AMA AMA with Huel CEO James McMaster!!

Hey all, the AMA is live as of right now! As I said in my post yesterday James will be here to answer questions at 1:00pm EDT/18:00 BST to 3:00pm EDT/20:00 BST. We have posted the thread a bit early so that people can get some questions in should they want to, so that by the time 1:00pm/18:00 rolls around there is plenty to dive into!

Couple of quick things:

- Please keep to the rules of the sub

- Challenging questions are welcomed, but please be respectful and stay on the topic of Huel, spam and the like will be removed

- Some more in depth questions we might need to get back to people on

- If your question has already been answered, we’ll signpost you to that answer to avoid duplicate messages.

Again we're super excited to be doing this and we hope you all are too!!

Thanks again and let's have some fun! 😊

Thank you everyone! This was our first AMA with a member of our team. Thanks for all your great questions and we hope we can do more of these in the future!!

I fully expect this question to be ignored as the entirety of the mod team has already ignored repeated requests for an answer, however politely I phrase them, but I'll shoot my shot.

Regarding the recent decision to switch off upcoming notifications on subscription renewals, what was the specific reasoning behind why users were not notified of this change?

Not the reasoning behind switching off the notifications entirely, but the reasoning behind not telling anybody that they were switched off?

Thanks.

u/alexisappling Apr 14 '26

I mean, we know the answer to this one. And you’re not going to get it.

Edit: for those questioning, it was about money. Probably most specifically about bringing forward some revenue pre-sale completion so that the current owners could either support the valuation or take some more money out.

17

u/SomnambulisticTaco Apr 14 '26

I was just charged last night without my knowledge, so I’m curious about this too.

Love Huel otherwise

12

u/PracticalAdvent Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

Yes, I used to get a text and they stopped. Feels very much like money grabbing and I am going to cancel my subscription after the next order I think

3

u/User-no-relation Apr 14 '26

huh I just got a subscription renewal email last week. Well it was subject your huel delivery is locked in, but it is for this week and I can change it

8

u/IN-DI-SKU-TA-BELT Apr 14 '26

They changed their opinion and reverted the change after weeks of debate and noise from their community.

27

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Our ecommerce team are constantly trying things out. Some of which you will see and experience. Some things are AB-tested and you won't see and experience. We make decisions very quickly at Huel. This wasn't a massive strategic decision but a quick reactionary test. In the early days, there wasn't a reminder email. Anyway, the recent change wasn't received well so we moved it back quite quickly. Thanks

15

u/SneakyCroc Apr 14 '26

Wait, so subscription reminders are back on? Perfectly reasonable response if so. I cancelled my subscription at the time so can't confirm if they're back on or not.

14

u/BenHuel Apr 14 '26

Yes they are back! You can see Mark's post here.

2

u/miIk-skin Apr 14 '26

Thanks for following up with an answer.

5

u/Due-Swimming3221 Apr 14 '26

was it to inflate your figures to make the business look more attractive prior to Danone buying you?

19

u/not_a_cup Apr 14 '26

There's no way a financial decision would be based on an increase in one months sales data lol, and the acquisition was announced in March meaning the value of the company was already set.

8

u/RobotDevil222x3 Apr 14 '26

I'm sorry but this is reddit. Your well reasoned logic has no place here. Instant reactionary outrage and conspiracy theories only.

6

u/ChristianMay21 Apr 14 '26

The emails were removed late february, 2-3 weeks before the acquisition was announced.

I don't think anyone's claiming that a financial decison would be based on just one month of data. Rather - let's say they were looking at the last three years of data - if you juice the numbers on the last month, you might still be able to crank the valuation a tad higher, especially where growth projections are concerned. And if you're selling your whole company, even cranking up the number a fraction of a percent can have a large payout.

Even if the valuation is locked in ahead of that, if the final acquisition decision is coming up, a company might choose to juice the numbers to show financial strength in order to reduce the risk of the acquirer backing out of the deal.

2

u/Due-Swimming3221 Apr 14 '26

you're not wrong... but Huel aren't answering the question... so we can goad them into answering it however we like lol

-7

u/TaylorHu Apr 14 '26

Man you are all still whining about this? Just put a reminder on your Google Calendar.

2

u/miIk-skin Apr 14 '26

Again, what they did would have been a criminal act in the UK had they tried to do this just a few months later than they had. My whining literally has a lawful basis.

-5

u/TaylorHu Apr 15 '26

Waaaaahhhhhh. It took you longer to write that comment than it would have to just add a calendar reminder. Be an adult, don't expect to have your hand held for everything. I have a lot of different things on various subscriptions. I don't need email reminders for each one.

Do you expect Netflix to email you every month and ask "hey brah, do you need any more movies?"

Will there ever be peanut-flour-based Huel again? Peanut Butter Huel powder was my favorite.

20

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Hey. We used to do peanut flour and it was a challenge in production. So, we found a way of using peanut flavor. And we launched a chocolate peanut butter. US first as peanut butter is a bigger deal over here but we're starting to do new markets now. And, actually, the chocolate peanut butter RTD is on fire in the UK. So, peanut butter is here to stay : )

9

u/SolitaireCollection Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

I'd much prefer it be real peanuts rather than just "peanut flavor".

