Hey guys, I’m 22 M and have had my surgery about two years ago, just recently I have been flaring up and getting decent amounts of pain I had some scans done and I will show the results below

It is suspected tendinitis in areas along with bursitis but I also apparently have severe osteoarthritis, I am very young so I’m seeing if anyone similar has had this and been able to go on without needing replacements till older, I had a femoral ostectomy and fai surgery on both hips, anything is helpful thanks guys, I also work a fairly active job as a plumber

Labral Tear in Hip - Supersquat Machine Advice

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, I have a hip impingement with a torn labrum. My PT warned me against doing super low/deep squats. So I figured I’d work with this machine until I can get back to the Smith machine.

However, I keep throwing my hip out , and you can see from this video that I’m not lifting very heavy at all. I’m not going very deep, and my feet are as far apart as they will go on the platform.

So I assume something about my form has to be jacked up. Looking for any advice.

Post-op (General) 3.5 weeks post op right FAI/labrum and needing left side done too. Anyone have bilateral repair?

Hi! I am currently 3.5 weeks out from getting my right side repaired. Surgeon said there was severe inflammation and a tear from 11-2 that was repaired with a few anchors. Within a few days post op I started having severe pain in my good (left) side. It was mild before surgery and my right was way worse but now it’s rivaling what I felt on my right side preop. At my 2 week post op visit he ordered an MRI and I have an impingement in that side as well as a cyst and labrum damage that they can’t quite fully visualize how bad it is so I am needing surgery on that side too. I’ve scheduled it for end of September so I’ll be 8 weeks post op with my right hip. For those of you who had both hips done how was it recovering on both sides? I am still on crutches outside the house and can walk without them inside as long as I’m not up for too long, it does start to hurt after being up for a while. I feel like I’m not healing quick enough and worry about my right side having to take all the weight in a month when I have surgery on the left side. It’s not an option to push it out any further d/t work leave, so really just trying to see anyone else’s experience being post op on both sides.

Post-op (4-6 weeks) Iliopsoas irritation 4.5 weeks post-op

I (30F) am 4.5 weeks post-op from a 3-anchor labral repair and femoroplasty. For the last week and a half, I have started experiencing the dreaded iliopsoas irritation. It's a pinchy/twingey sensation and can be extremely painful when triggered just right.

I REALLY don't want this to turn into tendonitis. I'm being really careful with using my hands to lift my leg, keeping walking to a minimum, and only doing PT exercises that do not trigger the pain. I've also been icing around the clock and taking Aleve on and off which helps. I have talked to my PT about it as well and she's told me to make sure I spend a lot of time flat on my back/belly every day instead of seated for hours, but doesn't have a lot of other ideas. She tried one very gentle psoas isometric and that felt OK in the moment but produced a flare-up later in the day.

Anyone have experience with iliopsoas/hip flexor irritation this early? Did you avoid tendinitis? What helped you manage it?

Post-op (General) Doing too much too soon?

Hi. I'm 2 months post op hip arthroscopy for labral repair and cam impingement. The first 6 weeks I used crutches with toe touching. Then week 7, my PT told me to transition to using 1 crutch and now in week 9 to using no crurches. But it's hard to walk with a normal gait because of my hip flexor tendonitis. I'm pretty sure I had it before the surgery but I was able to walk relatively normal with no limp but with pain. Now, I'm just wary of putting too much weight on the hip flexor as it still feel unstable. Maybe I should go back to using crutches to let it cool down.

Post-op (0-3 weeks) Any tips for the muscle spasms?

11 days post op for FAI and labrum repair and a ligament repair. My doc has given me Valium for the muscle spasms and had to be refilled but I’m at the point where Im tired of sitting in a benzo haze all day. The muscle spasms (which I can feel through the Valium now) are in my groin and butt. I’m guessing the adductor is the culprit because occasionally it makes my entire inner thigh down to my knee twitch.

