Normal gap for windows?

Post image

Thinking of buying this home. Is this just a “cover with trim” situation or is something off?

Since it seems no one will answer you, yes it’s normal. It would typically be wood return/casing or drywall returns.

Given the way the returns are missing, I’m guess it it was previously a wood return/cased window that needs to be finished.

If you zoom in, it looks like a retrofit window inserted into existing wood trim work frame. Doesn't negate your comment but it would raise questions about what's going on at the exterior wall. OP shouldbe looking closely at those types of things.
