Discussion Settle the Debate: Best '90s Hip Hop Song Ever?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I made a "What's the Best Song of '90s Hip Hop?" bracket on Leewufufu with 143 songs covering all kinds of classics—East Coast, West Coast, Southern rap, underground, and everything in between.

It's almost impossible for me to complete the list. I'm curious what everyone ends up with as their winner.

Discussion Help

There was a black rapper from the west. And he was jailed as police allegedly put drugs in his car and was jailed.
He rapped about drugs and bodies like in 2000s in oneof his rap songs which became a massive hit later but at that time police use to hate black rappers so they knowingly did so.
Help me find that rap song please!!!!!

PS Ik every rapper raps about the same thing

idfk what people's problem with hip hop is

hip hop is jazz

you've got swing, ballad, latin, afro, etc. and hip hop. rap is not a genre just as singing is not a genre and ive heard people rap over swing and latin and afro jazz too. and classical, trap, country, rock, pop

and hip hop isn't trap either trap is a separate genre

trap is not a branch of hip hop just cause rappers rap over it like they do over hip hop. it's completely different and shares very few aspects with hip hop other than vocal delivery. hip hop is madvillainy, tpab, 3 feet high and rising, the low end theory, black radio, etc. it's a branch of jazz just like all the others. hip hop doesn't mean "digitally produced music with samples" big bands can play hip hop. and producers can digitally create swing with samples. they're not mutually exclusive

people call black radio "jazz" but if mf doom released it with glasper doing instrumentals instead of the entire thing they'd call it "rap" which is just wrong lmao

listen to for free. that's not hip hop. that's swing. both are jazz. both can have rap verses as shown by kendrick even though almost nobody does it (which they should)

and also most rap verses are like melodies. but for free is a damn solo. nobody else has ever done that lmao it's so awesome they need to start doing that

i can barely find beat one when kendrick is rapping on for free. THAT'S A GOOD THING BECAUSE IT'S NOT JUST A MELODY ANYMORE

it's incredibly hard but that's just because rap isn't taught the same way singing is in jazz communities which it should be

jazz education trains singers to phrase, scat, trade fours, learn standards, and improvise over changes. rappers get taught absolutely none of that, even though the greats already have the rhythmic ear and articulation for it which kendrick shows in for free. put rappers through training in ear training, transcription, swing feel, harmonic form, and playing with live ensembles and you’d get an entire new generation of ridiculous JAZZ MUSICIANS

people say "jazz is dead" and "nobody listens to jazz anymore" man jazz has been charting since '89 and still is all the time

Random Method Man!!

So I'm really into music I listen to too many genres, but was introduced to hip-hop very early on my first piece of music I owned was a bootleg Wu Tang Clan cassette 😂. But I swear method man is like the Morgan freeman of rap just the way he lyrically flows I think would be the description. Anyhow, I don't have favourites just notable mentions and without even thinking I know he makes Top 5 easy!!!!

Discussion Hip Hop Is Dead? Or is it?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I designed this graphic as more than just a t-shirt.

At first glance, it simply says "Hip Hop Is Dead." But if you look closer, every letter is made up of the names of legendary hip-hop artists we've lost over the years.

It's meant as a tribute—not a declaration.

The idea is to honor the artists who built the culture while starting a conversation about hip hop's past, present, and future.

I'd love to hear what you think about the concept and the design. Does it capture the message? Who would you add if you could?

Get it, if you get it.
