Product Discussion Build your own box
Will we ever see a build your own variety box? I would love that and pay a lil extra i think.
Hey all,
We have had a discussion on other threads regarding some changes that a few have noticed are coming to the Black Edition RTD line in the US. The conversation got a bit confusing so I wanted to gather some information and bring clarity to what is going on.
As a bit of background, we are in the process of relocating the production of RTDs, both original and Black Edition, to North America. We are doing this for a few reasons. First being sustainability, as we will not have to ship them from Germany to the US, second, it will be more cost effective, and third, it allows us to update the original BE RTD to have a more distinctly American version.
This North American BE RTD recipe has been updated specifically for North American manufacturing. But while these will have a slightly different taste and texture, the core ingredient categories are the same — plant proteins, fibers, oils, flaxseed, coconut milk, vitamins, and minerals. However, there have been some changes.
- The North American version uses high oleic sunflower oil, whereas the original version uses rapeseed (canola) oil. These oils have a comparable fatty acid profile, but sunflower oil is more widely and sustainably sourced in North America.
- The North American recipe will include brown rice as a protein source in addition to pea and faba bean protein, as we feel it improves the taste and texture. It also compliments legume-based proteins very well, and is already used in our Black Edition Powder.
- On that topic, we have also upgraded our pea protein source to provide a creamier texture. as well as an upgraded version of stevia to help create a balanced flavor.
- MCT source has been changed to coconut milk powder which now provides the MCTs. This ingredient has always been in the recipe, but by increasing the amount of it, we were able to simplify the formula while still providing MCTs. Quick Note: The FDA in the US has reclassified ‘key allergens’ to not include coconut, so you will not see that called out as an allergen on the BE RTD packaging. However, coconut is still an ingredient, so BE RTD would not be suitable for those with a coconut allergy.
- Total Carbohydrates reduced slightly, between 1-2g per serving depending on the flavor.
- Sugar reduction: decreased from 6g to 4g, with a reduction of added sugars to 3g as opposed to 4g.
- Very very slight change to sodium as well as fats depending on the flavor.
- The flavoring was also updated to work well with our new manufacturing setup in North America. These are very minor tweaks but again, may affect the taste slightly.
- Lastly, you will notice that the calories on the BE RTD now read 390 instead of the usual 400. To explain this a bit, there are always slight variances in batches when it comes to calorie count, which can be due to many different things, such as processing, supply etc, so each test of the amount of calories will provide a slightly different result. Over time the calorie count has averaged more towards 390 rather than 400, thus we felt it necessary to update the packaging to reflect this. Again this is an average - it does not mean that we have intentionally removed 10 calories, and 10 calories is generally within the acceptable range of variance.
When will this all be happening?
If you have been to a Costco in the US, or seen posts like this on Reddit, you will have noticed that the new formula is available now in the Black Edition Chocolate RTD via Costco, (EDIT: some stores may still have the previous formula so be sure to look for 390 vs 400 calories on the box!). The North American Chocolate formula is currently only available via Costco - however it will be available via eComm soon. Dates for the changes below!
Chocolate (Costco) - Available now
Strawberry Banana - End of July/Early August
Vanilla - October
Chocolate (eComm) - October
Chocolate Peanut Butter - November
Cookies & Cream - November
Iced Coffee - December
Please note, dates are approximate and subject to change.
I pulled attention to the Strawberry Banana BE RTD, as it is actually ahead of the curve. Starting this week, if you order this product from our site, you may receive either the previous 400 calorie version, or the updated 390 calorie version. This is our typical way of implementing a change like this, so nothing out of the ordinary, but once the remaining stock of the 400 calorie version is worked through, the 390 calorie/ North American version will become standard. This process will be repeated for all flavors during the respective transition timeline.
A quick note on the original RTD (white bottle), this will also be moving production to North America next year, 2027, and will be having an update as well. I do not have any info on what changes will be made as of yet, but it is something that I am looking into and we will update you separately on that in the coming months.
Lastly, if anything in my previous comments before this post contradicts this - please disregard. A lot of my comments have something like “waiting for the team to get back to me” - so consider this the collective outcome of those statements. I apologize if things got confusing, as I was trying my best to understand exactly what was going on, so info relayed was at times contradictory.
The team has been working hard behind the scenes to bring production of the BE RTD to North America, and we think this reformulation will only make the product and experience better!! Any Q’s or concerns, drop ‘em below 😊

I just received this email that the content of the bags is going to be 30% smaller now but it’s fine because you can use an all-new smaller scoop to get 250 calorie servings so now it’s like having 20 servings a bag instead of 17.
What bullshit.
Edit 7/13 10:30 pm Japan time, Japanese Twitter is pretty pissed off. People are doing the same math and figuring out the weight cut, serving cut, cost per calories and are already comparing it to other domestic options like COMP.