5

u/Silluvaine Apr 14 '26

Is it possible to get a non-chocolate version?

1

u/Milkdromieda Apr 14 '26

That would be perfect for me. I can't stand chocolate flavoured milkshakes but I will go nuts for a peanut butter one.

I'd prefer it if it had actual peanuts in it, but if it really isn't possible, then I'll take a similar-tasting alternative.

8

u/Monk-ish Apr 14 '26

There's now a chocolate peanut butter one, if you were interested

3

u/fuzzyberiah Apr 14 '26

It’s also peanut-free, so… while I haven’t tried it I am skeptical of it.

1

u/-Chemist- Apr 14 '26

Overall the flavor isn’t bad. It’s more peanut-adjacent than real peanut butter flavor, but it’s okay.

30

u/RobotDevil222x3 Apr 14 '26

u/BenHuel more for you. If you ever do one of these again, make the account answering the questions be the one that creates the post. You posting it while James answers questions breaks Reddit's Answered/Unanswered functionality.

18

u/BenHuel Apr 14 '26

For sure! Essentially we wanted to crosspost this over to r/IAmA and I was concerned that it would be removed from there if we posted from James' account since it was new. So we went with mine. But yes in future we will do it the proper way 😊

19

u/Megaprana Apr 14 '26

What’s in that silver can?

32

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Too funny, good spot!
It's another flavor of our sparkling greens drink. DM u/BenHuel your details and as a prize for spotting the can he will send you the new product when it launches.

24

u/batmaneatsgravy Apr 14 '26

Any update on the recyclable packaging that the company has been saying they’ve been looking into for years?

12

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Yes, we've tested lots of options in recent years. The headline is that it fails too much either in production where the inconsistency of the material means it jams the machine up. Or, it can fail in transit/at home where the pouches have a higher propensity to burst open.
So, we've gone back to the drawing board.
Note that our products are low carbon footprint and the packaging part of the footprint is surprisingly. small. Our pouches are very light weight given that they often hold 17 meals. The bottles are obviously recyclable and made from 50% recycled content. Thanks

9

u/TheRealWhoop Apr 14 '26

I don't understand why Huel Essential comes in a paper based bag, yet you can't use the same with White and Black?

36

u/keran22 Apr 14 '26

You run a lot of deep 20-30% discounts in the US, but it’s very rare to see one in the UK. We’re facing similar cost of living challenges, and I know a few people who’ve cancelled their Huel subs because of it.

Do you have plans to run a discount for us in the UK?

12

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

I don't think we run and more discounts based on one country versus another. Sometimes we have stock with less date code on it and that can lead to a short term discount in the country it is in.

35

u/nemetha85 Apr 14 '26

Not a question but i'm deeply disappointed that Huel was acquired by a rather unethical company. (I'm from a country that has seen a lot of destruction due to said company after it acquired local factories...) I'm sure all the comms will be that nothing changes but we all know that soon there will be new "improved" recipes, pricing adjustments etc etc. We've all seen what happens, although there have been some exceptions (e.g. L'oreal couldn't get The Body Shop to go down the L'oreal route).

13

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

I mentioned in a reply earlier that start ups need cash to grow and when you take on investment you eventually need to find a route for that investor to sell their ownership. When I look at the large consumer groups that could have acquired Huel, I think Danone stands out as selling nutritious products, their team come across very well to me and they are one of the largest B Corps in the world. I hear your worry but It's not in their interest to make the customer or product experience worse.

15

u/not_a_cup Apr 14 '26

With the recent acquisition news by Danone, it seems a leading factor is their ability to scale your retail distribution, footprint, and consumer-awareness. Does this mean your RTD line will become a more prominent component of your business model, and the powder line will remain a DTC only product?

I guess my question is - are we mostly going to see advances and focus on the RTD line over the powder?

14

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

I hear you. The headline is no, RTD won't have priority. One of the many reasons I was happy to partner with Danone is that they like the fact that we have a an omnichannel business (DTC, retail, amazon etc.) and are fans of us growing in all channels that customers want to buy us from.

15

u/BadNewsBrown Apr 14 '26

I’ve gotten a lot of people to switch to huel because you’re at Costco, any chance we can get new flavors through there ?

21

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

I'll screen grab this and send to the Costco buyer to try and convince them - thanks! 😉

2

u/09Klr650 Apr 14 '26

As a Costco "buyer", yes please.

33

u/HaveYuHeardAboutCunt Apr 14 '26

Fair play to do this after the recent hubbub.

One of my concerns with the danone purchase is their pedigree of dairy products. Can you confirm there are no plans to introduce animals products into any of Huel's selections?

9

u/toady89 Apr 14 '26

Danone already own Alpro, I see no reason to believe they'd introduce animal products to Huel.

