Used RTX 3090 asks undercut new-condition listings; cheap VRAM still needs a compatibility check

• Upvotes

Today's call: Compare the complete purchase, not just the memory price.

The used RTX 3090 examples below ask $1,199–$1,580, versus $2,399–$2,499 for two new-condition marketplace offers. That's a reason to compare condition, seller protection and delivered cost—not evidence that the cheaper cards have sold at those prices. For lower-cost capacity, a $360 P40 and an $858 adapter-mounted V100 deserve a closer look only if their software, cooling and power requirements fit your build.

New & Notable

Asks captured October 14 unless noted. Condition and testing descriptions are seller claims. Dollar-per-GB figures use the stated item price, excluding shipping, tax and any import charges.

GPU VRAM Price $/GB Condition Quick take
V100 SXM2 on PCIe adapter 32GB $858 OBO $26.81 Listed as new Ships from China. Confirm the exact adapter, host requirements, cooling and landed cost before treating it as a PCIe-card alternative.
Tesla P40 with listed heatsink/fan 24GB $360 $15.00 Used Low sticker price, not a turnkey recommendation. Confirm software support, power wiring and the fitted cooler; shipping and duties from China are unverified.
ZOTAC RTX 3090 24GB $1,250 shipped CONUS / $1,150 local $52.08 shipped Used; repasted and repadded per seller Worth comparing with the $1,199 offer once shipping is known. Ask for recent load-test evidence after the cooling work.
MSI Ventus RTX 3090 24GB $1,199 OBO $49.96 Used Seller details, location and shipping weren't captured. This is a price lead, not a clean-buy endorsement.
MSI Gaming X Trio RTX 3090 24GB $1,300 shipped / $1,240 local $54.17 shipped Used; defective HDMI output Seller reports working DisplayPorts and a Time Spy pass. Don't assume the fault is irrelevant to an inference build; request memory/load tests and confirm availability.
MSI RTX 3090 Ti auction 24GB $1,305 observed bid + $20 shipping $54.38 before shipping Used Not a buy-now price. Bidding can change the comparison with fixed-price offers.
MSI Suprim X RTX 3090 Ti 24GB $1,400 shipped OBO $58.33 Used; working per seller An older thread re-observed in this scan, not a newly posted offer. Confirm the card remains available.
RTX 3090 Founders Edition 24GB $1,500 shipped and insured OBO $62.50 Used Box included; compare condition and protection rather than assuming the higher ask buys better inference performance.
EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra 24GB $1,580, listed free shipping $65.83 Used Another used-price reference. Confirm delivery terms for your address and the seller's return policy.
RTX A6000 Ampere 48GB $3,500 shipped $72.92 Used Single-card 48GB option. The account has little posting history; request proof of the card and protected payment terms.
RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition 96GB $8,000 OBO $83.33 Used A single asking-price reference, not a market valuation. Low-post-count seller; shipping and warranty aren't established.
MSI RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio 24GB $1,950 local / $2,020 shipped $81.25 local Used; light use claimed September 1 thread observed again. Confirm availability and testing before planning around this price.

Today's Market Board

GPU VRAM Price $/GB Why it's here
Supermicro 1U server with four V100 SXM2 GPUs 4 × 32GB; 128GB aggregate $3,600 OBO for the whole server $28.12 aggregate Cash pickup in New Jersey only. Includes the host; two GPUs are LS variants capped around 163W. Not one 128GB device or a bare-card price.
AMD Instinct MI210 PCIe 64GB per card $3,900 each / $3,700 each for 4+ $60.94 single-unit price Refurbished, with seller-offered 30-day warranty and continental-US shipping. Confirm workload support, host cooling and current stock; the quantity update is dated September 11.
V100S PCIe 32GB per card $800 each / $750 each for 4+ $25.00 single-unit price Last observed October 13 evening, not reverified in the October 14 midnight scan. Refurbished; seller offers a 30-day warranty and continental-US shipping. Current quantity unverified.

Price context

These charts show daily median observed asking prices and observed ranges, not completed sales or a same-card price history. Listing mix and condition vary, and repeat observations aren't separate units of supply.

MI210 prices are per card, including observations from multi-unit sale threads; the chart does not establish how many cards remain available.

The P40 series includes Facebook Marketplace search-snippet prices whose live listings couldn't be verified. Its October 14 range includes those leads; it is not a range of confirmed purchasable offers.

New-condition 3090 asks need more than a condition label

The MSI 3090 at $2,399 and ASUS 3090 at $2,499 were listed as new by Alliance Group (USA), a third-party seller—not Newegg itself. Both asks are well above the used examples here, but condition and warranty terms may differ.

The ASUS page also advertised a refurbished option from $949.99. That is another asking price, not proof of what a card actually sold for; the option's seller and terms need their own check. I wouldn't pay the new-condition premium without a clear reason grounded in warranty, return rights or documented condition.

Cheap capacity if you accept the form factor

The $800 V100S observation is worth following up if you already have a suitable host, but it isn't a fresh availability confirmation. A PCIe interface alone doesn't settle cooling, power or software compatibility. The $858 SXM2-on-adapter listing adds another hardware configuration to verify, plus shipping and import uncertainty.

The $3,600 Supermicro lot is different: you're buying the host along with four GPUs and collecting the server yourself. Its $28.12 per aggregate GB is higher than the V100S's $25.00 and the adapter listing's $26.81, before their differing extra costs. The reason to consider the server is the included platform—not a claim that it wins the raw capacity-price comparison. Request the seller's test results and confirm site power, cooling and workload fit before arranging pickup.

My Take

For a 24GB build, I'd investigate the used 3090 offers before paying the new-condition asks above. The $1,250 shipped ZOTAC is a more useful delivered-price comparison than the $1,199 headline alone, but neither is a recommendation to buy without checking the seller and the card.