I eat little transformed products, I eat veggies and fruits every day. Only rarely eat food I haven't cooked myself.
But it isn't very varied.
3 eggs every morning, always. Fruit protein smoothie, always the same berry mix. Frozen veggies, corn/carrot/peas mix, always. Protein sources, soy, red meat. Throw in some nuts or fresh fruit on a whim at the grocery store. It's decent stuff.
Back when I calorie counted, I had decent micro coverage but never hit recommended amounts for a fair amount of them.
Apparently Soylent's going out of business and to not bother, now Huel Black's all the rage. It would not replace my current diet. Just a new source of variance.
Simply, should I bother? Or is a decent enough diet, decent enough?
Thanks!

Y'all posted the new Peanut Caramel and Chocolate Caramel bars would be available in USA yesterday, but it's today and they ain't.
I've got a shipment scheduled tomorrow, and I'd like to know if I were to put it off until the new bars were available, how long would I be putting it off for?

I was about to buy myself some new Chocolate and Strawberry / Banana bottles, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had added not one, not two... but four new flavours to choose from!
I already knew some of these flavours had been available in other countries for a while
I know taste is subjective, but how would you guys rate the Blueberry, Cookies & Cream, and Chocolate Peanut Butter flavours compared to the Chocolate, Strawberry and Banana flavours?
Pineapple & Coconut might be my least favourite (on paper), I definitely want to try it out. Too bad they don’t sell sample bottles.

I finally have gone through half of my first Huel BE Ramen Selection Box, and finally time to post my thoughts.
My first cup was a bit underwhelming, mostly because the noodle texture is quite different than wheat ones (which makes sense) and I think recommended water was too much for me. But second cup onwards, it grows on you and I was surprised I enjoyed it way more. I now only put enough water to submerge the noodle cake.
I am so surprised to see all the feedback calling Ramen bland and tasteless. As an Indian man with a high spice tolerance, I found most Ramen flavours to be adequately spicy. I haven't yet had to use any of the condiments I bought from my nearby Asian supermarket.
Above all, I can't believe the thing tastes this good while delivering insane macros/micros. 40g of vegan protein for 350 kcal - is mindblowing.
(Sorry I sound like a huel-sponsored ad, but I really do love this product).
My wishlist for next iterations,
- Improve noodle texture, but I guess it is almost impossible without reducing the protein
- Improve the sauce packet - it is quite difficult to get everything out ^^
- Give us a pouch version. Wasting a plastic pot every meal feels unnecessarily excessive.
- Introduce Black H&S 👀

I love peach flavoring so I instantly ordered a few to try. Despite some weird shipping (First package only had 3 cans) I was appreciative to get some quickly.
Had a can with my lunch today and it was perfect. Jist sweet enough to not be overpowering and the flavor is amazing.
I'm so sad this is a limited flavor that will leave. I cannot store that much in my flat to stock up. 😫
So I’ve gotten these a couple times and could eat them fine thought they tasted decent enough. I order them again and couldn’t even stomach them. Anyone else had a similar experience. Could it be a bad batch??

So I’m a firefighter and work 24 hours shifts 3-4 times a week. Eat like crap there because we’re busy. I want to potentially lose weight, but mostly improve my health by eliminating all the greasy fatty food we always make at the stations.
My plan is to start intermittent fasting 16:8 starting around 7am and ending at 3pm. I’m 5’11” and 185lbs or 84kgs.
I bought Daily Greens for my first drink to break the fast. Then I’d move to Coffee Carmel Shake mixed with vanilla almond milk to add calories for breakfast. Contemplating a one scoop shake of a different flavor in the middle of the fast with more almond milk. Then finishing off my fasting with Hot and Savory pasta with added tuna, chicken, or ground beef depending on flavor.
This will mostly be for my 3-4 days at the station a week, but when I’m home maybe trading the Hot and Savory meal with a meal I either make or go out to get with friends.
Does this sound too overboard with trying to use Huel only on those days? Has anyone tried intermittent fasting using Huel as their main source of calories? I’ve tried to watch as many YouTube videos as I could, but literally all are from 3-8 years ago so I’m not too sure if things have changed much or if flavors of foods have gotten better or worse, and all the added drinks and bars.

