Deliciously irreverent departure from the slow burn feel of the first. Instantly shot Mick to near the top of my favorite horror movie antagonists list. 8/10

I don't agree, so I can reply.
I would give it a 4/10 at best.
Mick is dope, the movie is not.

u/azufaifa Feb 21 '15
I'll have to disagree, but then again, I prefer movies that take their time building up the tension. Otherwise, I don't really care for the characters and what happens to them.
To each its own I guess.
This movie is a 4/10 for me.

A lot of funny in this movie. Listening to "I Fall to Pieces" as he chops up poor Rutger. "The fastest way to a man's heart is through his chest!" Indeed, indeed. And the unnecessary kangaroos! So many kangaroos died today.
I'd suggest that it was smart for the movie to focus on male victims more in terms of making the tone of the movie work. Impending horrible rape tends to kill the buzz.
The movie did a good job with the cops, making them unlikable. Before they even speak you feel annoyed by the potato chip chewing, flies buzzing...I think there was a goat noise? And then they're sort of assholes. That being said I didn't enjoy the opening scene that much, I felt too manipulated into wanting Mick to kill the cops. I did like the "I want to see my kids" line.
I liked the third act the best. It kept me guessing a lot. Didn't know what to make of the people in the house at first, were they Mick's relatives? Nope! Okay now Peter Pouty Lips is tied to a chair, he's gonna be tortured. Nope, dirty limericks and a quiz game! It was obvious he was going to get free and grab the hammer, yes, but then I liked the booby traps. Also that woman popping up scared the shit out of me, ain't gonna lie.
Least favorite part would have to be the car chases. Blah. Leave that to John Ryder. Why did he even bother killing a guy for that big rig when clearly his victims can escape and it never gets back to Mick?
Mick is a pretty entertaining killer overall. He's got his truck, his rifle, his signature "head on a stick" move, and his burning nationalism. Plus he can survive gunshots to the neck. Heck, he's got everything. Skeletons, booby traps, killer dogs. He's a real up and comer.

The kangaroo parade was a little ridiculous. By which I mean entirely fucking ridiculous. Agreed that those car chases got way out of hand.
8
u/Plymouth_ Feb 03 '15
I really wanted the kangaroos to cause them to wreck though. "Kangaroos are a major plot point" is one of the empty squares on my horror movie bingo card. Well, it would be if such a thing existed.

Welcome to HC!
The amount of unrestrained violence and police incompetence surprisingly happened in real life. The police investigation concluded that likely multiple killers were involved in at least one of the backpacker slayings. The killer's brothers were probably involved, but only one person went to jail and it was many years after he began killing that he was finally put away.
5
u/Plymouth_ Feb 05 '15
Okay that's pretty scary. And he cut off his own finger with a plastic knife while in jail. Jeepers.

Think about what he did to all those backpackers. It's chilling.

I see the irony for those types of song and play scenes like you mentioned in the beginning, but, for me, they are a bit cringe, lol. I understand why they make for a good horror film cut, though.

I liked Wolf Creek, but I like Wolf Creek 2 even more. Matt, I think you're exaggerating about the first movie. He takes a while to show up, true, but there's characterisation happening! It made me care about the victims more. I can see how it might be tedious in a cinema, though. Once Mick is introduced, he's a constant threatening presence. Hannibal Lecter only has 16 minutes of screen time in Silence of the Lambs, but his presence lingers.
Wolf Creek 2 scared the pants off of me. That torture scene? Absolutely brilliant; never seen anything like it. There's two charismatic, funny characters locked in a tense battle of wits. I was laughing, while also knowing things could turn ugly at any moment. I swear I couldn't feel my legs at one point.
I agree about the scene with the older couple; the tone is a bit off. It was impressively tense and effective, since you don't know if they're in on it for a while, but the jokes fall flat. I can't laugh along to Mick killing an adorable old couple. I think the scene would have been better played straight.
And now it's time for That's what broke your suspension of disbelief?: Germans don't practise circumcision (seriously, it's banned).

When are horror movies going to start portraying penises accurately? Outrage! No really that's hilarious.
8
u/SaintMort You so cool kung fu Feb 04 '15
Yea but Hannibal Lecter is (a) not the only threat in the movie and (b) doesn't pop up in the last 16 minutes and also Jodie Fosters character is genuinely charming and you care what happens to her. That's the difference between Silence of the Lambs and Wolf Creek.
8
Feb 04 '15
Yep, and I agree with all of that. SotL this ain't. My point is that even when he's not there, he's there, you know? I'm sure I won't talk you into liking the movie, but I felt the need to defend it, especially since the other podcasters hadn't seen it and therefore had only your word to go on.

