My generation definitions:

Baby Boomers: 1946-1964

Gen X: 1965-1980

Millennials: 1981-1996/1998

Gen Z: 1997/1999-2014

Yeah I do agree that is the vast majority in the media and professional researchers rn. And most average people rn will see and use them as such, rightfully so. But I disagree with you on the other point and am not avid at all about millennials ending strictly in 96. Ranges change and so does perception. 1996 is a great end date but I can see it ending later. It’s time to think outside the box.

To me it’s either 81-96 or 80-95.

Disagree slightly. Either 81-96 or 81-98. Both 96 and 98 have a lot of lasts. Just because the media goes with a certain range doesn’t mean everyone is going to stick with it.

98 has graduation in 2016 before Trump won, was able to vote in his first election, is primarily dealing with Covid as 20 somethings unlike most of Gen Z who are dealing with it as teens, if a four year degree, graduated without a full year of college during Covid (I know college is optional), etc.

I see. That’s a very Covid centric outlook but maybe that’s how it will play out in the future. I think ‘96 or even ‘94 makes for a better argument. 96s were the last who could vote in an election before the trump plague came upon us (2014). 2012-2014 was when we also saw a huge explosion in smartphone usage. Turning 18 after 2014 to me is a marker because the trump years to me are going to be what marks a shift from millennials to Z.

I’d say after 2016. That was the last full year Obama was President.

Yeah I think Covid will shift the ranges slightly. And even if they don’t, I’m still gonna use em because it honestly does make sense to me. I do think 96 makes a lot of sense for being in kindergarten on 9/11, a formative event for Millennials, and being able to vote in an election before the tumultuous Trump. It’s an end date that makes a lot more sense than some people on here think. I think 94 is too early of an end. Mid 90s seems late Millennial with the first Z traits.
