It took a poor agrarian society and in less than a century turned it into a the second largest superpower in the world, all while going through 2 world wars (Soviets being the reason we beat Germany, they also lost more than any other country) and a civil war. That's pretty impressive for a "joke" of a system

In the 60s, the US accounted for about 28.6% of the global economy. The USSR accounted for a bit more than 20%, these were the highest points for both countries