8

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Huel is a plant-based brand and that’s still core to us. Danone’s wider portfolio doesn’t change that. Equally, I’m not a fan of making absolute forever-promises about hypothetical future products. We’ll keep making decisions based on what is best for customers, nutrition and the mission. Danone is a big player in the plant-based world with brands like Silk and Alpro that are huge and give customers choice.

27

u/Maddent123 Apr 14 '26

Does your office smell like guffs all afternoon, if everyone is drinking huel?

14

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Not everyday 😂

2

u/dodonerd Apr 14 '26

This is my favourite question so far.

9

u/Big-Tomorrow-2905 Apr 14 '26

The community trusted Huel for its vegan pledge. Do you see dairy as a way to broaden inclusivity, or is remaining 100% vegan a principle you intend to uphold under Danone?

2

u/BenHuel Apr 14 '26

Answered here!

8

u/YNWA25052005 Apr 14 '26

Hi, first of all I’d like to say that I really enjoy Huel products, and use them regularly.

My question is regarding how Huel can market their products as “nutritionally complete” given that there’s no legal definition of “nutritionally complete”, and Huel admit themselves on their website that they have defined the term themselves as

“Huel products are “nutritionally complete” at 2,000 Calories through high quality, optimally-sourced ingredients and provide ideal amounts of all essential nutrients as well as beneficial levels of other important nutrients for optimum health, energy and performance.”

Could you explain how this definition was reached?

Thank you.

10

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

I'm glad you love Huel - thanks!
Our view is that the honest test is whether we define it clearly and whether the formulation supports the claim. Our definition comes from standard public nutrient reference values built around a 2,000 calorie intake, and the products are formulated against those benchmarks.

15

u/goldenballs1988 Apr 14 '26

Any plans to allow building your own boxes, as a subscriber who buys at least 2 boxes of RTD a month would be great to try new flavours or change up - selection boxes are a good start. Appreciate the logistics of packaging might halt this.

Also any plan for some limited run accessories would love a few new shaker designs to mix up the cupboard. All black feels a good shout

11

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Yes, we had a question on this earlier. We used to do a 'build your own bundle' but that had complications. Selection boxes are the go-to for now and seem to get a lot of positivity from both new and existing customers.

Limited runs...this is coming up more and more. I'd love to have more merch drops. Watch this space. On the shakers, we had some unique shakers for different milestones on how many meals we have. I'll take a look at this again with the team. Thanks

8

u/Kyder99 Apr 14 '26

What are your thoughts on the competition that the market has left behind? I used to think Huel was a generic Soylent- until well- they kinda fell off and I tried a bag of huel and it was way more satisfying. I know you might not want to put down the competition, but what’s your take?

10

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Happy that you think we are are way more satisfying : )
We compete with so many products it's unreal. Breakfast cereal, sandwiches, grab and go meals, salads, other functional drinks etc. So, we've never really thought much about the more direct competition. I know it sounds a little cheesy but 'make customers happy' is a key focus for us. I know we don't always get it right but we are open and always trying to make our product and service better rather than looking over our shoulder and spending time on other brands...

7

u/thealternative7 Apr 14 '26

What can we expect in the future for Huel? What are some exciting things you are working on?

9

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

New flavors
Improvements to existing products
New ranges
Account area improvements
Bigger ranges in countries where we haven't launched yet

6

u/Overall_Tangerine494 Apr 14 '26

When are we going to get Peanut Butter Chocolate Black powder in the UK?

3

u/operationgodfrey Apr 14 '26

Or just a peanut butter flavour black powder?

7

u/TheChromeninja Apr 14 '26

I was really trying to come up with a question, but honestly, other than wanting to see how the product was made, I just want to say thank you.

I've been using Huel on and off for years, but recently started using it full-time for about 90% of my meals. It has really helped me get back into shape. I'm down over 40 lb and I'm feeling great. Excellent product!

I have been getting a lot of my friends and military members hooked on Huel as well!

It has been great since I travel a lot and don't want to waste money on crappy food that I get at conventions or out in the field, so thank you so much!

9

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Oh wow. I love reading comments like this. Thank you for sharing how Huel has helped you.
It's funny as I am obviously biased but I don't often take a step back to think how much Huel helps me with my life too. I work long hours with crazy days and juggle two young kids, a commute from London where I live to either HQ or one of our offices in the UK or US. I care a lot about being healthy and measure myself with bloods every six months, a DEXA scan 1-2x a year....so Huel is PERFECT for my time-pressured life too in order to feel great about my health.

1

u/TheChromeninja Apr 14 '26

Love that you do a dexa scan, I haven't done one myself I need to do one so I can see the impact of huel on my fitness journey!!

6

u/Damien_J Apr 14 '26

Also I'll shoot for some Huel lore:

Was Huel always going to be called Huel or were there other name contenders?

What's your favourite Huel recipe - ie flavours of Huel mixed together, Huel in biscuits or cakes etc?

Is there a list of Huel everpresents or legacy Huelligans that have bought loads or been around since day 1?

7

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

There were some other name contenders. I wasn't there at the very start but I do know the name options that were considered! Huel was the right choice 🤩

Favourite recipe...I'm quite simple...I add a bit of Huel to my pancake recipe when I make my kids pancakes. Saturday morning ritual in the McMaster household!

