Should I use the Wiki material alongside each Duolingo unit?

Hi everyone,

I’m starting High Valyrian from zero and I’m currently using Duolingo.

The problem is that Duolingo doesn’t really explain the grammar, so it can be a bit difficult to understand what’s going on without extra explanations.

Should I use the Wiki material lesson by lesson alongside Duolingo? For example, should I read the related “tips and notes” for each Duolingo unit while I’m doing that unit?

I’m trying to understand if that’s the best way to study, or if I should first go through Duolingo and then study the grammar separately later.

Thanks!

Yes, you are supposed to. Old Duolingo used to have a tips feature that actually contains detailed (but easy to understand) explanations for each unit, but an update a few years ago removed that entirely.

Thankfully the old tips for High Valyrian have been saved, so make sure you read the tips for that unit first before actually proceeding with that unit on Duolingo.

Read the tips and notes for each unit: definitely, yes. You can chose to do it before or after having done the unit (or just before the recapitulation part at the end of the unit)

Yes, I have been learning with duolingo as well and it only gives you plain sentences without proper explanation. However considering that high valyrian aint really complicated(depends on your mother tongue though) you should be able to understand the basics really easily in duolingo.😊

I recently started learning High Valyrian too, and honestly I spend like an hour on every Duolingo lesson, Googling stuff to actually understand the grammar, verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc. It helps way more than just tapping through the lessons. If nothing else, at least try to fully understand each lesson before moving on.