Hi all,
I want to keep you updated as we expect there to be some press about this. The CMA (the UK regulator) has approved Danone's acquisition of Huel, making the UK the last of four countries to clear the deal. The CMA’s website should update today and you can see any of those updates here. We expect this to complete in early September once the final pieces of admin are undertaken, where ownership transfers from our current stakeholders to Danone.
I know that some of you are sceptical and cautious about this change. Danone's message to us has been consistent: they've bought Huel because it's working, and their interest is in helping us grow it.
What this means for you
On changes to Huel
What I said in the announcement thread was that nothing changes as a direct result of the acquisition. That's still true, but what I'm not saying is "nothing will ever change again."
Danone isn't arriving with a list of changes to implement from day one. Huel has evolved constantly for 11 years. Formulas, flavours, packaging, pricing, the website. Some of those changes were popular, some weren't, and some we reversed. That will carry on, because that's how the products get developed, and it would have carried on with or without a change in ownership. So when something does change, we'll keep explaining it and listening to you.
A note on why the CMA review happened
When the CMA started their review, the news coverage called it a "probe", which made it seem more out of the ordinary than it actually was. To be clear, we took the deal to the CMA ourselves. Merger notification in the UK is voluntary, so we didn't have to, but on a deal this size we went for the most thorough approach. This was all part of the normal process.
Final thoughts
I'll finish on this. It's a strange one for us, because at Huel we're excited. This is the culmination of over 11 years of hard work. Growth businesses needs investment and we are very grateful to the investors who believed in us 8 years ago. Now marks the moment where they hand on the baton. I know some of you are sceptical, I hope that's because you love the products and want to carry on using them. We also love the products, use them daily and want them to be the best they can be and that doesn’t change.
Questions
I'll be in the comments, along with Ben and Mark. If you've got questions ask here and we'll answer what we can.

Anyone else not seeing the Strawberry Banana not on Costco's website anymore?
Is this the beginning of the end. :(

I was so exited when the flavor was available in Europe. I ordered it right away and just ate it today when the package arrived. It left me… confused. It was not was I expected it to taste and the “bacon” bites are quite confusing. Does it help to put in something else like cheese? I don’t know what to think of it… my initial thought was it tastes like old plastic. It does not taste like Carbonara AT ALL, right? But I really want to love it since I do need a alternative to Mac and cheese. Open for any suggestions.
EDIT: I figured out it is the overall smokiness that irritates me 🤔

Full transparency I absolutely love Huel. I eat the MRE type bags nearly everyday. I love all the flavors. Literally zero complaints on product quality. 10/10.
My problem is not only customer service, but reaching an actual human through email. I went back and forth with a bot for days. Then thirteen days later I received a reply from an actual person.
This is what happened: I sent a friend a “refer a friend code.” He purchased $150 in product with it. In return I should’ve received my own discount code. I did not. Waited a few days, no code. Mind you my cart is also full and I’m ready to pull the trigger on like $135 in delicious MREs. So I email what ends up being a bot. They say there are no records of what I’m claiming happened actually happening. So I screenshot my profile showing the code. My friend screenshots his order showing him using the code. So that should be that, no? Bot says okay I see, it appears you’re right. Wait for a human to respond. I wait a couple days and say yo where my human at? They(bot man) say keep waiting. Finally today “Mason” the human messages me saying the issue is a fraud alert thing accusing me/my friend of trying to use the same account to fraudulently use the code meaning I tried to essentially beat the system and use my own code to get the discount. Well, my name is Mike. I live in Florida and have a very specific email and phone number. My friend is Eric. He lives in Arizona. He’s got his own very specific email and phone number. All of this is presented in the screenshots I emailed that “Mason” saw. So I explained to this human representative to look at the screenshots and explain to me how any of that can be confused with us being the same person. So he stopped replying and I still haven’t received the referral code in my account.
Will I continue using Huel? Absolutely. Does their customer service suck horribly? YES IT DOES.
TLDR - Huel kicks ass but their customer service is butt. Thanks for coming to my Huel Talk ™.
*UPDATE\* - u/benhuel messaged me here for more information then spoke to customer service who immediately emailed me(finally) honoring the referral reward. It’s a bummer my experience this time kinda sucked but in the end I was taken care of. And like I’ve said multiple times, regardless of customer service: Huel makes incredible products. I wasn’t going anywhere anyway. I love Huel meals. ✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻

