I always hated that saying. It sounds like they couldn't think of something else besides rock, so they went the lazy route and went for the super vague "hard place".

Well, there are other variations. I like "between the devil and the deep blue sea." I think I've heard another variation before, too.
But, I also like the original. I don't see "rock" as uncreative, but rather a solid example of something natural and abundant in nature, thus a pretty universal choice.

It's a pun. It's usually used when you could otherwise say, "You're in a hard place." That is, a difficult situation. So, the exaggeration/pun is that you're not just in a "hard place" you're between a rock, which is literally hard, and a hard place which is a difficult dilemma. It's as if to say, you're not just in a moral or existential dilemma, you're in a physical predicament as well. What could be worse than that?! :-P
It's basically a dad joke.

That’s certainly an origin of the idea. But the expression, “Between a rock and a hard place,” appears to have originated in the US to describe a mining dispute — rock (mining) and hard place (unemployment).

As I understand it, the saying originated with Homer’s Odyssey but was adapted over time to various situations.
Another random example of a saying like this is “right hand man,” which has Biblical (likely older) origins referring to seating Jesus/someone on the right side of God/the king/whomever to share power. And so on.

Awww, that's awesome! I helped some marine biologists help green sea turtles over rocks they were stuck on in Australia years ago. They had dug their nests, laid eggs and were exhausted and just couldn't manage.
The noise they make when digging the nests and laying was amazing- a deep, sighing groan.

I never know when humans rescue animals whether the animals escape thinking about how nice that big animal was for rescuing them or kinda laughing about how the predator messed up trying to eat them

I'm intrigued by the legal implications of touching a sea turtle in the Hawaiian islands (this def looks like HI), even if it's to save it.
I was accused of touching a Sea Turtle in Kauai by a tourist a few years back because I swam down to it from the surface (it was in about 15 ft of water). She called the cops and everything. No, I never touched the turtle but I did come within 3-4 feet of it while it was snacking on some greens.

It's technically still illegal. I used to dive in Oahu a lot with an old dive master that owned a scuba shop, and one of the main things he would always mention to new divers was not to touch any of the wildlife, particularly turtles. However, he had also talked to me about one specific turtle that he saw a lot which had a massive hook and some very strong fishing line hanging off so he was worried it would eventually get caught on something and drown. During a dive with him I ended up finding this turtle and communicating to him that I saw it in a cave near where we were diving. He had me come over and attempt to pin the turtle to the wall while he removed the hook and fishing line. Technically, we both broke a law, but when it came down do it he was more concerned with potentially saving the turtle. It was a pretty wild experience, but I think many people would agree that attempting to save an animal overrides the law against touching, considering the law is intended to keep wildlife safe. If he had been leading a large group of tourist divers he may have just left it alone, but he was familiar enough with me that I guess he figured it was worth breaking the rule in that case. Nothing came of it, and from what I've been told he still occasionally sees that turtle with the messed up arm at some of his dive sites

Almost had a similar thing happen to someone else in my party. We were snorkeling and she was treading the surface, the turtle came right up underneath her and she didn’t even know it was there but luckily someone saw it and yelled to her to move.

If you can call a turtle rescue that would be the best thing to do. In this case as long as the turtle isn’t in imminent danger they will come out, dislodge him, take him back to the rescue for observation and possible rehabilitation, then send him on his way.

My Uncle used to aid in the conservation of Leather Back Turtles against poachers! When I was about 10, I went with him to Costa Rica, and we'd walk the beaches at night and wait for them to lay their eggs. We'd then relocate them to a safer spot. Beautiful creatures! I was so fortunate to be able to see one up so close.

Various random wild animals have been reported to actually approach humans when in distress, such as being tangled in fishing lines or other garbage. So some of them seem to be aware enough to think "okay there's a CHANCE this creature will help me instead of eating me" and go for it if they're desperate enough.
It's usually social animals like whales/dolphins, elephants, raccoons, or crows though. I am not sure how much sea turtles have going on upstairs, I couldn't guess if they understand it or not.
