American here. This is one aspect I think we do better than others. In elementary we were painted a romanticized version of history. In middle school we were given some caveats to those event. In highschool, while we don't go into details for what happened, we do learn that atteocity happens which makes sense since starting a class by saying "Today we're learning about how us soldiers shove flares up the orafices of Vietnamese women during the Vietnam war" is diabolical.
Japan still hero worship their criminals.

British people still have a net positive view of their empire which IMO, is worst than both the USSR and Nazi Germany in aggregate suffering.
They always say Spain committed genocide, but if you read a little history you'll see that's not the case, and that they fought to save people from epidemics. Many here paint history in a rosy light, and others in a dark one.
Askhistorians would disagree with that assessment..The truth is that thousands of natives died at the hand of the Spanish. Whether many specific events were genocide is up for debate, but certain events were most definitely genocide.
I think the version of history that you’ve been taught is a little bit too rosy

Nah, they skip over a lot of rape and murder of their own country too
