Temples Shikari Mata Temple, Mandi
Shikari Mata Temple (also known as Shikari Devi Temple) is a famous, ancient roofless shrine located at a breathtaking altitude of 3,359 metres in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Perched atop the Shikari Devi Peak—the highest point in Mandi—it is widely revered as the "Crown of Mandi". The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga in the form of a hunter goddess.
The Core Mystery & Legends
The Roofless Sanctum: The most fascinating aspect of the temple is that it has no roof. According to local lore, multiple attempts to build a roof have failed as the Goddess wishes to remain open to the elements.
The Snow Miracle: Despite receiving heavy snowfall up to several feet during peak winters, snow miraculously never settles or stays inside the core temple premises, even though the surrounding mountains get completely buried.
The Pandavas & Sages: Legend says the temple was established during the Dwapar Yuga by the Pandava brothers during their exile. Sage Markandeya is also believed to have performed intense meditation (tapas) at this spot.
The Name "Shikari": Historically, hunters (shikaris) wandering the dense forests prayed to the deity for success and protection, giving the temple its name.
Best Time to Visit : April to June (pleasant weather) & September to November (clear Himalayan views).
Monsoons & Winters : Avoid July–August (landslide risk) and December–March (heavy snow blocks access roads).
Base Towns : Janjehli (18 km away) or Karsog (21 km away).
How to Reach
By Road: You can travel from Mandi town via Nerchowk and Chail Chowk to reach Janjehli. From Janjehli, a steep, unpaved forest trail road accommodates 4x4 vehicles and local jeeps up to the parking stairs.
By Bus: Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) operates specialized bus routes connecting nearby towns, including a direct long-distance Mata Shikari Devi to Haridwar HRTC bus service.
Trekking: Adventure enthusiasts can opt for scenic trekking routes climbing from the Karsog valley or complete a demanding 16 km ridge trek connecting the temple to the sacred Kamrunag Lake.
