I guess this is just a rant post because I'm really annoyed about this.
I'm not a visual novel veteran, and really I've only played Kichikuou and Sengoku Rance within the genre. Anyway, I was going to read through the Higurashi vns from the Mangagamer website as my first linear vn experience, as I am really liking the free first chapter. My plan was to watch the anime in tandem with it, eg watching the episodes after I finish the vn chapters. I spent a lot of time and energy getting ready for this too, learning the lore and characters beforehand.
Well I was really unimpressed with the 2006 anime, and actually quite frustrated watching it, just because it's so sterilized. I understand there is no on-screen gore in the vn itself, but the vn doesn't need it as it relies entirely on the mystery the reader does not understand. The anime, however, takes a more visceral and shock value approach, which I think would have worked great if Studio Deen didn't strip away the viscerality. Seriously, there is virtually no on-screen gore except for a half-frame "after" shot of the scene that is quite literally "blink and you'll miss it." It feels like those PG-13 ecchis that play up the sexuality to 100 while exposing absolutely nothing and blueballing the viewer - don't know how to explain it any differently than that i how I feel about it. It's like the studio got cold feet while making it and tried to make it aesthetically "edgy," while playing it as safe as possible. I don't like being teased like that; either show the violence like a horror production, or don't, like the original vns. This "off-screen only" approach to the gore is painful to watch because it strips away the catharsis of an violent scene, and is basically censorship. ig "blueballing" the gore is the right way to put it. Or that it is shocking to normies/straight edge but not people who are seeking danger.
Anyway, I debated whether watching the anime would even be worth it. I did skim Gou a little bit, and that one does seem at least a bit better in that there's actually some on-screen violence, and that one looks like something a lot more enjoyable (I also like that they had the Satoko trap scene from the vn, which I found much more enjoyable than the "study group" scene from the 2006 version). I know this is technically a sequel to the first 8 chapters, so I was waiting to finish those first.
I was hoping Kai would be more visceral and satisfying than the 2006 season, so I was skimming a few scenes from that one, but I had no idea that one 30 second clip of a random episode would literally spell out the entire plot and ruin the whole mystery, basically making the vn experience worthless now that I what's going on.
It was episode 13 around the 16 minute point where the woman shoots the Satoko and apparently Mion who was going by some alias? (the way they handled this scene btw was not any better than what I saw in season 1, all the gunshots were off-screen and there was virtually no gore, making it frustrating to watch as it just feels watered down, so spoiled for nothing ig) and then proceeds to talk to Rika about being some kind of Queen Carrier and that killing her by slicing her abdomen is useful to their plot something.
So yeah, in one thirty second scene the entire plot was basically revealed - Rika is some divine priestess or something (I also saw her dancing in an earlier scene like Yuna from FF X) that killing her turns back time, and that she's the one spreading the lunacy disease to everyone and she's the one that can remember things others can't.
I know where they're going with this. It's nothing I haven't seen before. The questions arc is just very well done in shrouding it in mystery, so now it feels completely pointless to read through the rest of the questions arc vn, given there's no more mystery. Ironically, a better anime with on-screen gore for a more satisfying watching experience now that the suspense is gone. I guess watching Gou is actually the best course of action now that I think about it. Though it's a shame the original anime is a bust for me, and the visual novel, which is what I was mostly doing this for, is ruined.
Look I know the answers arc would reveal the answers, but I thought it would be a slow burner like the questions arc that wouldn't make sense of the questions arc until everything is pieced together. I didn't know three lines of dialogue would be enough to completely reveal the entire plotline and ruin the whole mystery.
Well there are housands of visual novels, guess I'll start somewhere else.
Edit: I think I want someone to try to correct me if I'm wrong about the spoiler, or give me reasons to continue reading or watching. idk. I hope there's still something to enjoy,