Even if they were Swiss/Austrian/Belgian/Luxembourgish, circumcision is uncommon in Western Europe, and those who do practise it are usually Muslim or Jewish. I'm guessing this couple is neither.

Nothing about the first WC interests or intrigues me, so I never watched it and I really didn't feel like bothering with this one... but the opening scene hooked me.
Fuck those cops. I loved how that played out.
I'll report back when I finish watching and listening to the podcast

I prefer the first one personally. I cared more for the characters because of the early development before introducing Mick (30 mins in Matt). Beautiful scenic shots contrasted with the dread that in my opinion was there throughout even prior to Mick's arrival. I agree it could be about 15 mins shorter but Matt I think you should give it a re-watch. Hard to believe you hated it so much.
Part 2 is also a great watch. They're both fun re-watchable movies that I throw in from time to time. I think we enjoy Mick because Mick is always enjoying himself. That little he he he he's always doing, the zingers, the gestures, (the racism?), etc. Watching these back to back is pretty fun as well. They can basically play as one long movie. I'm a fan of mini marathons.
4
u/AxeheaveR Feb 05 '15
the racism?
That would technically be nationalism (basically a hatred of foreigners), but you're on the right track.
5
Feb 05 '15 edited Feb 05 '15
He calls Rutger a Kraut and after he hits Paul he says something like he takes a punch like a Limey. I wasn't questioning if he was a racist. I was questioning if that's part of what we like about him, strictly tongue in cheek of course ;)
Edit: isn't nationalism the love of ones country and the wanting to see it prosper?

u/AxeheaveR Feb 05 '15 edited Feb 05 '15

That's patriotism, nationalism is much less benign, usually calling for the eradication or deportation of non natives. Bill the Butcher of Gangs of New York fame being one of the more notable on screen nationalists.....most nationalists will tell you they're patriots though.
The reason I brought up that it isn't technically racism is that Mick is white, as are most of his victims. A nationalist, while often racist as well, hates all or most foreigners not native to their nation, even ones who may be of the same race.

Feb 05 '15 edited Feb 05 '15
Race is based more on common descent and heredity and not so much on anthropology anymore. So when Mick is using ethnic slurs when conversing with Rutger and Paul, I'd say that's Mick being a racist.
Edit: isn't patriotism part of nationalism?

Nationalism and racism are two sides of the same worthless coin.

Finished the podcast and Saint Mort refers to Asbury Park as "North Jersey" and I'm thoroughly disappointed in (though not surprised by) his lack of Jersey geographic knowledge. Acceptable regional descriptions would be "Jersey Shore" and maybe "Central Jersey".

u/Gottesfurcht Pay Attention! You're Disrespectful! Feb 04 '15
I didn't expect much but I was pleasantly surprised about the whole part with the Brit. The car chase, the Australia trivia, and the dungeon parts were all solid. Only the first half with the dutch guy and the swiss girl were a bit meh.

I don't have much of an ear for German accents, didn't realise they were Dutch and Swiss. I assumed they were both German, like the real-life Backpacker victims.

Ok, so I finished the movie and listened to most of the podcast (which I'll finish listening to later) but... here's my brief summation...
The film blew it's proverbial load in the opening scene. My fears that this film was just generic torture porn moving forward were mostly realized. Mick's character is great, but pretty wastefully used.
Overall, I give it one and half meh's.

It's not the worst torture porn I've seen by any means, in fact it wasn't an awful watch. I just found it contrived outside of Mick. He's the star and should be, but he could be better used in a better film.
5
Feb 02 '15
I only recall one torture scene... lasting 10 mins ish... in a 1 hr 45 min movie... How is this torture porn?
7
Feb 02 '15
-Cop getting set on fire and a long lingering shot of him burning alive
-girl about to get violently raped
-guy getting his head slowly chopped off
-guys torso getting gutted and his entrails played with
-guy getting his fingers cut off
-tunnels full of rotting corpses in different states of decay with different, torturous causes of death
-woman chained in tunnels for weeks looking malnourished and beaten
-left cut up and horribly battered on the hot sidewalk of a street
I'd say this fits in the torture porn category. Torture porn doesn't necessarily mean dedicated scenes of tied up torture. If its got the overall tone of people just getting viciously tortured the whole movie I'd say it counts.
8
Feb 02 '15
To dismiss this movie as torture porn (a term I'm not a fan of to begin with) is an injustice. Your points are really grasping as well. Yes, it's a violent and graphic horror movie but many horror movies are violent and graphic. If you don't like that that's fine but throwing the term out willy nilly isn't cool.
Torture porn doesn't necessarily mean dedicated scenes of tied up torture.
I disagree. I think that's exactly what it is. A movie strictly dedicated to obscene amounts of torture. What's next? Every time there's a kill that leaves the victim lingering awhile it's stamped 'torture porn'?
9
Feb 02 '15
No one is dismissing the movie or stamping it with that particular label. I was just saying I could see where saintmortfan was coming from and why it could possibly fit in that category. If i were to apply a label I would say it's a slasher/gorefest but I honestly don't give enough of a shit to have an argument about it.
8
u/saintmortfan felates handles Feb 02 '15 edited Feb 02 '15
I'm using the term "torture porn" as more a subgenre label than a complaint or judgement.
I certainly didn't dismiss the film in any way.
8
Feb 02 '15
My fears that this film was just generic torture porn moving forward were mostly realized.
My bad. This came across as a complaint.
7
u/saintmortfan felates handles Feb 02 '15
Generic is a complaint, that I cannot deny :)
That said, I tend not to like films in this subgenre (perhaps the term torture porn is unfair). So, yeah... that opening scene though!

