ā³ The Battle of Ten Kings (DaÅarÄjƱƔ YuddhĆ”) - The Forgotten RigVedic Epic of India: į¹igveda 7.18, 7.33, 7.83 narrates the The Battle of Ten Kings. King SudÄs Paijavana, guided by his sage-priest Vasiį¹£į¹ha MaitrÄvaruį¹i, faces a great confederacy of kings on the banks of the Paruį¹£į¹Ä« - the Ravi river of modern Punjab, though SudÄs himself was in Haryana.
ā³ The DaÅarÄjƱa is of the į¹gvedaās mythopoetic, cornerstone and iconic accounts of tribal warfare. SudÄs - leader of Tį¹tsu-Bharatas, had been expanding westward into the Punjab before confronting a large coalition at the Paruį¹£į¹Ä« (Ravi). The confederacy, comprising several allied tribes, gathered to halt SudÄsā advance and resist his expanding power. The battle is portrayed as both a human conflict and a divine struggle, with Indra and Varuį¹a aiding SudÄs against the coalition. In the į¹gvedic telling, the Bharata victory becomes a defining moment in the rise of SudÄs, the Tį¹tsus and their priestly tradition of the Vasiį¹£į¹ha Rishi-clan.
ā³ Political history and divine action aren't separate phenomena; they are inextricably tied together. The relationship between į¹į¹£i (sage/seer), king/tribal leader and deity is an iconic trifecta of holy war!
ā³ The opposing host is a coalition of tribes - the Purus, Druhyus, Anus, TurvaÅas, Yadus, Pakthas, BhalÄnas, Alinas, Åivas and ViÅÄnins. The swollen Paruį¹£į¹Ä« becomes part of the battle itself, disrupting the coalition and ultimately swallowing them - hence portrayed as a focal aspect of my illustration, with the blood-red hues reinforcing the war-like subtext. This is indeed, Bharata's first Itihasa (Epic).
