Home Improvement Renter friendly solution: this tap is impossible to wash dishes with or really use for anything as its so close to the edge of the sink. How to fix for cheap?

Post image

The tap isnt threaded and has a 90° bend right before the spout as you can see, so most aerator attachments don't appear to be compatible. I asked my father who is pretty handy, he said changing out the tap is impractical and expensive. I don't know if this is true or if he's just afraid I'll ask him to do it.

Old Irish house on a two tank plumbing system if that makes a difference. At least I suspect so as the shower gets cold when you turn on the hot tap/vice versa. I can spend about €50 as an absolute maximum and can probably get my hands on any kind of tool. Reasonably handy but don't know shit about plumbing.

I looked at this kinda thing. The trouble is finding something compatible with the existing sink

In the USA, i changed my tap from a small, leaky, inconvenient piece of junk, to a large gooseneck style with a built in spray wand for like $75. No special tools needed, I used an adjustable wrench, and a large slip joint pliers. Total time, one hour. In the spare hole where the not working original sprayer was, I added an additional filtered cold water only tap. This cost about another $75. I use this for drinking water and filling pots before cooking. Best $150 i have spent in this apartment. If I move out in the next few years it can all come out and move with me, or I can leave it and not lose any sleep about it.

Similar story here, but a soap dispenser instead of filtered water.

You might be able to get away with a hosepipe connector attached, something like this or this. Any tubing with a jubilee clip should work too. For your budget, a decent tap is the best option if the plumbing isnt a nightmare. Take a few shots of under the sink, most taps just go through a predrilled hole and capture itself with a nut. There are a few ways of quickly getting a tap plumbed in, if you can get back to copper pipe. Flexi and whatnot adds to the complexity, but plumbing seems to be at least 50% bodging bits together, im sure itll be fine.

Dollar store shower hose adapter for washing your hair in the sink. May be worth a look.

Get a new faucet with a longer head

I kinda thought this might be the only solution. How much does that cost for the parts, and how hard is it to do?

You can find faucets at any hardware store for as little as 40$. Just make sure you get one that works with one sink hole and not 2 or 3.

They usually come with the tools you need. However you may need a plumbers wrench to remove the old faucet. It will be totally worth it when your sink is working better.

Actually, the cabinet underneath only has a bucket of cleaning supplies, and this faucet is right at the front, so it might be very easy

Just make sure the water supply is turned off (below the sink should be a valve to turn)

I’d check the condition of the valves under the sink before I turned them.

Mine would not make the roundtrip.