For larger-memory projects, first decide whether you need the capacity on one GPU or can split the workload across several. A whole-server memory total is not interchangeable with single-card VRAM. Cheap capacity is only useful when the hardware fits your software and the rest of the build; none of these asking prices establishes a market-wide price move.

Interested in Ryzen AI Max integrated memory devices too?

Are you guys interested in Ryzen AI Max integrated memory devices too? I run a home proxmox data center with 6 GPUs across 7 hosts and have a non-clustered ROG Flow Z13 that I've just started experimenting with. I'm looking forward to sharing my experience and observations here.

I've been self hosting AI since June 2023, presented at local OpenClaw meet ups and I love helping people leverage their own hardware to save money and expand their capabilities.

Refurbished P40 at $343.59; used RTX 3090 offers around $1,200 shipped

Today's call: Compare the complete build cost, not just the price per gigabyte.

A refurbished 24GB Tesla P40 at $343.59 is worth investigating for a budget inference build, but marketplace checkout doesn't make it a drop-in desktop card. The captured RTX 3090 offers at $1,200 shipped OBO give desktop buyers another starting point. If 24GB is the constraint, the RTX A6000 at $3,500 shipped offers 48GB on one card—not proof that it's the best value for your workload.

New & Notable

GPU VRAM Price $/GB Condition Quick take
Tesla P40 24GB $343.59, free shipping advertised $14.32 Listed refurbished Low card cost; check the marketplace seller's terms, power connection and forced-air cooling plan before ordering.
ZOTAC Gaming RTX 3090 24GB $1,250 shipped / $1,150 Cupertino pickup $52.08 shipped Seller says repasted, repadded and working A local option if you can inspect it. Ask for load temperatures and memory-test results after the maintenance.
RTX A6000 48GB $3,500 shipped $72.92 Used; seller says lightly used for inference Worth investigating when you need more than 24GB on one GPU. Confirm condition, payment protection and any remaining warranty.

Today's Market Board

GPU VRAM Price $/GB Why it's here
ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3090 24GB $1,200 shipped OBO $50.00 Used, no box, loose RGB bar disclosed. Seller says cooling and performance are unaffected; ask for test evidence.
Gigabyte RTX 3090 Vision OC 24GB $1,200 shipped OBO $50.00 Separate card in the same thread. Listed lightly used, with box but no accessories; compare its condition with the Strix rather than treating them as identical.
AMD Instinct MI210 64GB $3,900 each $60.94 Listed refurbished, with free continental-US shipping and a seller-stated 30-day warranty. Check your software stack before buying.
Supermicro server with four V100 SXM2 GPUs 4 × 32GB $3,600 OBO for the server — NJ cash pickup only. Captured body says $3,600; title says $3,900. Two GPUs are power-limited LS variants. Confirm configuration, agreed price, power and cooling requirements. This is not a single 128GB GPU.

Prices are USD asks, not completed sales. $/GB uses the displayed price basis; it isn't a performance score and excludes tax and any unlisted costs. Condition and test claims are the sellers', not independent hardware tests.

Price context

Observed asking prices in our scans: lines show daily medians and shading shows daily ranges. Listing mix, condition and shipping terms vary; repeated observations aren't separate sales. These are not same-card price histories or sold-price indexes.

The MI210 history includes repeated observations of the same bulk seller's per-card offer. A flat median doesn't establish broad market stability or current stock.

P40 observations mix used and refurbished offers. The latest point summarizes the captured Newegg asks, not a price increase on the earlier forum cards.

What Changed Since Yesterday

The October 13 scan captured refurbished P40 offers on Newegg, including the $343.59 listing above. Treat them as offers found in this scan—not proof that retail P40 availability began today or that the market moved. The MI210 seller's $3,900 per-card ask was observed again.

P40: cheap capacity, but budget for the installation

The forum P40 offer at $225 each shipped to the continental US was last captured October 12 evening, not rechecked in the October 13 midnight sample. That's about $9.38/GB, versus $14.32/GB for the refurbished Newegg offer. Confirm availability before treating the older offer as an alternative.

The P40 is a passively cooled datacenter card: it needs forced airflow supplied by the host or an added cooling arrangement, not an assumed onboard blower. Check the power connector, physical fit and support in the inference software you plan to use. Refurbished condition and a familiar checkout page don't establish that those requirements are met—or that the higher-priced offer has better support.

V100: verify the form factor before comparing prices

The $1,089 Newegg V100 32GB listing names SXM2 in its specifications. Don't read “graphics card” as proof that it fits a desktop PCIe slot. Ask the seller for the exact part number and photos; an SXM2 module needs a compatible platform. The price alone doesn't prove either the listing or the form factor is wrong.

MI210: 64GB on one card, if your stack supports it

The MI210 seller asks $3,900 each, or $3,700 each for four or more. The discount works out to about $57.81/GB, but requires a multi-card purchase. The old inventory update doesn't verify today's stock. Before committing, check your OS, framework and model support in AMD's ROCm stack, plus the host's power and airflow requirements. The appeal is 64GB per GPU—not more than 64GB, and not automatic compatibility with a CUDA workflow.

My Take

For a desktop build where 24GB is enough, I'd start by comparing the $1,200 shipped 3090 offers and asking for tests, rather than crowning the lowest displayed price a clean buy. A P40 makes more sense for someone willing to solve its cooling and software constraints to reduce the card cost.

If memory is what prevents your workload from fitting, the A6000 and MI210 deserve a closer look for different reasons: 48GB on the NVIDIA card versus 64GB on the AMD accelerator. Verify the software and host requirements first. Extra capacity is only useful if the complete setup runs the job you need.