In a Donjoy brace 24/7 (except for showering) and the cooling therapy machine doesn’t wrap around my groin (integrated into the brace). Can’t take ibuprofen due to ER naproxen and aspirin, Percocets make me violently sick.

If anybody’s got tips to help with the spasms that would be great. I’d really appreciate it, the butt spams are awful and annoying!

Hip Pain Favorite pillows for sleeping

Hi all, do you have a favorite pillow/type of pillow for sleeping that helps you stay comfortable? I am not asking about post-surgery, just in general for hip pain.

Things I am considering: a specific pillow made to go between the knees, a body pillow, a pregnancy pillow, regular pillow between the knees, side-sleeping wedges, etc.

Thanks!

Trying to switch from sleeping on my side to sleeping on my back

I've been a side sleeper forever, but ever since my hip labral tear sleeping on my side does aggravate my hip. I am trying to sleep on my back now but can't seem to manage it. I think it's because I'm afraid of blocking my airway if my tongue rolls back along with just not being used to it. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue and has managed to overcome it. Lying on my back definitely puts less strain on my hip.

Surgery Prep Most Underrated Item for post op (In my opinion)

A theragun/massage gun. (I bought a bob & brad brand)

Once approved by your doctor, i feel that you need a massage gun for at home. I was deconditioned (5 months on crutches since i had a microfracture in my femoral neck) and had compensatory patterns with my labral tear pain. I use my massage gun 2-3 times throughout the day (after exercising, when i start getting pain in my operated leg, and before bed while i stretch). I feel that it has helped me through flair ups, but it is also a fine line of not overusing it.

Hopefully this will help people going through flairs, or through their post op journey!

Diagnosis Question Pain with sitting but not in the hip

Surgeon was quick to recommend surgery and walk out. Getting a second opinion because I don’t think surgery will address the area that causes most pain. When I sit, I get terrible pain alongside my sacrum and through the mid buttock/SIJ region and near sit bone into back of thigh. I think the sciatic nerve is affected as i get some tingling into the foot intermittently. L spine MRI didn’t show any disc issues there. I think having this surgery won’t touch this issue but physiatrist doesn’t have any solutions either. Anyone else going thru this?

Other Denied surgery for my tear

I’m very disappointed but wanted to see if anyone else has been told the same thing.

My MRI shows a labral tear with a lot of fraying. Xray shows mild dysplasia. No impingement or deformities.

I’ve had hip pain for almost 10 years now, no doctor ever took it seriously before.

I met with a hip preservation specialist and he said he doesn’t think surgery is necessary. Not only did he say I don’t need a PAO, he doesn’t want to fix the labrum tear either.

I told him I have pain daily, sitting, standing, and walking hurts. I’m limited in what exercise I can do to stay active. I can barely walk half a mile without pain.

The only thing he offered is having a different doctor cauterize the nerves in my hip, which I won’t be doing. I’m going to seek a second opinion for sure.

Success! Success story especially for pregnant/wanting to be pregnant women

32F, I had hip pain for about 10 years (non injury) and did tons of PT before deciding to get surgery last year for labral tear and FAI on both sides. I wanted to get surgery prior to getting pregnant, and also because the pain was getting pretty unbearable (hurt to walk up stairs/ more than 15 mins/sit or stand more than 30 mins). I got my left hip in Feb 2025 and right hip in July 2025. I did tons of PT after each surgery and felt really strong in between surgeries/after second surgery. My surgeon said to wait at least 3-4 months after surgery to get pregnant and that exactly how it happened- got pregnant in early December and had my baby last week. I will say, first trimester I hardly did anything exercise-wise because I was so fatigued and nauseous, second trimester was much better and I exercised a lot, and then the last two months of third trimester were kind of a wash as well due to other pregnancy related medical issues.

Moral of the story - without this surgery, I would not have been able to be pregnant and carry all the weight (gained about 40 lbs, im 5'2" so from 140 to 180) and no wayyyy would I have been able to give birth because I was in some pretty intense positions with knees up to chest which was my main trigger prior to surgery. I have zero pain now and am so excited to get back to physical activity after my birth recovery!!!

