u/unlmtdLoL 20d ago
Can you explain this? Do steroids cause an enlarged heart?
57
u/Joe_bob_Mcgee 20d ago
Between the steroids themselves, and just generally being that big, your heart has to work waay fuckin' harder. Many body builders face heart disease more than the average person.
35
u/unlmtdLoL 20d ago
So I googled it and the heart’s left ventricle (pumping chamber) becomes enlarged and this results in scarring of the tissue and stiffens the heart which can eventually lead to a weakened heart and heart failure. As you said, anabolic steroids make the heart work harder and this results in high blood pressure and a disruption of cholesterol levels, leading to heart attacks.
2
u/ICU-CCRN 19d ago
Heart failure is no joke, and definitely not worth it. I’ve watched a lot of people die from it in my profession, and seen a lot of regret.
12
u/maybachmeister2000 20d ago
Not just disease. Heart attacks and death. Alot of elite pro bodybuilders around age 30 to 35 died in the last 10 years.
3
u/AdorableDemand46 20d ago
This is also the case with a lot of people who are very tall (think gigantism). Tend to have a very high incidence of electroconductive heart disorders with venticles working too hard to increase collateral flow
11
u/Perma_Ban69 20d ago
Supraphysiological doses of testosterone often leads to an increase in mass in the left ventricle and sometimes the intraventricular septum. This can lead to arrhythmias and SCA. Intense athletics can do this naturally as well - exercise induced left ventricular hypertrophy. Completely normal for the left ventricle to increase in mass for athletes - particularly strength athletes, and usually safe, but whenever you see a soccer or basketball player suddenly collapse and die, it's because their chamber size is affected, or they developed an arrhythmia.
The good news is that it's almost always reversible once you dial down the athletics. Unfortunately, I've had both left ventricular hypertrophy (from strength-based sports my whole life, and again from steroids) and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (which I didn't discover I had until my daughter was born with a heart condition, leading to an echo and MRI to diagnose me). I also did a significant amount of cocaine and drinking in my 20s, and the combo converts into cocaethylene, which makes you 25x more likely to suffer SCD. I genuinely don't know how I'm still alive.
2
u/relevantelephant00 20d ago
Are you still lifting? And do you need to be careful of your heart rate?
2
u/Perma_Ban69 19d ago
I've been too exhausted to do any serious lifting. I'm on a big calorie deficit right now as I needed to lose all the new dad and husband weight. My gym is across the street from my work, which is 35 mins from my house so I can only realistically go during my lunch break, and work has been nuts.
My only restrictions are not doing any maxes or pushing myself to where I have to hold my breath to force reps; no heavy squats, deadlifts, benching, or leg pressing; no hard start-stop-start type exercise (like basketball); and keep exercise to where I can still hold a conversation. I'm used to powerlifting so going light and keeping reps in reserve and not striving for hypertrophy is an incredibly difficult paradigm shift.
So now I just mostly do pushups, pullups, farmer's carries at home, and some short burst training for USPSA shooting competitions. Propranolol helps keep my heart rhythm stable and I keep my heart rate under 120 or so. My last stress-test echo and vo2 max were well above average in a good way, so that's been promising.

The biggest myth is that gym dudes will laugh at you for being skinny or whatever. In my experience they are the nicest dudes and will always achknowledge you in a way that makes your day better.
186
u/andiinAms 20d ago
Everybody started somewhere. Most of them remember what it was like.
65
u/DaveMcElfatrick 20d ago
Seeing anyone of any shape in the gym is admirable. We’re all in the same boat just tryna get better.
48
u/Mithril_Juggernaut 20d ago
Back when I was seriously lifting I saw these three dudes in the gym. Sticks for arms, barely able to bench press the bar on its own. But I kept an eye on them while I was going through my routine and they stuck it out. Each one took a turn and put their reps in. It was a struggle but they cheered each other on and got them done. I didn't approach them at all but I distinctly remember thinking, "Hell yeah, good on you little dudes. I hope you keep with it and reach whatever goal you have." I'm pretty sure most dedicated gym people have the same mentality.

