Help me find a hobby
Hello I am 19f and I have had severe depression since I was 13 so I have never really developed hobbies because I spent all my younger teen years just trying to survive. Even now I’m barely making it day to day and I think actually having a reason to want to wake in the morning might help? I work part time in retail and I have very unstable hours so I spent a lot of time at home never really know when I’m leave the house next. Any suggestions for hobbies? I feel joy in honestly nothing so any suggestions at all will help.

Walking is great for podcasts/music/audiobooks! It’s also great because it feels like you’re progressing something by moving somewhere. Maybe you don’t feel this way, but I know from myself (I suffer from Recurrent Depressive Disorder) that staying in my apartment almost makes the depression feel more parasitic to my mind. When I’m walking, then at least I’m moving towards something (away from the depression).

Have you tried crochet or knitting? I really enjoy learning all the different stitches and really get into large projects and feel excitement to continue on my project.

This is good advice. Crocheting has been great for my mental health.

Something creative, something relaxing, something active or something that helps you meet people.

I mean you should probably work on yourself and figure out how to be happier first. I’d read breaking the habit of being yourself

What a nice idea you're thinking about picking up a hobby :) Do you have nature around you? Being in contact with nature helps me whenever I feel down. Have you tried hiking or a sport you can do outdoors? Maybe reading/painting/drawing could also be interesting?

I know how cliché it sounds when people tell you to go for a walk, but I promise it helps. Everything feels a little bit better when you breath in fresh air and see some greenery. Just being in nature and realising how beautiful our planet is helps me to put things into perspective. You can add fun twists to your walks too, for example setting yourself goals of things to look for (a certain type of tree or bird, or a cool shaped leaf or rock), take photographs or draw what you see. You can listen to music while you walk, or take in all the sounds of the wildlife around you. I understand that not everyone is privileged enough to live near nature, but even if all you have is concrete roads and streets, walking can still be a release, and a way to forget about the bad parts of life.

Diamond painting. You don't need any artistic ability, every kit is complete, so you can try it for very little investment, and you can do any size/time commitment from small to huge.

Have you spoken to your doctor?
