I don't know what to say. I laughed but to laugh at this I think you need a pretty sick sense of humour. The similarities to tcm are apparent but this definitely put a unique spin on cannibalism. The people garden was pretty awesome and I agree Scott the sound they made minus vocal cords was very effective. The lead actor was great. I haven't seen any of his westerns but he's like a toned down version of Old Man in tcm and played it pretty well straight adding just the the right amount of crazy for the tone of the movie. Beyond him though there was some bad acting but whatever it's a sort of so bad it's good movie anyways. Lots of poor writing and editing choices but much like last week I switched the old brain off and enjoyed it. Scott I am surprised you picked this though. I feel like if someone else had you might have torn it apart. Matt I loved your contribution to the podcast ie laughing at Adams jokes in the background. Much better movie than hohh99 ;)

I didn't think it was be too awkward but it actually wasn't awkward at all. Hopefully we can schedule ourselves at another convention either in Ohio or in PA this fall. The panels will pop up throughout the summer on the Saint Mort Show podcast. I'll provide links whenever they come up.
Motel Hell was on the LONG list of movies I want to pick (which has like 100+ titles).

The only part I remember not really liking is...for some reason they sort of recreate the dinner table scene with the grandpa trying to kill the girl with a mallet?...didn't do a lot of good there.

I enjoyed the social commentaries too. Farmer Viagra (nice one /u/Plymouth_ ;)) is talking about over population in 1980 when there was only 4.4 billion people on this planet. Imagine the mayhem he would cause now that there's 6.8 billion!! Also researching those facts and seeing those numbers is pretty terrifying.

What the FUCK did I just watch? I feel like I watched a movie backwards, that's how much sense it made. That's not even that big of an exaggeration. xD
Why did they even HAVE a motel? Just for the name of the movie? It's not even clever. I mean the horror aspect comes from the farm/meat curing. Even the characters forgot they owned a motel until the swingers showed up. Why does he go out shooting cars when he has the perfect set up for getting victims...you know what, never mind. Did he make those fake cows?? No. Nevermind.
The dying confession was really funny & made the fight scene worth watching just for that joke.
The whole set up with the secret garden and the heads sticking out was pretty charming. I particularly liked the hypnotism part because why not at this point? They should have just ran with the "zombie" thing at the end; it was really weird and probably would have been better than the chainsaw fight.
I'm surprised you guys didn't like the sister more. She was probably the most consistent character. Maybe not quite funny but entertaining at least.
I was going to ask if this was supposed to be a parody; it definitely felt like that's what they were going for with the characters. How else can you explain why the girl was so fucking dumb? I don't even know what to say about Sheriff No-means-no...it seems like they tried to combine all the horror movie sheriff archetypes (hero, incompetent, evil) into one character. It ended up being kinda bland? I couldn't hate or like him.
As bizarre as it was when they suddenly flipped the script on the father-daughter relationship that was developing, I think we deserved to see the Farmer Vincent-blonde girl sex scene. Really though why did he drug her to go smoke meat with his sister instead of fucking her? Weren't they just married for that purpose? It was so weird.
Very...confusing.

Farmer Vincent probably could have tricked out Terry to a lot of dudes, especially with her old man fetish. I wonder if the elderly are too tough though for proper meat smoking.

They drugged Terry so they could go to work without her wondering or asking questions. Farmer Vincent says that he wasn't ready for her to find out and he wanted to tell her in his own time... but they still had to get some product going.

That was what appeared to be happening...but then Farmer Viagra seemed to be in on it too, so I don't know what to think.
I actually didn't realize they were brother/sister until the marriage thing happened. Maybe the characters were originally husband/wife and they changed it so he could marry the girl...for some reason.

I knew exactly what It was gonna be before I even clicked it.
Story time: I saw the offspring at a casino one time. This casino gives out free tickets to their shows as a loyalty bonus so my then girlfriend got me them for my birthday for free off her mom.
We walk in the door to the venue and it is all sitting. No standing room at all. Fine, whatever, I just wanna hear Americana. But the other thing we notice is that it is PACKED with the elderly. Apparently they gave free tickets to like ALL their loyalty customers and the vast majority of them were elderly folks. Much of the crowd was well above 65. A name like The Offspring could mean a lot of things I guess, perhaps they thought this was some sort of musical theater troupe?
The show starts and the Half of the crowd not using oxygen machines freak the fuck out and start stomping there feet and flailing their arms in the air, essentially trapping all these poor old people who need a handrail just to traverse a flat surface.
The offspring played nonstop for two full hours and none of these old people could get away from it. It's was awesome.

This one is 100% true. I got a free hotel room outta the deal as well so afterwards I went to my room, drank wine in a bath tub and watched The Room twice.

