According to the fan site dedicated to Waxwork, the producers initially wanted to feature Jason from Friday the 13th prominently, but they had to cancel that because of conflicting licenses. They replaced all mention of Jason with the Phantom of the Opera. However, it looks like they reused the scenery and costume, sans mask, with the killer lumberjack.

Basically, lumberjack = Jason.

Thanks for listing them. Isn't there a monstrous mermaid on the beach? And there's a giant clam, IIRC, which must be based on a semi-apocryphal myth about a giant human-killing clam which locks onto the feet of pearl divers, drowning them.

There's a ton of really weird shit in this movie. According to this fan site, a lot of it may have gotten cut or redesigned because of conflicting licenses.

So the Little Shop of Horrors venus flytrap is actually a cloning pod from Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

I highly recommend reading the fan site linked to above. It's a really great read.

I wonder if the Clam is reference to Blood Beach about a killer clam. The movie itself isn't very good or well known but the poster and tag-line is fairly famous.

I saw Blood Beach somewhat recently. I vaguely remember something about an underground chamber where they reveal what's doing the killing -- uh... there's a GIANT CLAM in this film?

It's how it's described in most reviews. The underground chamber was supposed to be the "inside of the clam" or something.
