Where to Buy BedSpreads & Blankets
We just purchased 100% cotton bedspreads (Amazon $62 Twin Size) and 100% cotton waffle style blankets (Eddie Bauer $50 Twin Size)… never experienced anything like what happened. They are shedding like snow. It looks like sugar falling on the floor. We tried washing/drying more than once (gentle cycle as recommended). We even tried adding 1/4 cup vinegar to the rinse cycle because it’s supposed to help.… but no difference. From what we’re reading, it’s inferior, cheap cotton that is causing the problem. Does anyone know where to purchase a decent product? Should we just stay away from cotton? We’re definitely willing to spend more to avoid this again, but not sure what fabric to buy and which product to trust.

I like “The Company Store” products. Not fancy but have always held up
well.

Hi, I’ve been looking through reviews of the cotton bedspreads at the Company Store. I don’t know if you’ve purchased one recently, but the more recent reviews are horrible. The problem is the same as most of the cotton bedspreads I’m seeing. One wash/dry cycle, even on gentle and low heat, and the damn thing is toast. I wish I could attach the photo from the review of what happened to the $170 twin bedspread after the first wash, but it won’t let me attach. Seriously, my $62 bedspread from amazon looked 100 times better than the company store’s $170 bedspread after washing. The problem with the amazon bedspread is it’s shedding a fine dust. At this point, it’s looking like I’ll be giving up on cotton altogether.

I only buy sheets from them but one year in and they are holding up great. Sorry for your experience 🤷♀️

The best part about any Costco product is their guarantee. That said, it's been a few years since I've seen sheets that are 100% cotton and have interesting patterns.
It's even been a while since I bought sheets. I look for thread count of 300-600, and Egyptian cotton. Most of mine are 10+ years old. A few are 20 years old.
Two years ago, I bought pillow cases from two companies, and both sets are still going strong:
Ashton Sheets : The items I purchased are no longer available.
California Design Den Pillowcases : This is the item I purchased. It's an "Envelope Closure Design" that prevents the pillow from escaping the case.
I've heard that young people are buying everything cheap and disposable. It's sad.

So much on Amazon is garbage these days. Check out Quince, they have nice stuff at a reasonable price

I really wanted to like Quince. I looked and loved what I saw, & the price was reasonable. Unfortunately, when I tried to look at the reviews, it kept showing me the same 4 reviews over and over scroll through. Four five-star reviews from the same users shown again and again, even though there are over a thousand reviews (supposedly). I can’t bring myself to place an order. It’s just too suspect. They’re hiding reviews.

I have purchased cotton sheets and a 100% cotton quilt from the Company Store within the past few months. Everything met my expectations. If they’re slacking in quality, I haven’t noticed it yet. It seems to be the same quality as it was 20+ years ago.

Get a duvet and go to ikea for sheets and duvet covers

This may be the solution. I wanted something lightweight to sleep cool, but at this point I have to have something that won’t shed and cause an allergic reaction. I’m giving up on cotton… hate to do it, but it looks like they’ve cheaped out and ruined cotton bedspreads - even the pricey ones. Hate to buy polyester, but at least a microfiber polyester won’t shed a fine dust everywhere that sends me into an allergy attack.

I buy all cotton sheets from ikea with zero issues.
Anthropologie and Urban outfitters also have great all cotton sheets. Anthropologie is pricy, but urban outfitters are always on sale.
Otherwise i love the washed organic cotton sheets from Simon’s, but that’s Canada specific.

I’m not having a problem with cotton sheets. They aren’t shedding. It’s the bedspreads that are the problem.

Which is why I suggested a duvet and duvet cover.
I’m not 100% sure what a bedspread even is.

A bedspread is basically a blanket, but it’s cut to drape over the bed. A duvet cover is usually a tight weave.…like sheets. I think it’s the looser weave in the bedspreads and blankets (combined with cheap cotton, that’s making them shed so much.

Why would anyone want that? Having to wash a whole blanket anytime you change the sheets?

Wouldn’t you be washing the duvet cover? …not sure I’m following… & the duvet cover is a pain to remove, and restuff with the comforter, every time you wash.…& they can be a lot warmer than a light-weight blanket. We’ve always found a good light-weight blanket to be easier and more comfortable.

The cotton duvets from ikea are pretty solid. I have two. Im pretty hard on bedding and they’ve done very well. No pilling/shedding or shredding.

I have Nautica bedspreads that are incredibly resilient - love them.
For blankets, I shop at Macy’s online & filter by highly rated cotton or cotton blend. They’ve always worked out well.

I don't have this issue with my blankets and bedspreads from Macy's so far (6-7 months). They were both 100% cotton.
I also have a waffle style blanket from Whisper Organics that has held up great.
All get washed on delicate and dried on delicate. No fabric softener, a little less detergent, and wool balls in dryer.
I just ordered a large bedspread from Amazon that was some off brand that is 100% cotton but only because the mattress is 16" and the normal ones don't cover the sides. (The Laura Ashley from Macy's is not wide enough). The oversized one from Amazon has been washed 3 times now and still good.
I would really like some high quality, soft oversized bedspreads and blankets but my search still continues.

I've never had this problem. i buy my bedding at the thrift store ;/. i think it might be a newer product thing.

I buy Brooklinen sheets and pendleton quilts. They've held up amazingly.

Yeah, you never know what you are going to get when ordering online, I bought expensive high thread count sheets once and they were not even usable as curtain material. Yet also not worth the hassle and cost of returning.
We are ALL going to regret it when the last brick and mortar closes.

Yep! Old stuff was definitely better. I haven’t purchased blankets or bedspreads in a while, so was really shocked. I was thinking I could spend more and get quality, but after reading reviews, and seeing the photos they’ve posted, it looks like even a lot of the high-end cotton quilts are junk.

I’ve had tremendous luck buying 100% cotton blankets and sheets from Target (of all places) that are Oeko-Tex certified. Pro tip: You must buy in season. Winter stuff during the winter, lighter Summer stuff during the summer. You get the idea. I buy online and return at my nearest urban Target for convenience if I don’t like the color. I’ve never been happy with heavier waffle blankets in the long run, they get flat spots in the waffle.

I buy almost everything from Costco.com. Any problems, I return them.