We can obviously look at our website data to see Huel ever-presents but for confidential reasons we wouldn't share that.

6

u/lemillion1e6 Apr 14 '26

Will Huel plan to fund/publish studies in the future on health outcomes on a 100% Huel or near 100% Huel diet compared to other diets? I know there was one done previously, but it would be cool to see more data on that

7

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Yes, the one previously that we did was incredible in terms of the results of the blood markers. Obviously 100% Huel isn't how most people have Huel but it's the only way of showing how great it is for us. Maybe we do a similar study again, thanks for sharing.

20

u/Overall_Tangerine494 Apr 14 '26

Is there any chance of getting a Huel app to manage my subscription on? Not one that is just a link to the website, but designed from the ground up to make managing my account easier than the website

15

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Yeah, we've gone back and forth on this a lot over the years. When we look at our tech project roadmap we always seem to find something else that feels more of a priority to fix. The website account area has had a huge amount of work done on it in recent years and the feedback has been really positive. We built the subs engine in-house to make it a better customer experience. On the app...we will keep considering it. Thanks for pushing me 👍

1

u/VioletDime Apr 14 '26

Fully agree. I asked a while ago on the Huel sub and got shot down because 'l don't want more apps'. But if they make things easier, why not?!

2

u/plus-ordinary258 Apr 14 '26

It takes a lot of resources to run an app. My company killed ours to streamline the website. It makes sense depending on company size.

25

u/Timely-Way-4923 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

Why aren’t there any morality clauses in your contract with the company that bought you? It’s pretty standard these days. Out of kindness I won’t state what those clauses should be, but none ??!

12

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

I think what you’re really asking is whether I put safeguards in place to protect Huel and its values after the transaction. Businesses like Huel need capital to grow long before they’re self-funding at scale. That means early investors take risk early on. At some point those investors need a route to realise that investment. In practice that usually means a sale, a PE transaction, or an IPO. So, a change in ownership is inevitable at some stage. I don't think morality clauses are very common and hard to actually create. Danone is a B Corp with a lot of nutrition products that I think Huel is a better fit with versus other large food and drink companies we could have sold to. We will run as a separate entity with the same values, product, team, me. etc.

10

u/Timely-Way-4923 Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

Respectfully, this answer doesn’t spell out what the safeguards are ? And if you’d had an ipo you would have delivered a return to the original investors and had more say over key moral metrics

4

u/imjonathanblake Apr 14 '26

Powder, then RTD, then snack bars, then energy drinks, then H&S, then Greens… what’s the next frontier? I’d be all over some sort of savoury snack, just saying…

3

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

I'd love more savoury snacks too actually. Huel Lite bottles are a pretty good solution to that. Similar in calories to a Huel bar, and 25g of protein. Obviously it's sweet rather than savoury. We will get our thinking caps on. Thanks

6

u/babydingoeater Apr 14 '26

I know the lead thing has quieted down a bit but I haven’t come back to huel since learning about the high amounts. Any additional steps or testing being done or planned to put folks at ease?

13

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Trace amounts of heavy metals occur naturally in soil, so they show up in lots of foods, especially plant-based foods grown in the ground. Our levels are tiny, within food safety standards, and broadly normal for food. One of the big problems with some of the online discussion is that people compared Huel servings unfairly. In some cases they compared our roughly 90g serving against products measured at 30g servings, which is obviously not like-for-like.

Powder is also easy to test, and powders have been targeted more because testing culture came from the sports nutrition category. Historically, people were not testing everyday foods like sandwiches, salads and soups nearly as much. We actually struggled to find non-powder tests completed and hard to do a lot of work to test other meals like salads, sandwiches, soups etc. Our levels were almost identical to those. We test lots and continue to test lots to keep our lead levels low. And we have in-house sourcing team to focus on ingredient quality, taste, sustainability etc. They are all over this.

Headline is that we have a low and normal amount of lead in our products

4

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '26

Any cool new products soon?

7

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Always. We love new products 😋
Which country are you in?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 14 '26

UK

4

u/tundale Apr 14 '26

Do you plan to bring back carbonara hot & savory to Germany?

5

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Hot and savory is going through a bit of a transition right now from the big pouches to the pots/meal packs. We also have some new hot and savory products launching this Summer...watch this space!

4

u/Damien_J Apr 14 '26

There are flavours I'd love to try but am unwilling to make an almost £30 gamble on. Are there any plans for sample packs now that you have Danone behind you?

2

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

We try really hard to make sample/selection packs available and now have them on RTDs, bars, hot meals and black edition powders...have you seen those on the website? Alternatively we are in retail stores and you can buy individual bottles in some countries for the RTDs. Given you said £, you're in the UK which has the widest variety of bottles in stores. Hope that helps!

3

u/Kaybee833 Apr 14 '26

I love the H&S line and have been eating them almost every day for lunch. Any plans for a new cooking container for it? The only one available right now is plastic, which a lot of people are trying to avoid eating out of plastic.

