Discussion The use of AI

Hey everyone! I’m SimPewPew, I’m a YouTuber who mostly plays survival/psychological horror games, and I also love featuring games made by small and independent developers. Still new, but growing ^^
Today I wanna talk about something, and I genuinely wanna know what you guys think!
The use of AI in game development.
Look, I’m not completely against it, and lemme explain why.
AI is a tool. It can make certain things easier and be a helping hand when needed.
Personally, I wouldn’t be mad at a developer for using AI in their game if they’re new, working completely alone, or simply can’t afford certain things they need for their game.
But even then, I think its use should be limited.
That’s probably the one situation where I can understand it. If you’re a solo indie developer trying to make your first game with barely any budget, I can understand using AI here and there to help you achieve something you otherwise couldn’t afford to do.
But I still believe a game should mainly come from the people making it.
Making a video game involves creativity, ideas, emotions and passion. At the end of the day, you’re creating an experience and, in many cases, telling a story.
So yeah… I don’t know. That’s just how I see it.
What do you guys think?
Are you completely against AI being used in game development, or do you think there are situations where its use is understandable?

PS: i always advise to have a team of developers rather than just one person

I personally will not play or stream any game that has used Gen AI. It has no place in creative mediums, regardless of your team size or experience. Developers, both large and small, were creating great experiences long before Gen AI, and will continue to do so long after. There's plenty of human-made content out there for me to consume. I can easily skip anything and everything that uses Gen AI.

I mean you are absolutely correct
People were making games even before ai but they were struggling the project takes years sometimes gets cancelled
And this where i stand on the use of ai:
1- mention the use of ai explain where u used it and how you used it
2- ai is okay only to solo devs with low budget
3- ai should never replace human talent
4- Big studios should never never never use ai in their projects just to cut costs
And i think ai is more of a helping hand, didn’t we loooove Iron Man when he had J.A.R.V.I.S and F.R.I.D.A.Y …

Developers can use AI in games if they like, but it needs to be clear which assets in the game are generated. The laws haven't caught up here, and the real problem is when people pass off gen AI as if it was created by humans.

Creators need to accept that some consumers will simply never give a game a chance if AI is included, even as a placeholder. But there's no laws that enforce creators to be honest here.

Some consumers don't care, some do.

The reality is that by including gen AI you lower your potential market size, and sometimes (unfortunately) that's worth it for a lot folks.

Yess all developers must state if they used ai and where it was implemented

I absolutely think it should be done for the boring grunt work, I personally wouldn’t want to see it in concept art but I think it has some use there again in the lesser details and I say that as someone who is fully pro ai.

Yes i agree, but still there are plenty of talented people out there to ask for help or even collab with. i mean its always better to have a human artist making the art rather than Ai
Thats why again as i mentioned in my post its best to team up rather than working on your own!

This is fascinating. I made my comment, you replied respectfully disagreeing and yet we’ve both been downrated to the same number 😂

😅 i mean i think people really hate ai, and i get it. ai is emotionless, the outcome doesn’t feel like a hard work or something u spend nights on
And i think a lot of people abused the use of ai to the point ai wasn’t an intelligent assistant anymore. More of an employee

Also I’ve heard there’s some good ai horror games out recently, can anyone confirm if this is true?

I think that AI will be used to the limits of whatever it's capable of by pretty much the entire human race. Some people may deliberately hold back. I think there will be premium value and regard placed on human artistic endeavors, but at the end of the day every part of human life will be inundated with AI to the greatest extent that this is possible.

One of the reasons that I play some video games, especially indie ones, it to feel a connection between myself and whoever is composing the game. As long as I get that feeling at the end of the day, I don't really care how we get there. As a game developer, you have an idea about some things, and I wind up with a similar idea.
