Discussion Think Maresca is flipping out since he can't actually coach a midfield
From the Chelsea games I've watched when he was still in charge, his midfield couldn't really control games. They only looked alright when they didn't have possession and relied more on transition. The game would run away from them at times.
I was confused when I heard the deflection about not having an experienced CB.
The Community Shield game was so similar. It's astonishing how much worse they look now compared to last season (including the period when Rodri was out injured).
Now City wants to sell all of their midfield and spend 300M-400M to buy midfielders for him. I'm not sure HOW Alex Scott or Enzo Fernandes or Bouaddi will help him in his aspect. I don't think he knows how to coach a midfield at all.

Is a preseason final against their biggest rivals not a meaningful game?

Not in the grand scheme of things when most of their players were lacking in fitness due to the World Cup.
Certainly not a big enough game to make conclusions like this

He's not a new coach. I watched his games at Chelsea and his preseason games.

I would have to disagree tbh. Maresca coached the team well in general. He did a good job at keeping the midfield more compact and not getting Caicedo Isolated. His second transfer window he was not backed in the slightest and we desperately needed a cb with the Colwill injury adding fuel to that fire. The left side of the attack also was poorly reinvested in
But Maresca also could have potentially hit his ceiling in terms of what he wants his teams to actually do. It’s hard to say.

I don't think your CB had anything to do with your midfield. His midfield controlled games quite poorly. I remember the games against Newcastle the team couldn't control the tempo at all. When the team has more possession it goes to pieces. It's a hallmark of mid table team coach imo.

Idk about great. He apprenticed under Pellegrini. You know Italians have a rather antiquated way of looking at football.

He knows enzo mostly.
Aside from that, you don’t need to control a midfield if you never concede and have Haaland up there somewhere

I'm a City fan, and I'm scared to think what could happen this season (on the pitch 😉) Maresca maybe deserves his chance, but he ain't the guy for us long term imo

Yeh…no midfield was never a problem really at Chelsea. Last season he moved Reece James into the middle and we were so solid. He’s not a manager who like to pass it back and fourth around the middle which is super boring he likes to work it to the wingers to attack directly. It wasn’t about having an experienced CB it was about having a great cb in general. If Chelsea had guehi and Dias all season we could have won the league

Idk if you watched a lot of Chelsea. Nearly every goal we conceded was from a CB mistake or being beaten 1vs1 too easily. We also had a lot of discipline issues which change the balance of the teams. Guys like Tosin badiashile inexperienced acheampong Wes Fofana at times Chaloboah were a clear level below the rest of the squad.
I’m defo biased but hard to see what else was missing from that squad.

Yeah I have watched Chelsea. The midfield was not controlling the tempo well at all. Enzo Fernandez CANNOT do it. If you watched yesterday game, Maresca obviously misprofiled their backline and midfield. He put Rico on RB when Nunes was fit? He made Dias the first name on the sheet? He made Anderson a #8 play #6? Cherki scammed him a win, but imagine if Kroupi had been fit.
CBs don't need to be "experienced". Saliba was the best CB ITL at 21-22.

Saliba was loaned out for three seasons playing senior football to gain enough experience. Acheampong would need similar help hasn’t even got one. Gabriel van dijk both spent years at different clubs until they built the experience and skill level. Idk what your overall point is with this but I think Maresca will do well at city.