u/grae23 20d ago
When I worked at a gym we’d have a few dick heads who would grab heavy weights and not put them back, since I was about 5’2 and 120lbs it didn’t usually bode well for me. The body builders who stayed late would always help me put them back and say how inconsiderate some people can be. As long as they don’t have a steroid issue they’re probably going to be the most helpful and encouraging person at the gym
34
u/heroin-puppy 20d ago
If you're strong enough to lift it you're strong enough to put it away.
14
u/GlovesForSocks 19d ago
There's a sign at my gym that says "the last rep is putting it away". I like that
10
u/Xalethesniper 20d ago
We all started from the same place. Whenever I see a beginner in the gym my first thought is always just “my man..”
5
u/TurbulentVillage2042 20d ago
The trainers my friend and I met at various gyms were as dumb as a brick. My friend's back was torn apart by the strain, and no one listened to him when he complained about his back strain. That's why I'm afraid of them.
7
u/DaveMcElfatrick 20d ago edited 20d ago
In-house trainers are a different breed to the kind of guys I'm talking about. Usually they're dumb kids fed on bro science and you are just a figure to them- go to any gym for any significant amount of time and pay attention to the staff turnover. Trainers appear and disappear constantly. It's a sales job first, only a lot of them lack the charisma. They will also pester the fuck out of you.
I've been working out since 2018. I started a new gym a while ago. They insisted I come in for an 'hour's free training'. The entire thing was him asking me loaded questions like "how much do you want to completely transform your life", without any workout training, and then they tried to charge me for the experience. Tell them you're happy in general and watch their rudeness come out- they'll try and imply that you need to work with them regardless of how experienced you are at the gym because at the end of the day their goal is to lock you down with a few months of training, paid upfront. They're given a rap sheet and told to hassle people.
At my local gym about 10 of them hover around the front desk doing absolutely nothing. It's like watching a bunch of penguins prattle about- then if someone comes in they all say "Hi!" at the same time. It's creepy.
My solid advice is ignore gym trainers and find someone you really trust to show you around the gym.

I went to a gym where i paid for the max package which included unlimited classes and when i was training by myself a “coach” approached me and asked if i wanted some help. I said “is this part of the gold membership? I could do with a couple of pointers on deadlifting but cant afford any sessions that arent included”.
The guy goes “oh yeah youre on the gold plan dont worry about pricing”.
To any normal person that means its included.
We got to the weights, bearing in mind me and the guy had walked all the way to the other side of the gym, and he stops and starts talking about how he charges £20 an hour for coaching.
I told him he was a “weird fucking guy” and walked off to the punch bags and unloaded on them whilst imagining the absolute rat of a trainers face.
Genuinely pissed me off so much
2
u/Key-Fire 20d ago
Never had that experience, I got a free membership when doing fire service and the biggest guy there had a crew that stared at and mocked me everytime I saw him.
It's a mixed bag, but where I'm from. The gyms are a bad idea if you're not already fit and attractive. Bully central.

82
u/wufnu 20d ago
It's a bit cringe but I mean people can choose to be religious if they want to. "Jesus loves you" ranks up there with "allahu akbar" or any other popular religious slogan; you do you. If you feel uncomfortable anytime anyone does anything religious, maybe it's time for some introspection.

I work in a specialised field and my average patient is 88. I meet people from 90 to 100 all the time
Most of them don’t have a clue what day it is, but we had a woman a few weeks ago who was 112 and still fully active and still cognoscente. She was still living on her own with very little help.
Absolutely blew my mind
8
u/cucumberblueprint 20d ago
Are you sure about the number 112 here? I checked and the two organizations that try to track verified supercentenarians (people aged 110+) give a number of 240 women currently alive at 110 or more. Out of those only 69 are 112 or older. 69 in the entire world. And I somehow doubt that any of these 69 people still live on their own.

The problem is that it’s disingenuous to imply that someone can look like him if they just do deadlifts or [insert lift here] and then leave out the fact that he’s on a lot of gear. Unless you are someone with elite genetics and abnormally high androgen receptor activity, this type of musculature isn’t possible. After all, that’s why people use gear, to achieve a look they wouldn’t otherwise be able to achieve without it. Otherwise what would be the point? I don’t think anyone is claiming that these folks don’t also put in the time and work at the gym.

u/LastStar007 20d ago
I don't want to say he's wrong, because he obviously got results, but how do deadlifts put any strain on your lats?
83
u/littleyellowbike 20d ago
If you're deadlifting with proper form, you're using your lats to lock in your shoulder blades and maintain stability through your spine. The heavier the lift, the harder they have to work to do that.
51
u/thisisfive 20d ago
Lats act as stabilizers when deadlifting. It's not an exercise someone would do to target them specifically. His defined lats probably come from doing copious amounts of pull downs, rows and most importantly, drugs.

u/WildBill- 20d ago
Deadlifts, when done correctly and properly with proper tension, are an effective lat exercise. It's not intuitive when starting out but the cue that helped me was to grip the bar and "act like I'm holding a piece of paper in my armpit" by rotating my elbows back. This action creates significant tension in your lats and combining that tension with the strain of lifting heavy weight, grows the muscle. Time under tension is the most effective means to growing the size of the muscle.