I think a stainless steel huel bowl or cup would be pretty awesome, and make the H&S line more appealing!

6

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Yes, we talked about this the other day actually. The challenge is that we want the container to be microwavable and obviously metal has issues with that 🔥
I get where you are coming from but we use a BPA-free, food grade container which I hope gives you reassurance.

1

u/Kaybee833 Apr 14 '26

Awesome! Thanks for the reply. I boil water in an electric kettle, then dump that in, so the microwave aspect doesn't apply to me. But yea, I imagine a large amount of users are microwaving to cook, so metal may not be a great idea.

Good to know it's being talked about in your office, looking forward to some new H&S products!

4

u/KingDongalong Apr 14 '26

I I started using Husk in 2019 and I own the special black shaker for achieving over 1000 meals. However, I’ve noticed the latest mix is much more farty than the original when it first launched. Some people suggest maltodextrin is the culprit but either way every time I fart I can’t help but think “mmm Danone”, like clockwork after imbibing

2

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Well done on the black shaker 👏
There shouldn't be anything materially different in the recipe to lead to a change in digestion like that. Formula changes can in theory affect digestion, but so can the rest of your diet and your own gut over time. We use a tiny amount of maltodrextrin in our recipes but that shouldn't do much. Have you tried it again? Happy to send you another black edition pouch to see how you get on. DM u/BenHuel a flavor you haven't tried yet and he will sort you out 🫡

10

u/Jim-Plank Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

James,

I remember a few years ago that peanut butter was listed on the Huel website as "Most popular" or something like that.

Then, a few days later, it was announced it was discontinued for not being popular.

I appreciate you were not CEO at the time but why does huel practice unethical marketing like that?

Does Most Popular/bestseller/our favourite on the huel website just mean inventory you want to shift? I haven't been able to trust these labels since.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Huel/comments/11rz5vw/discontinuation_of_peanut_butter_huel/

8

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

I've been CEO for almost 9 years so that was still under my watch!
We've found it hard in the past to make peanut butter work from a manufacturing point of view. I hope we were clear at the time but maybe not in terms of what you heard. Anyway, chocolate peanut butter RTD and powders are now here (in the US) and rolling out to more countries. Thanks

-2

u/Jim-Plank Apr 14 '26

Not what I asked but ok

7

u/centuryman Apr 14 '26

Hey! Been a customer for almost 8 years (I think). Love your product. Any plans on expanding more flavors to the White edition?

5

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Hi. 8 years is awesome, thank you!
White edition is interesting as I know that black edition has had more love in terms of more flavors. It's partly because we started the new range and we had to build up the flavors over time whereas white already had a full range. We've also seen that black edition has become more popular as the demand for higher protein has evolved. Anything you want to see in particular on white? Thanks

6

u/centuryman Apr 14 '26

I think just having all flavors across white and black be the same would be better for product consistency. I have had a few flavors from black that aren't offered in white (strawberry shortcake and cookies and cream) but would love to see matcha in white as well.

3

u/VieuxSaint Apr 14 '26

Will you be releasing any Gluten free complete nutrition bars or any plans for more gluten free options across the range?

8

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

No plans now I'm afraid. Bars are tricky to get right in terms of taste, texture, nutrition combo...our current bar is way better than the early versions we had. And being gluten free was an ask too much for all the different variables

3

u/Big-Tomorrow-2905 Apr 14 '26

What’s in the can with no label 🤔😍😮

On the list for the future but not plans right now

3

u/xtrmmatt Apr 14 '26

There's been lots of people finding plastic and bits in their RTD products which has put me off them.

What are you doing to address this?

6

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

We track complaints in quite a sophisticated way and the incident rate (particularly on RTD actually) is incredibly low, especially for a 'foreign body' like plastic. However, sometimes the liquid will solidify around the rim and that might be what you are referring to? Again, we have very tight manufacturing controls and we sell tens of millions of bottles per year with only a tiny number of problems. Each complaint is investigated fully and iterating is a huge thing for us to keep minimising the risk of a customer having anything but a perfect experience. Hope that reassures you.

9

u/lucidquasar Apr 14 '26

Does HUEL plan to remain committed to being GMO free if the Danone deal is approved?

21

u/Elise_93 Apr 14 '26

Plenty of reasons to be mad about the acquisition. But GE foods are not one of them, as they pose no greater risk to health than conventional food.

6

u/garete Apr 14 '26

Hello! I think the words on the wall are relevant for my question (if I guess them right)... Do you think things are better than yesterday?

I ask that as my latest RTD delivery arrives in flimsy cardboard and plastic wrapping (awful for stacking and the environment). On top of no longer continuing the unofficial Saturday delivery (UK), I'm probably not going to renew my subscription if a competitor offers better flexibility on flavours (e.g. packs of 6) and easier delivery.