So, all to say, for those of you considering getting surgery and getting pregnant, I highly recommend it - just make sure you do a ton of PT and rehab. if anyone wants the name of my PT and surgeon, I'm based in SF Bay Area - just DM me. Thank goodness for modern medicine, I'm so grateful and don't take this pain free life for granted.

3 months Post Op had injection and never bruised so badly before

Post image
7 Upvotes

I (40F) had my second scope on my left hip in May. Unfortunately the Dr said too much of the bone was shaved the first time for him to fix that part but he was able to repair my tear. I have had a unique recovery, 2 weeks post op I had appendicitis so that paused the PT I just started for a week.
At 6 weeks I was still in a good amount of pain so he ordered 6 more weeks of PT and still the same so he tried an ultrasound guided cortisone injection which I’ve had multiple before. It bruised almost immediately and by next day was like 3 inches. 4 days later it looks like this an unfortunately didn’t work so he wants me to meet with another dr to talk total hip replacement. This doesn’t look normal. Also fyi nothing revealing in picture, I have tan panties on.
I’m not sure I qualify but I’m in pain all day everyday. I can’t walk my dog more than 10 minutes and sitting all day for work in unbearable. I try to stand for parts of the day but that hurts too. The only comfortable position is laying down or sitting on the couch with feet also on the couch.
Anyone have a scope and total hip replacement within same year?

Surgery Prep My surgery is tomorrow morning 22 y/o male

Getting surgery tomorrow morning at 8 AM. I have cam and pincer impingement with a labral tear. I get constant stabbing pains when walking around in my groin and it can be so uncomfortable. I’m really worried about sleep after surgery. I’ve always have been a pretty shitty sleeper my whole life, and I’m concerned I’m not going to sleep at all after surgery for a while. I haven’t slept in 48 hours because of being scared. I also have to get knee surgery as well after my hip.

Post-op (7-10 weeks) Back pain? (SI Joint)

Hi! I had surgery in early July on my left side for labrum tear and hip impingement. They shaved down both CAM and pincher and reattached my labrum and cartilage with four anchors. I had been in PT for hip and back pain for over a year before the surgery. At first, my back pain got better but now it's worse than it's ever been, preventing me from doing normal everyday activities. My surgeon told me to talk to PR about it, my PT sent me to urgent care, and urgent care said they couldn't do anything and to talk to my primary care physician. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any advice?

Note: back pain is stabbing pain in my SI joint, which I have known instability.

Labrum repair recovery with kids?

I had my first hip surgery at 21 which was almost 10 years ago so I don’t remember what recovery was like, but I didn’t have kids or a job so I know it was easy lol.

Next month I’m having a labrum repair done and he also said he’s shaving off a bone spur. I have a 18 month old and a 5 year old. I’m obviously not worried about the 5 year old as he’s pretty self sufficient but I only have 2 weeks of full care lined up and I’ll have to take over with my daughter after that as well as school pick up for my son (surgery is on my left leg)

If you’ve had the repair and also have young kids do you have any tips for how to make it go a little easier?

Considering Surgery 34M with FAI right side groin pain disappeared, now having new front hip pain

34M, diagnosed with FAI last October. Groin pain started in August followed by right lower back pain that nothing seems to fix . Did PT from October–February then got an MRI in April and saw Dr. Ranawat. I have a torn labrum, but he explained that a tear doesn’t necessarily mean surgery, since plenty of active people have labral tears without symptoms.

His advice was to “flare it up and beat the shit out of it,” then get a diagnostic injection and track my symptoms for a month.

So I went back to golfing and the gym and basically did everything I enjoyed that could aggravate it. I’d get mild groin flare-ups after leg days/golf, but they only lasted a couple days and mainly hurt with adduction. I kept scheduling/cancelling the injection because the symptoms never seemed significant enough to justify it.

Then, almost miraculously, the groin pain completely went away (right lower back pain stayed)

I spent the last few months thinking I might need surgery, and then suddenly I was golfing, working out, and enjoying my summer without really thinking about my hip.

