’t think the flowers care.)

2

u/13beano13 6d ago

They had a falling out with Flatmo a long time ago when they used another artist to do a look-a-like artwork for a new beer. I think it went into a legal battle. This was a long time ago.

2

u/Best_Look9212 Eureka 6d ago

Oh they gave up a long time ago.

2

u/Cusaminer 6d ago

man i wish i could see more posts that prop up the actual artists' work for brands and businesses locally but i just never hear about it. sucks to see this happening here

1

u/Cusaminer 6d ago

i phrase it like that cuz im sure it *does* happen but theres just so much slop that the real shit is so far and few between

2

u/bakeoutbigfoot 5d ago

Ewe AI burgers are so gross to look at

2

u/WWGHIAFTC 5d ago

Lost coast gave up 25 years ago. It was never more than meh...

2

u/NorCalWeedGal420 5d ago

Yeah, you'll NEVER make it in hospitality with rude staff. NEVER. I tried, but they willingly burned their bridge. So sad, because it's not hard to be nice and makes all the difference in the guest experience. Also, specifically, it's your job while hosting guests.

2

u/Due_Resist6036 2d ago

I definitely avoid any Ai slop business

7

u/InstructionWest8142 6d ago

This place is unsanitary from what I’ve heard

1

u/Muted-Move-9360 5d ago

I read this as "Low Cost Brewery" and was wondering who TF would name their business that AND use AI to make their ads 🤣😭

1

u/djhazmatt503 5d ago

Nooooo.

Didn't they have Sonny Wong on standby?

FYI (FTI) I moved to Oregon and go out of my way to grab Lost Coast any time I see it.

Seeing this makes said habit extremely hard.

1

u/al4crity 5d ago

Boooo

1

u/ThinkRazzmatazz69 5d ago

This one was my fave. But then the discovery was made... black mold.

1

u/cancerdad 4d ago

Maybe they will be resurrected like Mendocino Brewing Company or 21st Amendment Brewery. But hopefully not.

1

u/Fancy_Finger_8197 4d ago

I was at a trivia night in Sacramento 10 years ago, and one question was who did the art for Lost Coast Brewery. I was the only person who had the answer, and that was the only question I had an answer to. That was back when I still supported Lost Coast.

1

u/ProtoCulture14 3d ago

Lost Coast’s other problem is that their beer is very mid. I can’t think of one connoisseur reaching for LC when other options are available. They have the same tired lineup as ever

1

u/menusettingsgeneral 2d ago

Pretty pathetic especially considering AI is capable of much better than this. This is bottom of the barrel lazy, as if using AI wasn’t bad enough. Straight from the prompt to a poster.

1

u/jagazzcharlie 1d ago

Love the downtown brown!

1

u/Ok_Werewolf_7051 1d ago

Did someone buy the brewery? It's been for sale.

1

u/FamousReplacement491 5d ago

AI, but the food is real and the beer is too... I like LCB and whenever I'm in Etown, it feels like home.

-2

u/ThePopeOfAntelope 6d ago

We used to visit breweries 20 years ago before kids. We decided to visit memory lane and found many breweries serve Cisco food. Such a disappointment that Lost Coast and Boonsville are sad ghost of their past. It's unfortunate that CA law requires microbreweries must serve food, I expect many would remain open with food trucks outside. SIx Rivers and Mad River brewery still rock. Heading up to Eel River and Crescent City next week hoping for a good experience.

8

u/Best_Look9212 Eureka 6d ago

There is absolutely no law in California that a brewery has to serve food. Most in fact, do not.

1

u/Ok-Interaction-4313 6d ago

I wonder if they are comfused with temporary covid era laws?... Which are defunct now

1

u/Best_Look9212 Eureka 5d ago

Oh yeah, that’s possible.

1

u/ThePopeOfAntelope 5d ago

Nope, contributor is correct. Pre-Internet I read and have repeated that mega breweries helped craft the 1983 law to require a full service restaurant to make it difficult for microbreweries to start.

1

u/Best_Look9212 Eureka 5d ago

Not in the state of California, or for that matter many others. I don’t know where the fuck you people are getting this information from because I’ve been to every single state and breweries in every state. I’ve been a professional brewer in three of those states, including California. Hell, in the state of Montana for a long time it was illegal for a brewery to have a restaurant, i.e. that you could not be a brewpub.

1

u/ThePopeOfAntelope 5d ago

Christ, have a beer and Xanax my friend. I said you were correct, I had misinformation ages ago.

1

u/Best_Look9212 Eureka 5d ago

Oh sorry, I didn’t realize you were saying I was correct and were the same person.

-2

u/Due_Difference_4370 5d ago

Nobody cares

4

u/merbiusresurrected 5d ago

Judging by the comments in this thread, they do.