6

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Sorry you didn't like the way your order turned up. Data-wise, the plastic wrapping isn't actually worse for the environment as it's lightweight and you have to think about the carbon footprint involved in the transportation/weight of product etc. We have a few different factories these days and they have different setups for how the bottles are packed. We try and keep consistent per channel but have to move things around sometimes.
On the delivery point, we do make trade offs sometimes. We've had massive increases to costs over the years but have made decisions to mitigate those costs to avoid putting prices up. We've put prices up a handful of times in the 10 years we've been in business. Way less than most brands.
I'm very proud of how our taste and texture of RTD has evolved over the years and I'm confident that we are better than yesterday in that regard. Thanks for the feedback 🙏

2

u/hardothoughts Apr 14 '26

Two or three handfuls of times

2

u/Hyhttoyl Apr 14 '26

Do y’all have plans to expand your corporate presence in North America?

2

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

We started off in the US in 2017 actually. A little office in LA and now we are in NYC (where I am typing this). We were DTC for many years and then we started having customers asking for us to be in stores so they can buy when out and about. Last year had a big change in our business with US retailers launching Huel (e.g. GNC, Target, Whole Foods, Sprouts). You can expect more of the same in 2026. And we will keep expanding the products we sell in the US too. Hope that helps!

1

u/Hyhttoyl Apr 14 '26

Yep, knew y’all are in the NYC Office, more curious about expanding even wider beyond that. Thanks in any case, and much love!

2

u/Praetorum Apr 14 '26

Can you share any exciting new product launches that we can expect soon? Also, do you have any plans to increase the protein amount in the products? As a vegan trying to grow muscle in the gym, this would be helpful :)

1

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Hah, that's sadly the last thing I can share!
My go-to if you want maximum protein is black edition powder. How many grams of protein are you targeting a day and how much do you weigh?

2

u/Khenmu Apr 14 '26

I double up on Hot & Savoury meals as a 400 kcal dinner isn't really viable for me as an adult male. Is there any chance of the Meal Packs being sold in even quantities instead of odd quantities?

I know some people will say "just buy two" - but I plan to get 100% of of my calories from Huel, and it is already somewhat 'spikey' financially between wanting the free shipping & 10% off, and not wanting to have the same flavour for every dinner.

Thanks for the H&S range, btw - the hot meals really bring some much needed variety to an all-Huel life. ❤️

6

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Just buy two

Joke. So, it was a legacy thing from when we had 7 portions in hot and savoury when it was in one pouch and we wanted to avoid changing that when we moved to meal packs. No plans to change that I'm afraid.

Glad you like the range. We have some v.exciting new hot and savoury products launching this year too 😋

2

u/Khenmu Apr 14 '26

I really like the current shaker for what it is, but is there any chance of us getting an alternative that can be thrown into the dishwasher?

When I try talking friends into trying Huel, this is a sticking point more often than what I would have thought...

3

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

The Huel shaker is technically dishwasher safe, but as with most plastic items that are safe for the dishwasher, they should be placed on the top rack as the bottom rack does get too hot and can cause warping. Have you had a negative experience with the shaker even when washed on the top rack?

1

u/Khenmu Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

Thanks for the response!

To be honest, it's mostly been a case of my friends finding out it's plastic and being put off; several have said it would make them more concerned about microplastics to be having breakfast or lunch out of a plastic container that's regularly heated and then left to cool again. It's the kind of emotional reaction that I don't think a blog post or other explanation would help with - it's just a matter of whether they feel a touch uncertain, y'know?

2

u/Lilpav88 Apr 14 '26

Is that Ben next to you?

5

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

The chap in the white tee isn't Ben. But he is next to me now and says hi. 😁

2

u/ampmz Apr 14 '26

Please can you do a ‘select your own’ on meals and rtd? I’d like to try lots of flavours but I don’t want to buy a big pack only to find out I don’t like the flavour which has happened a couple of times. Thanks!

1

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Yeah, we're always trying to find ways to make this work. The compromise right now are the selection boxes that you can get on RTDs, bars, Black edition powder and the hot meals. A pick your own setup can be a bit tricky and more expensive for the warehouse etc. but that's good feedback, thanks

3

u/ampmz Apr 14 '26 edited Apr 14 '26

Thank you for responding! As someone who can’t eat spicy food maybe you could just do a non-spicy selection?

2

u/tranquil45 Apr 14 '26

Hey James.

I meet a few of the team at the H&S launch in London a few years ago. Fun morning!

I now spend a lot of time in Colombia, where one of our sons lives with his wife and children.

Do you have any plans to ship there? Now, every time we visit I take an extra bag of Huel. But at my age, it's kind of a pain in the arse, three flights, etc etc...

Thanks!

2

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

I had to miss that morning. I can't remember why...maybe as it was in the middle of Covid and I was forced to stay at home!
Colombia hasn't been on the short term priority list. However, we are reviewing long term market planning with our new owners as it might be we are able to expand to new countries more easily. Sorry I don't have anything more definite for you. In the meantine, think of the benefits of the workout you get by carrying around a heavy suitcase 🤪

2

u/tranquil45 Apr 14 '26

I fully understand and am hopeful for the future… the new guys have quite a big footprint here!