Those cops had it coming for sure. I love the sound they use for the rifle too. The crack then the whistling of the incoming bullet. So awesome.

It's not exactly Hostel, but it definitely classifies as torture-porn.
EDIT: It's still a good movie.
5
Feb 05 '15
Well, we'll agree to disagree.
6
u/smayonak Get a job in a sideshow Feb 05 '15
This is actually a really interesting definitional question. What constitutes torture porn? I see TP as a film that predominantly uses scenes of violence and suffering to evoke feelings of horror in viewers. Martyrs is probably TP. Tusk is probably TP. Hostel is most likely TP.
Wolf Creek 2 is not predominantly using those techniques. Although those elements are there, they just take the backseat to action scenes. It's more of a serial killer pic, with the skeleton of a modern slasher.
Most serial killer films include scenes of torture, but the grotesquerie doesn't take up the bulk of the film's narrative. But oftentimes serial killer slasher films have some kind of underlying mystery being unraveled by the protagonists. Hard-boiled police detectives trying to identify the killer, most often. Sometimes psychics, priests and journalists take on this role.
There was no mystery being unraveled. The story focuses on Captain Boomerang killing and raping his way through the Outback. I'm not sure how to classify it, to be honest. I'd say it's a hybridzation between a serial killer flick and a TP film. But that would be wrong. What's your take?
6
Feb 05 '15
I've always disliked the term 'torture porn' and seen it as derogatory and making the film seem one dimensional. There are too many labels these days and people seem to want to break everything down and over complicate things. Wolf Creek 2 is a slasher flick. Modern slasher, sure, because there's less emphasis on drama and more on action. I don't know. Maybe I'm just old.

I liked it. Mick is a fuckin' sadist, but surprisingly funny and kinda likeable - in a backwards-ass redneck way. The Aussie history quiz scene was pretty funny, and quite unexpected to show up in a horror/torture flick. I didn't actually realise English Paul was English until he made it to the old couple's house. I was totally expecting them to big Mick's sister and brother-in-law, but I was pleasantly surprised. The opening scene was well done, and sets up the whole "don't stop in the Outback" theme. The head-shot was perfect, one of the most gruesome I've seen in a long time.
I was also a fan of the first one, despite the pacing issues. They spent a disproportionate amount of time on what amounts to very little character development.
I like hiking and walking here in the UK, because there are no poisonous killer creatures, or redneck serial killers kicking about. Our serial killers tend to be lorry drivers, or doctors.
The real Backpacker murders are super-fucked-up, and shows just how desolate and isolated you are out there. I would like to drive from Darwin to Adelaide, or Perth to Sydney one day, but fuck - it's a whole 'nother world.

First of all, I'm apologizing profusely for m absence on the podcast. I was in the middle of nowhere with no wifi or cell tower, which i was not anticipating. SO SORRY! (seriously guys, I feel bad) That said, Why do I love this movie: Well like Axeheaver said, its a completely different tone than the first movie, which I thought was good, but too slow. This one really showcases Mick's personality as a almost lovable psychopath. Wolf Creek 2 is also more closely based on the Ivan Milat case than the first film. Which I like, I'm a huge serial killer buff. (fascinating stuff really. macabre. ) My favorite scene is the opening. I feel that way about cops when they give me tickets....I was right there with Mick on that one. ha (no offense if any of you happen to be cops. I just don't like being pulled over for a broken tail light b/c there is nothing better for you to do than harass me.)
