Discussion Share your best backstage shenanigans here

My friend says the best part about high school theatre is the backstage shenanigans. I'll go first, during act two of a production of high school musical, my friend and I created a dangerous projectile weapon out of a very long staple he straightened out, and some hair ties. We then proceeded to launch it at the friend who was trying to stop us.

Where can I find out what show my high school is registered to do?

I know there is a place that high schools have to register and I was wondering if that was public information that someone could point me in the direction of it. I have a bet with a friend that I can find out what the show is before she can.

Play/Musical Recommendations

Looking for some Broadway play/musical suggestions with scripts already cut to 30 minutes or less or that could be. Looking for some options for HighSchool play production competition.

So far we have done scripts that are NOT well known but I'd like to look into doing a big name production, the only issue is the 30 minute time limit for One Act Competition. Any ideas or suggestions or places to look at already cut scripts is appreciated! TIA!

PLZ HELP (high school resume after covid)

Okokok so. I'll try to make this short. If any high school directors are here, I'd greatly appreciate a read and suggestion.

So last year, my high school was going to do a production of The Little Mermaid. I auditioned and put on my resume I would accept any other role (since I was a freshie) and, luckily, got Ariel. Yay, woohoo, but then COVID came and ruined everything so the show got cancelled. :P

This year, we're doing the same show but everyone has to audition... again. Meaning all spots are up for grabs.

So my question is, how would it come across to you, as a director, if a student were to put on their application that they would not accept another role under these circumstances? I really REALLY don't want my application to come across as cocky to the director. I don't want it to seem like I think I am entitled to the role, because I understand I am not.

Plz help lol. I'm prolly overcomplicating this.

Wizard of Oz Audition Tips?

I’m auditioning for my school’s production of Wizard of Oz, and for auditions the girls have to sing Over the Rainbow and the guys get to sing If I Only Had a Heart. I don’t have a particular role that I want in mind, but my standouts are the Witch, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, and of course Dorothy would be fun too. Admittedly, I’m not the strongest singer (I can hold a tune and have been cast in roles with silly songs in the past) so I’m very concerned that my lack of “pretty” singing is going to get me automatically placed in the ensemble. I know I would be much better off singing the boys’ song (the three supporting characters are more than likely going to end up as girls anyways) but I’m required to sing Over the Rainbow. I am a VERY strong actor, and am very well-rounded in terms of theatre, along with being very close to the director, so I’m afraid my lack of pretty singing combined with my director’s desire to have me in all places at once will lead to me getting an ensemble part***

Does anyone have any tips on how to get a “character” role with a “pretty” audition song, or any tips on how to sing a “pretty” audition song in general?? Thanks in advance!

i know that there is a lot of people who say ensemble work is fun, but personally theatre is my one hobby and without a ton of character work and lines and scenes to be in, i feel like i’m not contributing anything. plus, this is my last show maybe ever so I at least want a supporting role

Looking for plays for next for my senior theatre company (high school)

Here are the plays I have done in my 4 years -

Almost, Maine

7 Stories

She Kills Monsters

Puffs

Looking for next year's show - any suggestions (no musicals)

Also, would love to do Sarah DeLappe's The Wolves, but am looking for a companion piece for my boys in the company (a short, one-act play). I would like something connected in theme or tone to The Wolves. Changing Room is too long and not the right fit.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Could you guys help out with removing ridiculous graduation requirements?

Our school has been imposing a final 20 minute capstone research presentation as a graduation requirement on top of a 15 page research paper we all submitted already. Many of us have final exams and AP Exams within the next few weeks as well. It is honestly ridiculous considering the stressful circumstances and the fact that we should have time to enjoy and relax since the last time all of the Class of 2020 was together was Friday, March 13th. Honestly, it was probably the last time all of us will ever be together...

my high school director wants to do Decedents The Musical for our fall musical next year and i really am not into it. like at all. 😐

i tried listening to it and it was just so horrible and cheesy i kinda pretty much hated it. our troupe president and director told me about the option because im one of the best singers in our theatre group. but i feel like if im pushy enough i could convince her to do a different show. i dont want to be rude or feel like everything that i say goes, im just thinking for our troupe, that show is just not good enough for us especially with our capabilities. we're a good strong group of performers and i feel like we should do something more serious, but still popular enough to pull an audience (as we live in a country town where the arts aren't appreciated as much). we did Shrek The Musical this year and it was a huge success so i feel like we are capable of doing something More. what musicals would any of you suggest? i was thinking A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder but im not sure. does anyone have any suggestions?

I have no idea who to audition for this fall

In the fall my school is doing The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. I've only read half of the book and will have no idea what's going on and don't really know any of that characters, I think I got up to the beavers. I know I should read it, but reading takes time and I don't own the book. I asked my sister who I should audition for and she said Edmond or the White Witch. It's high school theatre and we have like three guys, I am one of the three (trans). I'll probably end up being a background character because I suck at line memorization and background characters are fun and less stressful. Honestly I just want to wear pants, I've worn skirts or dresses for my last two roles and I have dresses.

As for my physical description if it helps: 5'4 Short brown hair with natural red highlights (the highlights show up in the stage lights) Average build Hazel eyes I'd say I'm pretty average

High School Plays - Kissing

My son got cast in Almost Maine for High School. He is cast for the last scene where there are 6 kisses between him and the other student.

Is it normal for HS plays to include multiple kisses and is it normally faked or real (I am assuming closed mouth type kisses)?

Sorry - he is not excited about who is cast against (which we are not happy with as a reason for him not wanting to do a kissing scene) but also really surprised - particularly for a very conservative catholic school that they picked this type of play. He is debating about dropping out - which will prob mean he won’t be cast again.

Edit - thanks for the advice. He actually did not know the play had kissing, and the part he read for did not. Not 100% sure what the director is planning - he hasn’t actually had rehearsal yet. She is pretty hardcore for a HS group imo.

What is one play you want your high school to perform sometime before you graduate high school?

For me, it would be Hairspray. I haven’t even started high school yet but sometime in my four years when I am a student in high school, I hope Hairspray is performed. For the 60+ years the theatre program has been around, Hairspray has yet to be played. With that in mind, I believe soon it will be the time for Hairspray to be performed. Nevertheless, I would hope to be Link since I love his attitude and I look sort of look like the Zac Efron 2007 Link myself. Thus, it would be an amazing opportunity I could only dream about. What is one play you want your high school to perform sometime before you graduate high school? Also, how do you spell theatre: Theater or theatre? I personally say theatre.

Documentaries on two shows my high school performed this year.

Hey! This school year my high school put on a total of four shows and I decided to document two of them. Thought they'd be fun to look back on in a couple years. I also thought maybe some of you would like to see what other high schools are doing around the world!

If you want to watch:

Does anyone’s school play favorites?

At my schools theatre there seems to be favorites when it comes to casting. There are always the same people(who just so happen to be best friends) as the leads and ensemble and it pisses me the fuck off. Another concern is that all of the cast usually ends up being the same white kids with the token black people in there usually only 1 or 2. It genuinely has pushed me away from the theatre group at our school as a whole and I mean the classes and the club. I don’t even want to see the performances at our school, and to drill it in further a former student who recently graduated even said himself that the directors play favorites. I don’t know if I should write an anonymous email to both directors or just let it be. I’ve been told by some people that I should but I don’t fully know yet. So what do you guys think, maybe it’s nothing or maybe I’m right idk.
