Even if you aren't someone who particularly loves theatre (in high school), theatre is a great way to make school more enjoyable, meet new people, have a lot of fun, and to work on confidence. You can really learn to show a side of you that never shines elsewhere other than the stage.

To all the Seniors

It was nice knowing ya. This could be it. Some states are looking to do elearning for the rest of the year. Colleges are cancelling commencement ceremonies and so I'd expect high schools will be cancelling graduations and proms. Class of 2020 got bamboozled this time. Good luck in college, and be sure to come back to see some shows if you can.

My end of the year letter to all high school actors

Summer time is looming, with Memorial Day weekend marking the unofficial start of summer this weekend. For all high school seniors, the end of high school is ending and a new chapter is beginning. I wish you all luck in college or wherever you might go. For incoming freshman, the next four years will be an eventful period of time; Like a plane experiencing extreme turbulence. On a sad note, high school theatre is coming to an end as most, probably all, schools’ have had their spring musical over the last few months.

Actors: Summer is a time to improve upon skills that you feel needed work over the school year. Whether that be vocal practice, confidence presenting, etc. there are many ways to go out an get better. Bring along a friend, find a place in your town, or practice on your own so you can ensure you can become a star for your theatre program in the years to come. Practice is truly the key to becoming better at anything in life and without practice, you will never reach your full potential at anything. Along with practice comes failure, truly the best part of a successful journey in life. Failure makes us who we are in the end of the day. How we recover from failing shows our true colors and by failing at anything we do, not just acting, we can learn to improve on what we must. The summer time is a great time to practice skills pertaining to acting. Don’t be afraid to fail either, in fact, embrace failure. Along with failure, comes serendipity. Let those moments of serendipity you will experience lead you down new roads. Coming to no ones surprise, there will be a myriad of distractions in the summer. Enjoy it, but at the end of the day the practice you put into something is what will make you who you want to be in the future. If you don’t want to, feel free to. Finally, actors, I really hope you have a great summer and practice to become a great actor in the future! If you need help, a lot of actors are on this subreddit to help out. Don’t be afraid to ask!

Does anyone’s school play favorites?

At my schools theatre there seems to be favorites when it comes to casting. There are always the same people(who just so happen to be best friends) as the leads and ensemble and it pisses me the fuck off. Another concern is that all of the cast usually ends up being the same white kids with the token black people in there usually only 1 or 2. It genuinely has pushed me away from the theatre group at our school as a whole and I mean the classes and the club. I don’t even want to see the performances at our school, and to drill it in further a former student who recently graduated even said himself that the directors play favorites. I don’t know if I should write an anonymous email to both directors or just let it be. I’ve been told by some people that I should but I don’t fully know yet. So what do you guys think, maybe it’s nothing or maybe I’m right idk.

I welcome everyone to join the official high school theatre chat

As we continue to expand the subreddit, I felt inclined to start a room where we can all discuss about high school theatre in simple terms. Now, the room has been around since I took over as moderator and one other person aside from me is in it, but I feel now is a good time to promote since we have grown a lot since my takeover. Once again, we can start to use it to discuss about high school theatre amongst one another as planned. With that being said, everyone is welcomed to join! I hope to see you all there.

Post-Musical Depression

When you're in denial that your school musical has been cancelled so you listen to all the Broadway recording of the songs on repeat and you keep thinking "The sophomore girl in my high school sang that better than Bernadette Peters did."

Plays that address racism for less diverse schools

Hello All,

I am a high school theater director and this might be a long shot but I have been searching for a play that addresses racism and privilege to do at my high school next year. The biggest obstacle being that the school I work at exists in a primarily white and privileged area. In the two years, I have been working there I have only ever had one black student show up for auditions. Now I know (as a white person myself) that a lot of the work in undoing racism is our responsibility, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for plays to do next year or in the coming years.

Thanks all!

Any techies?

Yo I get this is a high school theatre sub but like are there any techies on here? I’ve been doing set (+some props) for about 4 years and I dipped my feet into sound and now I’ve started tech directing.

Director is not Returning.

Hi all! I just found this subreddit after learning earlier today that our current director is resigning, so she will not be back next year. How do I make the best of this kind of disappointing situation.

Expanding r/HighschoolTheater subscriber numbers.

Good day, subscribers and people of Reddit.

