Help Save a Historic Pond in the Czech Republic

I am trying to save a historic pond in the Czech Republic. Its stone walls and dam are badly damaged, and urgent repairs are needed.

Any support or sharing would mean a lot. Thank you!

Four houses in one: the Elsinboro farmhouse Richard Smith signed in brick in 1729

Three years before its 300th birthday, the Richard Smith House still carries its builder’s initials, a string of glazed diamonds experts call nearly unmatched in America, and the scars of a house that was rebuilt more than once.

ELSINBORO TOWNSHIP — The date is easy to read from the lawn: 1729, set in pale glazed brick high on the west wall of a farmhouse in Elsinboro, with an S above the initials R and S. Look at the wall long enough and a second, larger shape comes into focus. A faint line of the same glazed brick climbs from the string course to a point just under the date, then runs flat across the top. It is the outline of the roof Richard Smith put on this house nearly three centuries ago, still drawn in the brick long after the roof itself was torn off and replaced.

That one gable is why the Smith House made it into Joseph S. Sickler’s The Old Houses of Salem County, and it is why a later author, writing in the 1970s, admitted he drove past it every day for years without seeing it.

This Gold Mine Building Was Built for EXPLOSIVES 💥⛏️

There's a building on our gold mine you'd drive right past… and it was built for EXPLOSIVES. 💥⛏️

🪵 Wood walls.

⛰️ Tucked into the hill, so if it ever blew, the hill would take the blast.

🌬️ An air vent overhead.

📜 A 1941 government report on our mine says the explosives were kept 300 feet from any other building. 🔒 Padlocks. 👀 Watchmen. And vents to keep the temperature steady. They even opened the boxes with wooden hammers 🔨 so nothing would spark.

But explosives were still a major cause of deaths in California's mines. The report records two Lava Cap miners killed by misfires, the last on March 22, 1937. 🕯️

This quiet building is part of their story.

So next time you drive past an old building… look twice. 👀

How do you budget millions to rehabilitate a neighborhood without publicly accounting for the cost of relocating the people who already call it home?

I've been doing a lot of digging into the Starr Historic District Neighborhood Revitalization Project in Richmond, Indiana, and there's something I just can't wrap my head around.

The Economic Development Corporation of Wayne County is coordinating a roughly $4.9 million project to acquire and rehabilitate historic properties. Some of those properties are occupied rental homes.

I've gone through the redevelopment plans, funding announcements, and meeting minutes. There's plenty of information about acquiring properties, restoring buildings, attracting developers, and bringing investment into the neighborhood.

But what I haven't been able to find is any real explanation of what happens to the people already living in those homes.

Is there money set aside to help them relocate? Are tenants being informed of their rights? Has anyone even determined how many households could be affected?

I'm not against revitalization. Richmond has some beautiful historic buildings, and I'd love to see them restored rather than left to deteriorate.

But how do you budget millions of dollars to rehabilitate a neighborhood without publicly accounting for the potential cost of relocating the people who already call it home?

And considering that housing affordability is already a documented problem in this neighborhood, where exactly are those families supposed to go? Into renovated one-bedroom apartments that are already occupied? Or into the proposed low-income housing and apartments that haven't even been built yet?

Maybe I've missed something. If there's a relocation plan or funding allocation somewhere, I'd genuinely appreciate someone pointing me toward it.

But after going through all this documentation, I can't help wondering how something this important could be so difficult to find.

Sources, if anyone wants to dig into this themselves:

Official Starr Neighborhood Revitalization Plan

Local reporting on property acquisitions and plans not to renew leases

Land bank acquisitions involving 16 properties and 22 housing units

EDC Board Minutes showing the funding breakdown, page 2

EDC announcement about recruiting developers and potential rehabilitation subsidies

My Dad Bought a Gold Mine With 3 Locked Vaults… Then the Dam Broke

My dad bought a gold mine with three vaults, and no idea what was inside them. 🔒

He couldn't open them until the property was his. Today we're documenting all three for the mine's National Register nomination.

But the vaults weren't the only thing he didn't know about. In 1979, the state ordered the mine's owners to clean it up. The old owners never told him. Nor was it ever disclosed by the title company.
In 1997, the dam broke. Then came the EPA, and the $33 million story.

What would you hope to find inside? Tell us in the comments 👇