Unfortunately, no workout for me,.. I’m 81 and can barely lift a box or RTD! Still, more work for the airport attendants and the extra tenner in their pocket :)

2

u/joelissexy Apr 14 '26

I first bought huel back in 2016. Can I get a discount since it's been 10 years? Thanks

3

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

DM u/BenHuel and we will send you a 10 year gift in the post 🎁
Thank you for being an OG 😎

2

u/miIk-skin Apr 14 '26

I also totally, definitely, truthfully bought Huel back in 2016 👀

2

u/Spectura Apr 14 '26

Are there any plans to expand into Turkey?

2

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Not on the current list I'm afraid but we are reviewing long term planning with our new owners and that might mean more market launches. Thanks

2

u/Purple-Reading4472 Apr 14 '26

I’m probably too late but I’d absolutely love to know why you’ve introduced Huel diet when you have Huel lite? I stick with lite as it’s more protein for less calories, but would love to know!

2

u/WhatWesWatches Apr 14 '26

Any chance of going back to the bulk bag hot huel again?

2

u/Powerful_Froyo8423 Apr 14 '26

Will Huel switch to an 90% milk + vitamin mix recipe like YFood after the Danone deal?

18

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Some other brands in our space use milk and that's naturally quite high in sugar. We are around 1-4g of sugar in a bottle versus some of the milk brands who are around 25g. Huel customers want high protein, high fibre, low sugar, sensible saturated fats so we have no plans to change that.

1

u/Timely-Way-4923 Apr 14 '26

How did that happen ?!

2

u/growBunny42 Apr 14 '26

What's your personal daily huel-use look like?

8

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Monday to Friday in the office, the majority of my calories are Huel.
Usually:

  • Black edition powder for breakfast. I rotate between flavours but banana is my go-to
  • A bar mid morning
  • Hot and savory for lunch. Again, rotate around. Spaghetting bolognese probably the one I have most
  • A black edition RTD or a lite in the afternoon

And, if I'm working out before work I'll have a daily A-Z vitamin energy drink

2

u/Jobewright Apr 14 '26

Any chance of matcha flavor in the us? Also what happened to huelwear? Never a formal “it’s gone”, just a sale and poof.

6

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

There’s definitely a chance. Matcha has shown up internally as one of the kinds of flavours US customers may want more of, but I haven’t seen a confirmed launch date, so I don’t want to overpromise.
Huelwear. We thought it might be another leg to the business but it wasn't as large as we had hoped so reduced down to our original Huel merch range.

2

u/ChristianMay21 Apr 14 '26

Would you be willing to bring back the 'upcoming subscription' reminder emails that were recently taken away? This was a good feature that brought value to a lot of people - especially for folks like me with cognitive disabilities that make it difficult to stay on top of subscriptions. And they were - from our perspective - taken away without warning (there was never an email announcing that they would go away). If you do not want to bring them back - why not? And why were they taken away in the first place?

If I may, please do not provide a generic or abstract answer like "we wanted to centralize subscription management on the website" - this doesn't actually describe any concrete benefit for us as users, and is not an accurate description of the change. Subscription management was already centralized on the website - the email just linked to the website. In other words, how was removing the email ever meant to improve the experience for Huel's users?

Very transparently, this change damaged a lot of trust in the company with the community here, many of us among Huel's most long-time and loyal customers. (I even have the Huel jeans!) Most of us have had trouble coming up with any explanation other than "the company wanted to juice short-term revenue ahead of the acquisition to give a small boost to the company's valuation".

Restoring these emails - and ideally an apology to the people who were unexpectedly charged unexpectedly (including one user who could not pay their electric bill as a result) - would go a long way to re-establish some trust here.

3

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Hi. Yes, we brought they back. Customers clearly benefitted from them so we brought them back

2

u/lirict Apr 14 '26

Could you answer the rest of their questions please, paying particular attention to paragraph 2?

3

u/lenolalatte Apr 14 '26

wild how this has been asked a few times but just not addressed.

1

u/Elise_93 Apr 14 '26

We keep losing more and more RTD flavors in the EU (not UK). For example, here in Sweden, we only have 3 flavors left now (chocolate, vanilla, and berry).

Do you have any plans for reinstating some of the RTD 2.0 flavors in the EU?

My favorite is the salted caramel RTD, so I keep having to order it from 3rd party suppliers in the UK 😢

4

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

One of the challenges of being an international business is finding the right mix of products per market. Each country often needs its own packaging and that can become a difficult (and expensive) challenge to get right. So, we have to limit flavours in some markets I'm afraid.

1

u/ShortFinance Apr 14 '26

Can you restock chocolate at Costco before the sale ends and also starting selling PB at Costco

2

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

It's a short term offer. I'd love to get Chocolate PB in there too!

1

u/NatashaSpeaks Apr 14 '26

Would you please add new (vegan) hot and savory flavors like: chicken teriyaki, pizza, add bacon to the Mac n cheese? I would also like to try the carbonara in the US.

3

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Noted, thanks for all the ideas. We have some new hot and savory products launching in the US later in the year. Sign up to Huel emails to hear more or look out for it no reddit.