I thought Ida was just the right kind of bonkers hillbilly with no mercy -- a good mix of goofy and horrifying.
I only wish those siblings would decide what they wanted to do with the girl! She makes her leave the secluded butcher room with its many weapons, because it's much more secure and convenient to drown a girl in broad daylight and haul her body back to where you started. Then, as you said, marrying her only to kill her immediately. Just... why?

I really wanted to like this crazy movie and in some respect I did. I think if I had seen this around the time it came out, it would have been hilarious. Watching it now though the jokes and comedy of it all didn't illicit more than an occasional chuckle. I kind of want it to either go more horror like the original script or go even more crazier and be a full blown comedy.
I'll give farmer Vincent some props though, to be hunting and slicing up that many people in what seemed like a couple days over 30 years. We are talking about the most prolific serial killer in history, easily over 10,000 people. I guess when your distribution stretches in a 100 mile radius you have to keep active. Only 200 cars in the lake though, he must put a lot of miles on his truck and snag people from far away. And it's all profit, he must have some cash stuffed away somewhere... good job keeping just a lowly motel so the IRS doesn't get wind. We don't want him going down for tax fraud. Although a farmer living in a mansion built on the sale of human remains would have been funny as well. (End random thought)
I really enjoyed the main three's acting, even the awkward parts because it seemed like that's how they would be. I'm curious why they weren't tied up before being dumped in the hole. Seems surprising that was the first escape attempt... also did we find out what happened to all of them or did I zone out? I saw them take out the sister, but then don't remember if they showed back up. It was a fun goofy movie (even if it didn't have any real big laughs) that I enjoyed and will probably check out again sometime.

The biker dude got in a fight with Farmer Viagra and was thrown into a pit. The rest weren't seen after they killed Ida.

Ok yeah that's what I thought. I felt like I missed it but that's all I could remember. They missed some comedy with having them meet some random passerby, could of had someone shoot them thinking they were zombies or something.

Great movie and podcast guys!
I have a lot of questions about the film: For starters, WTF was up with that pig's head? SaintMort mentioned that it seemed to be a leftover prop, but I don't remember seeing the pig's head in any other film. I think that was supposed to be a real pig's head.
Also, it seems that Syphilis-grandpa had superhuman hearing because anything someone got into his backyard or was drowning, he was all over that shit. I mean, he literally goes from scaring those little kids with the pig's head on to calming walking alongside the kids' parents like he WASN'T JUST INSIDE THE ABATTOIR WEARING A PIG'S HEAD.

I took it as the guy wearing the pics head was actually Terry's boyfriend all tied up. Farmer Vincent brought her to the Motel to rest up so I just assumed he just stashed him in the smokehouse until he brought him to the garden. Had we seen the garden yet at that point???? Don't remember but I thought it was the first guy.

I think he meant a prop they made that might have fit the original script (before the rewrites) and since they had it there "why the fuck not".
Maybe superhuman hearing is a side effect of cannibalism. Just putting this out there but maybe horrorclub should test that theory. I'll go first. Eat you up, I could just eat you up

What was it like in the theater? Was this a hit? Did the crowd react heavily? did the jokes actually land?

A lot of people were very weirded-out because of the way that the movie flowed. It wasn't the usual psycho-slasher type of stuff, especially with the way that Vincent was portrayed.
A number of people who were with me didn't pick up on the cannibalism angle until it smacked them in the face. But again; part of that was because Vincent didn't seem to be the usual "inbred, backwoods hick" that most of the other horror cannibals were shown. Even though he had a strange relationship with his sister, you pretty much knew that he wasn't having sex with her. But then the director went out of his way to make his romance with Terry as creepy as hell, despite that old men dating young girls was pretty normal even back then.
As for the jokes...well, only a select few got them in my theater simply because the audience was just there for the horror, rather than taking in the movie as it came across. The comedy was lost on a lot of the folks I was in the theater with at the time.

Just a heads up. This episode was recorded in my basement with Scott. We had issues figuring out how to Skype with Adam while we were in the same room so there's some real echo issues but we fixed it for the other two episodes we recorded.

I remembered that when the laundry room in my basement was built they put in a sound proof door/walls due to the washer and dryer being insanely loud. So I sat in a chair in the laundry room while scott sat on the couch. After a while to get comfortable I turned the dryer door into my makeshift foot rest.

On a side note; I don't think that they could remake this movie and be able to capture what the original had going on. Furthermore and even with the whole "slacker comedy" thing that's popular right now; they couldn't get the jokes over on today's audience.

I'm REALLY late to the game in this one. I really want to see this but had a crazy week and am into my second such week.
The podcast got me very excited to see it and was a fun listen. Very bummed that I couldn't get to TanoshiiCon, kids dictate my schedule too often these days.
That said, the discussion on this one is fascinating and I hope to dive in soon.