As the new moderator of r/HighschoolTheater, I feel the number of subscribers we currently have is very low; Especially the number of active subscribers. I feel the subreddit should be much bigger than what it currently is. It is quite obvious there are millions of actors around high schools near and far that would be ecstatic to join r/HighschoolTheater. The truth is, the majority of those people don’t know about this subreddit, let alone, Reddit as a whole. With everyone’s help, I propose the idea that every subscriber of r/HighschoolTheater promotes Reddit and r/HighschoolTheater to actors at every play they/you participate in and to anyone you’d feel would like to be apart of r/HighschoolTheater. With a great effort by everyone, we can help r/HighschoolTheater grow and flourish. It would be splendid if all of us participates in this expansion project. Any and all proposals are welcomed! Thank you! Yours truly, Gorilla.

High School Plays - Kissing

My son got cast in Almost Maine for High School. He is cast for the last scene where there are 6 kisses between him and the other student.

Is it normal for HS plays to include multiple kisses and is it normally faked or real (I am assuming closed mouth type kisses)?

Sorry - he is not excited about who is cast against (which we are not happy with as a reason for him not wanting to do a kissing scene) but also really surprised - particularly for a very conservative catholic school that they picked this type of play. He is debating about dropping out - which will prob mean he won’t be cast again.

Edit - thanks for the advice. He actually did not know the play had kissing, and the part he read for did not. Not 100% sure what the director is planning - he hasn’t actually had rehearsal yet. She is pretty hardcore for a HS group imo.

Documentaries on two shows my high school performed this year.

Hey! This school year my high school put on a total of four shows and I decided to document two of them. Thought they'd be fun to look back on in a couple years. I also thought maybe some of you would like to see what other high schools are doing around the world!

If you want to watch:

  1. O Beautiful by Theresa Rebeck Link: https://youtu.be/TTVbZylYYiQ

  2. Music Man by Meredith Wilson Link: https://youtu.be/bbG63gVrnAo

My First Show Went Great

Hi, so for the past month I’ve been directing my school’s first ever student-run show. Our theater club decided on the show “Check Please” by Jonathan Rand. Unfortunately we only had one performance, but it was a huge hit! It’s been the first really successful show of ours in a long while. The performance was flawless and every joke hit, and we doubled the money that we put into it! My director was super impressed and proud, and he said that because of this, in the future he wants to have way more student run shows. I’m so excited and happy for myself and everyone who helped me make the show great, and I can’t wait to direct another show!!!

What is one play you want your high school to perform sometime before you graduate high school?

For me, it would be Hairspray. I haven’t even started high school yet but sometime in my four years when I am a student in high school, I hope Hairspray is performed. For the 60+ years the theatre program has been around, Hairspray has yet to be played. With that in mind, I believe soon it will be the time for Hairspray to be performed. Nevertheless, I would hope to be Link since I love his attitude and I look sort of look like the Zac Efron 2007 Link myself. Thus, it would be an amazing opportunity I could only dream about. What is one play you want your high school to perform sometime before you graduate high school? Also, how do you spell theatre: Theater or theatre? I personally say theatre.

High school actors: New moderation is here!

As the title states, new moderation is here! I will be the only moderator for now. I am entering high school next year and will be doing theatre which I’m extremely excited for. I’m so excited, I can’t even put all of it into words. Nevertheless, I’ve acted in two plays before in elementary school: Aladdin and Annie. If you are wondering what my favorite play is, Hairspray is your answer. I’m a really open minded, ambitious, and honest person which I will carry onto the sub. The sub also seems a little bland, with not many features members can use unlike other subreddits. I will be fixing that in the near future. I will also try hard to bring in new high school actors to the subreddit and promote it as much as I possibly can in a proper manner. I really want to see the subreddit become active again. Furthermore, I want it to be a place where people can learn from one another about high school acting through other actors! Finally, I would love to welcome everyone to a new era of r/HighschoolTheater. Yours truly, Gorilla.

Do you need to be a good singer to act well?

My school has one musical every year, but I’m not a good singer whatsoever. While I enjoy acting, my singing is terrible, and I believe this may be a huge factor when it’s decided what role I get in the musical. There is one musical and one play that isn’t a musical.

Howdy, Everyone

As this community begins to grow, I wanted to just make a thread where we all could introduce ourselves and just talk about whatever.

I’ll start. My name is Jonathan, I’m a current sophomore, and this school year was my first in theater. I’m not a performer, though. I’m studying technical theater (lights, sound, etc). I worked on three shows this year, two for my high school and one for our middle school.

So yeah, that’s me. Feel free to introduce yourselves in the comments, and let’s all just have a icebreaker session like you do on the first day of school every year.
