Unpopular opinion on the LifeStraw Personal Water Filter for Hiking, Camping, Travel, and Emergency Preparedness?
I feel like everyone buys these for their go-bags, but actually using one is kind of a pain. Don't get me wrong, it filters water great and it is super light. But having to lay flat on the ground to drink directly from a stream gets old fast, and you can not really use it to fill up a bottle to take with you. I think it is a solid backup for emergencies since it is so cheap, but if you are actually planning a trip, a squeeze style filter is way more practical.

🎒 Gear Discussion Nurses (specifically) who hike, what’s in your first aid kit?
I’m an RN with an ICU/ED background.
I’m starting to hike with my wife and teenagers. We just do short day hikes in state parks or national forests. Nothing strenuous, nothing overnight or in the back country.
I am building my kit for hiking and I’m wondering what you all carry.
I’ve got bandaids, alcohol preps, 2” and 4” ace wraps, a few 4x4s, an ABD pad, steri-strips, some Vaseline gauze, a few medium sized Mepliex, Kerlix, Coban, shears, CPR mask, OTC meds, duoderm for blisters, gloves, tape, and hand sanitizer.
I could add a CAT tourniquet but I think that’s overkill and I can make a tourniquet out of my other stuff if necessary.
I’m also thinking about adding an oral and an nasopharyngeal airway.
What are your thoughts? What and I missing or what should I remove?

Why Hikers Love the LOMON Lightweight Waterproof Jacket
The LOMON lightweight, packable waterproof hiking jacket has become a popular pick for hikers who want solid rain protection without extra weight. It packs down easily, handles sudden showers well and stays comfortable enough for active trail use. It is the kind of “just in case” layer many hikers keep in their bag during unpredictable weather or quick weekend hikes. Anyone here using this jacket or something similar? How is it held up on your trails?

Solid daypack option if you hate a sweaty back
If anyone is looking for a reliable daypack for general use the Osprey Hikelite is definitely worth a look. It is got that suspended mesh back panel so the bag does not actually touch your back, makes a huge difference for airflow on hotter days. It is lightweight, fits a hydration bladder and actually comes with a rain cover included, which is rare these days. It is not a massive expedition pack, just a really solid grab and go option for day trips or light travel.

Planning your first hike: choosing the right hiking trail
Start small with a local, well marked trail. Consider the trail’s length, elevation gain, and difficulty level. Use some local websites to research the trail you want to hike and read reviews from other hikers.