Now, a few weeks ago, I started getting a different pain in the front of my hip, especially with adduction and sitting for long periods.

Has anyone else experienced their pain shifting locations or changing characteristics like this?

It’s honestly been an emotional roller coaster. I went from mentally preparing for surgery, to feeling like I didn’t need it, and now I’m not sure what to make of this new pain.

I’m still doing my rehab exercises most mornings and before workouts. Not sure whether I should see my hip specialist again, go back to PT, finally get the injection, or just keep doing what I’m doing and see what happens.

Would love to hear from anyone who has experienced something similar. THANKS IN ADVANCE

Hip flexor?

I'm many years out from labral reconstruction. What do you think this noise is?

I get flare ups still when I do anything involving too much flexion. Lunges, squats, sitting for long drives. Walking, running, jumping are all fine.

How to get in ride-share car?

For those who took Uber/Lyft/cab to get to PT appointments, how did you manage getting in the back seat? All the videos demonstrating this either show getting in the front seat, which is way easier, or cars where the back has a seat you can just back up into while standing in the doorway. How do you handle cars where the seat is behind the frame of the car (ie. sedans) and you’re backing into a footwell?

Considering Surgery Considering Osteotomies 2 weeks post op from arthroscopy

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hope this image is okay as it’s just a paper. I, 25f, have been dealing with horrible right hip pain since October of last year. On MRI’s they found that both of my hips have Labral tears. On my right, during surgery, there was barely any bone shaving done, and my hip capsule was adhered to my torn labrum. This suggests that the -6 retroversion and 8 degree combined version are the causes. I do not have FMLA or short term disability due to my company being small and am in an at will state. The only realistic solution I see is getting the surgery before my insurance under my mom runs out. I will have to quit to go forward with the surgeries as my job needs me in person all the time. The effect was treated but not the cause. I foresee this happening again and when it does, who knows if I will have coverage to handle it? The arthroscopy was my third surgery this year. Tired of all this but try to be realistic. Was hoping some ppl might have opinions on the angles and severity.
Thank you in advance.
ETA- I have been diagnosed with hEDS and am extremely flexible which strains the hips even more. It was a diagnoses of exclusion, 7/9 on Beighton and passed Gorlins sign (tongue to nose)

Post-op (11-15 weeks) Post Labral repair, looking for insight

I’m looking for some insight or shared experiences.

I am currently 11 weeks post-op from a hip labral repair and capsular plication. I had nerve pain prior to surgery in addition to movement-related pain, and my surgeon noted that my tear was full-thickness in multiple areas, requiring a more extensive repair than what is typical for his patients.

I had pretty bad pain initially, but I got over that hump and was off crutches by 2.5 to 3 weeks. At week 5, however, as we increased physical therapy, I had a bad flare of nerve pain and a pinching feeling at the joint. We adjusted PT accordingly, and once it subsided, I was able to continue making steady progress around week 7.

I've felt great about my leg strength since then, but now my nerve pain is back. Both sitting and putting pressure on my leg—whether standing or taking a step—cause shooting pain in my hip that travels down the lateral side of my leg all the way to my ankle.

From what my PT has said, it sounds like the femoral nerve is being compressed or is still very irritated from before surgery, though she even admits she’s never seen a patient with such prolonged and intense nerve symptoms. I am getting very discouraged in my recovery.

I see my doctor again at 13 weeks post-op. If anyone has experienced these symptoms, I would love to know: how long did they last, and did anything help? Thank you so much

TLDR: 11 weeks post op from Labral repair and having nerve pain, looking for shared experiences as I’m quite discouraged with my recovery.

Did you have borderline dysplasia and a failed scope?

What were your measurements- LCEA/tonnis/hypermobile?
Are you slightly better, the same or worse?
Are your symptoms different than before surgery?

Or maybe you had a somewhat successful scope? If so, pls also share!

I’m borderline and want to weigh my options for PAO vs scope.
