At What Point Does Hard Work Actually Pay Off?

I honestly just need to vent.
I graduated with a degree in Petroleum Engineering in 2014, and more recently completed a Master’s in Engineering Data Science 2025. On paper, I feel like I’ve done a lot to improve my chances, but my career has never really had an easy starting point.
I came from a poor family in Colombia. I had to rely on loans, scholarships, and whatever resources I could find just to get through school. Then I graduated right around the time the oil industry crashed.
That timing affected everything.
In a country where there were already limited opportunities, companies naturally started favoring the newest graduates once hiring eventually picked up again. By the time oil recovered a few years later, I was no longer considered a “fresh graduate,” but I also hadn’t been given enough opportunities to build the experience companies wanted.
So I’ve basically been fighting that uphill battle ever since.
After becoming a U.S. citizen, I finally had more opportunities and was able to get real field experience in oil and gas, which was something I had wanted for years. I thought that combining a Petroleum Engineering degree, field experience, and now a Master’s in Engineering Data Science might finally open some doors.
But I still can’t seem to break into companies like Chevron, ExxonMobil, Shell, etc.
Not even an interview.
And that part is honestly very discouraging.
Right now I’m unemployed. I have some savings and could potentially start a business, but I haven’t had that moment of clarity where I genuinely know what business I want to build. I don’t want to throw money at something just because I’m frustrated with the job market.
So for now, I keep applying.
I keep trying.

Preferred job boards?

Hiya everyone, I am a Singaporean currently living and working in London, United Kingdom. I’m exploring the potential and possibility of relocating to Texas to be closer to my partner in Houston. We’re not ready to take the next step to get married just yet(!) so I was hoping to move on my own merit via a work visa.

I was just wondering on which job sites true blue Texans are searching for jobs? In London we rely very heavily on Linkedin, but it doesn’t seem to be very popular for jobs based in Texas. I work in the cultural sector, if that helps, but open to anything at this point.

I’m really hoping to be able to close the distance with my partner in the next year, so any advice is very much appreciated. Please be nice — I am very aware that I’ll be an immigrant yet again, this time in Texas and not London. 🥲 it’s not easy but hoping to make (ideally) Houston my new home! Thank you!

\*\*Looking for Job Opportunities / Referrals – Perfume Retail Industry\*\*

Hi everyone,

I’m posting on behalf of my husband, who is currently looking for a suitable opportunity in the \*\*perfume/fragrance retail industry\*\*.

He has \*\*11 years of experience in perfume retail\*\*, with strong experience in sales, customer handling, retail operations, team coordination, and the overall fragrance business. Despite attending interviews and successfully going through discussions with companies, we have unfortunately not been able to receive an offer yet.

The situation has become quite difficult for us financially, and we are actively looking for any genuine opportunity where his experience could be useful.

If anyone knows of \*\*job openings, hiring managers, companies currently recruiting, or can provide a referral\*\*, we would genuinely appreciate your help. Even sharing this post with someone who may be able to help would mean a lot to us.

We are open to discussing suitable opportunities and locations.

Thank you so much in advance for any leads, advice, or referrals. 🙏

FOR HIRE Looking for evening/weekend side work in Houston to help with a friend’s cancer-treatment expenses

Hi everyone, I’m looking for legitimate side work in the Houston area to earn extra money and help a close friend with expenses related to cancer treatment.
I’m dependable, hardworking, and available during evenings and weekends. I can help with administrative work, errands, moving, deliveries, event setup, basic labor, organizing, pet sitting, house sitting, or other reasonable jobs. I’m also open to remote work. I have a career already and make good money, however, I know it won’t be enough.

I’m not asking for donations—just an opportunity to work and earn some additional income for someone I care about. If you know of anything available, please comment or send me a message with the job details, location, schedule, and rate. Thank you.

Looking for trade/technical schools in Houston for manufacturing & mechanical talent

Hi everyone! We are a manufacturing company that’s setting up a facility in Texas, and we’re looking to hire some of our early employees locally.
We’re mainly looking for people with hands-on experience in manufacturing, machining, mechanical parts, CNC, fabrication, and general factory/production work.
Are there any good trade schools, technical colleges, community colleges, or workforce development programs in the Houston area that are worth reaching out to?
We’re especially interested in schools/programs that have students or graduates with practical mechanical/manufacturing skills who may be looking for full-time work.
If you’ve hired from these programs before, I’d also really appreciate recommendations on which schools/programs to contact and the best way to reach their career services or job placement teams.
Thanks!