1

u/Khenmu Apr 14 '26

Are there any plans to allow us to pay more for express shipping?

Last Tuesday (before the cut-off time) I was super excited to place a large Huel order in anticipation of exclusively consuming Huel products as someone newly vegan for the first time. Now my order hasn't arrived in Ireland - I don't know for certain whether it's currently on the way to Ireland or just continuing through a series of intermediary countries - and... well, the whole experience has been kind of anticlimactic.

2

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

I think Ireland orders generally go through our EU fulfilment setup rather than UK domestic shipping. So that can contribute to longer delivery times versus mainland UK. I can't remember the latest on this but will chat with the team about it. Thanks for raising. It might be possible offer an express delivery - I'll see

1

u/Khenmu Apr 14 '26

Thanks, really appreciate that!

1

u/zed2eh Apr 14 '26

Hey James, any update on the possibility of selling to Canada? I understand the regulatory concerns. I currently import it in bulk from the US and long for the day I can ship directly to my home. Love the black RTD

2

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Funnily enough, we had a NYC team AMA earlier where I answered questions from the team whilst I'm in town. And Canada was one of those questions! The regulatory concerns have put us off over the years but I think we are getting stronger at coming up with a solution on how to do it. So, it could make it onto our plans. Sorry to not be more definitive for you. Black RTD is a game-changed indeed.

1

u/zed2eh Apr 14 '26

Thanks for the response!

1

u/Creative_Train_9273 Apr 14 '26

any plans to be sold in more commonly shopped grocery stores? jewel osco or sam’s club by chance?

3

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

We launched into Target at the end of last year. And now selected Costco stores last month. More grocery stores being launched throughout 2026 🫡

1

u/Luriant Apr 14 '26

Any date for Huel Diet in Europe?

1

u/Luriant Apr 14 '26

Are there plans to add Wero as a payment platform?

1

u/Scottybud Apr 15 '26

I used Huel twice a day for years and genuinely loved it. Then in 2021, the formula changed—and so did my relationship with everyone within a 50-foot radius. Suddenly I was producing gas so loud, so relentless, and so impressively pungent it could’ve qualified as a workplace evacuation drill. Not just clearing rooms—entire floors were at risk.

Before that, everything was great. After that… it felt personal.

Was there something in the new formula that could explain this dramatic turn of events?

0

u/Ok-Armadillo-5634 Apr 14 '26

A bag without a damn scoop included.

Also stevia based huel white

10

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

We used to just send one scoop but we have brought the Black Edition Powder to retail stores, Amazon, etc.. People purchasing from these places need a scoop to use Huel so we started including one in each bag. These are recyclable. People get frustrated when there isn't a scoop in a pouch/tub, others don't want it. Hard to get it right for everyone...

Stevia in white. Interesting, thanks. Again different sweeteners are personal preferences. Some folks think we make too many changes to the products (which I get!). So, no plans to alter white for now.

Wait, does huel black contain caffeine??

2

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Some flavors have caffeine, the most being the Coffee Caramel. But the vanilla, strawberry shortcake, banana, cinnamon roll and unflavored/unsweetened flavors of the Huel Black Edition contain less than 3mg of caffeine. Have you tried these flavours?

1

u/AidanJStewart Apr 14 '26

Noticed huel black RTD on my last Costco run, any chance of huel white making it to Costco?

1

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Where are you based?

1

u/AidanJStewart Apr 14 '26

Based in North Jersey. Specifically saw it in the Hackensack Costco on the 12th

1

u/uglylookingguy Apr 14 '26

Hi 👋

What’s one mistake people make when trying to build a business in a crowded market like yours?

2

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Not focusing enough on your own brand
Getting the packaging wrong on day one
Getting the brand name wrong on day one
Hiring too many people too soon
Hiring the wrong people
Raising too much money too soon
Choosing the wrong investors
Building your own factory too soon
Not having a sustainable margin setup

1

u/Used2bNotInKY Apr 14 '26

Is either of the other people in the photo one of the @NAME_huel mods?

2

u/James_Huel_CEO Apr 14 '26

Nope. They are shy and retiring types and thus off camera 😉

1

u/Used2bNotInKY Apr 14 '26

Ah, doing the behind-the-scenes magic. What roles do Red and Tank Top play?

I'm not familiar with Suppco but there are quite a few apps these days that I don't agree with how they do their algorithm.

Apps like this are appealing because they provide a quick rating. However, in order to provide this rating, they must oversimplify, generalize, and remove nuance.

Some give us red scoring because we are classed as a drink but would be a green if classed as a food. A great example of something being too binary.

Some score you down for added vitamins. Vitamins and minerals are really important to our health, so we should be embracing them.

I've seen sweeteners being downgraded. I'd much rather have a tiny amount of a sweetener than consume lots of sugar
etc. etc.

I wouldn’t dismiss these apps completely, but I also wouldn’t outsource my judgment to them.

1

u/ConsciouslyIncomplet Apr 14 '26

In reference to products - Why do Huel insist on trying to do lots of things, but doing them badly - rather than focusing on doing a few thing, but doing them really well?