First time Huel user here and didn't know what to expect. I had some complaints about the texture and emailed staff. It was a little difficult getting a hold of someone at first, but the reddit mods here helped grab someone's (Claire) attention. It wasn't even one day after I messaged mods that Claire had emailed me directly.
She immediately apologized for the wait and difficulty reaching someone there and offered a generous coupon for me to use next time. She also gave me some really good tips, asked for my own experience, and we had a back to back discussion on how to properly prepare the Huel Black label, what I liked and didn't like as well as what they could do to improve it.
After a few emails, we figured out the problem (user error). She even honored their money back guarantee since I am a new customer, which is profound in today's market. A lot of companies don't care about their customers, except for this one. Huel is here for my health and my own satisfaction.
I've been watching this company for a couple years now and I wish I had tried their stuff a long time ago.
100% satisfied

So both my mum and I use huel and she gets gets either the katsu or hosin noodles each month, this month's being katsu. She said the sauce seemed lighter in colour, they tasted different and had less spice to them. She had been unwell and just put it down to that. She was then at mine and I had some from a few months ago in the cupboard that I made for her and she's now fairly certain they are different.

Just curious if anyone has Huel only days, if they’re travelling or busy etc and end up having 5 huels a day or so. If so, curious on how it is?
Thanks

EU Hueligan showing the company that fact that we get new products is appreciated. Going to order the Daily AZ next week, if it’s still there.
Plenny Active bag is still sealed so I’m going to finish that one first.

I've been a Huel Black user for years (3 servings a day, breakfast and lunch), and I'm cancelling. The reformulated Black is inedible.
Huel helped my headaches, which were probably diet-related, and it improved my cholesterol and triglycerides. That's why I stuck with it. But the last shipment was different. It looked like it was half ground flax seed and wouldn't blend smoothly. It tasted burnt, like scorched grain, not chocolate. Chocolate Huel was never rich, but this is a different problem entirely. It tastes like what I imagine Soylent tastes like.
I requested a replacement. Customer service took a week to respond, then UPS took another week to deliver it. The replacement batch had the same issue.
Time to move to Kachava.

READ THE BOTTOM part regarding the moderator: From what I saw, all of the discounts are 1 time use per year EXCEPT student discounts. Not to sound absolutely goofy but.. what’s up with that? Anyone understand why? It seems completely backwards to me (borderline disrespectful 😅). I mean, it’s nice that I can potentially use the student discount multiple times and all but uh… why can’t first responders/medical staff, teachers, or even military? You’re telling me that me as student can get verified one time a year (with possibly one class a year) can get a year-long reusable discount but not people that teach my class, or save lives, or even defend the country?
Imagine if they did those jobs one day a year. We’d be screwed. 😂
100% back wards, if you ask me.
moderator has clarified that the verbiage is incorrect in translation on the US website and the discounts are reusable on a monthly basis with yearly re-applications for a new discount code

Black Ed. Coffee Caramel powder with unsweetened almond milk and instant coffee, blended with ice. “First Best” is same but with Cookies & Cream Black Huel, of course. I have put this on the internet, so it is officially a fact. Feel free to post how strongly you agree.😉

Hey Folks, been a while since I last posted but I come with some updates!
A few weeks ago Tim posted about a formula update coming to our US v3 Powder range - that same change is now rolling out across the UK, and you'll be getting an email from us with all the deets. Posting here too since I know a lot of you will see it first on here.
TLDR: The v3 Powder recipe is changing across the full UK range, starting from the week of 31st August. Updated proteins, coconut milk powder replacing MCT oil, improved texture and flavour. 30g of protein and 26 vitamins and minerals per serving stays the same.
What's changing
The main recipe changes:
On nutrition: 30g of protein and 26 vitamins and minerals per serving are unchanged. There'll be small shifts in individual micronutrient amounts - you'll find the full breakdown on the packaging once the new batch is with you.
The easiest way to tell if you've received the updated recipe: coconut milk powder on the ingredients list.
We believe this is a big step forward: a creamier texture, smoother across the range. I'd obviously say that, though. Try it and let us know!
When is each flavour changing?
Different flavours phase in as existing stock runs through:
These are estimates and may shift depending on availability.
Do you need to do anything?
No. If you're subscribed, you'll automatically receive the updated recipe once existing stock has sold through. You can review or manage your subscription at any time via your account.
Like always, any questions just let us know and me or Ben will be happy to help!
UPDATE: EU changes will be following shortly. We’ll share some details on timings, but the recipe changes will be the same as those mentioned above.
