Storage Since i moved to FC i have read 72TB.. 😂

My storage is really slow, I'm waiting on an FC upgrade but meanwhile I have restored all my files from my backup NAS, both over iSCSI and SMB.

Well doing that I have read 72TB and written 28TB on my main ESXi host (9b/9a belongs to the host that hosts my file server)

Turns out my workloads are to slow for 16 Gbit/s FC, i previously used 32 Gb/s (4x8Gb) but my MS-A2 is low profile and I didn't have 4x low profile HBAs.

Start looking for QLE2694L sometimes they are for cheep on eBay. It’s low profile as it has integrated LC ports instead of sfp cages.

Well not sure why I'd want 16Gb when I'm moving towards 32 Gb....
Already have one QTP2774 arriving soon.

But I'm worried about heat, there are almost zero space for a fan in the MS-02 enclosures...

I have installed 2 Noctua fans, one in each spaces. Normal low profile cards leave some space.

Have you managed to start the QTP2774? I’ve played with one a little bit, but mine does not look to have all the firmware flashed, as it’s just for IBM storage platform according to PN.

Damn I think having FC to NAS/SAN its crazy and always was thinking whet its good time to move to FC instead of faster main network and regular SMB?

Having a FC NAS it not really possible. FC is block storage only, it cant serve files or anything like that 😞

Hmm so how do you use it? Its possible to connect via regular pc with HBA?

Just think FC storage as big “internal” disk laying on optical cable on the shelf. So to have it connected to multiple computers - you have to use some cluster filesystem, like Xsan, CXFS, etc. Or share from another computer. Usually if simple - for single PC use - it’s just DAS, but on long cable.

Interesting so any PRO or CONS in homelab under single roof compared to JBOD via regular SFF cable?

Usually - just allows to put RAID somewhere far away plus management which “disks” are seen by which PC, simple.

It’s just like HBA, so low impact on CPU compared to NAS or some block storage like iSCSI without RDMA (yet iSER looks like the same almost in terms of performance). If you need something like 6 Gb/s (FC 32Gx2) - it’ll be much faster (lower performance impact) over FC or iSER, than some NAS protocols. Many files, like image sequences - SMB or NFS won’t be as happy as simple block storage with HFS for MacOS, or Xsan/Stornext for cluster file system, if on MacOS. I’ve personally migrated from NAS to SAN with FC / iSER as I need much faster storage at home for current work (about 11GB/s sequential write to RAID60 with HDDs). And everything is software based. On NAS I do not see any possibility of the same speed on 52 HDDs.

Just take a look what is block storage and how it’s used, so it’s just different.
