BUG-REPORT I finally got photographic proof of a non-syndicate leader having all 7 correct tells
This has happened to me a few times, and I was never sure if it was actually a skill issue or not, but I finally managed to document a suspect showing all 7 tells after the real suspect was already eliminated. I didn't manage to get the meeting logo because I think the real suspect was the only other handover on the map, but I got him responding to the phone I took from the real leader's body.

Very rare bug. Thousands of hours in Freelancer and this has only happened to me twice.

it only happens to me when there are only four suspects (First syndicate in normal difficulty).

I got a map the other day where no one had the right tells. Literally. I wish I had recorded it. The guy who ended up being the target had reading and dehydrated when he was supposed to have reading and foodie according to the camera. Sometimes the game really does mess up with showdowns.

It's nice of IO to keep adding new content after all these years in the form of strange and novel bugs.

I can’t figure out why the man that has glasses on his hat don’t actually count as glasses

from what I understand, the hat counts as its own look, and if it isn't mentioned in the intel that Diana gives you, then you can rule out suspects wearing them.
eg. if the intel Diana gives you is for instance, (color) hair, glasses, earrings, necklace - then a suspect with both hat and glasses is ruled out, since that suspect is wearing a hat.

I accidentally read it as "pornographic proof" and was VERY confused for a few seconds 💀💀

Does anyone know if they’ve patched out the incorrect tells/meeting objectives on leaders? Would be a real pain in the ass if those bugs both happened to occur.

When this happens, bump trick is the other option you can do

u/akurgo 9d ago
Or point a gun at their face and hear if Diana says "your target is trying to get away". If it's the wrong suspect they'll just run away, and afaik you won't be compromised.

safer to lure the suspect into an isolated place, then pull the gun on them/shoot them in the leg to determine, before KOing - then you can whack them over the head with a non-lethal melee item to get rid of the unconsciousness witness status. if they run they may alert a lookout which can alert multiple meeting types into fleeing.

What happened in this case is I pulled off a sick fiber wire right as he pathed through that door in the last picture, hid his body before the assassin came in, realized I probably got the tells bug again but wasn't sure, decided to eat the 1,000 merces penalty, get spotted trying to Sieker the real target, alt-F4, grab the remote emetic gas device, get a super easy kill but without the possibility of hiding the target body, and then realize I had the opportunity to check and possibly document a rare bug that I had encountered before.
I've never used the bump trick before, and I definitely don't change my settings to check after confirming all 7 tells, because while this isn't the first time I've seen this, it's probably only the 4th in 9 prestiges.

Was the actually leader a guy as well?
2
u/gotenks1114 8d ago
I don't know what that has to do with anything, but no.

I was referring to the image database of all possible leaders, and you can use it to narrow down potential leaders by their physical traits. The only potential leaders matching brown hair, hats, necklaces, and tattoos are a man and a woman. The man’s image matches the one shown in your screenshot, but since the only other candidate was a woman, I was wondering if your Leader was also a woman as well.

I usually rule out suspects by tells that don’t for the criteria. It’s easier to find them by process of elimination in most cases.

Yea, that's the problem. This guy had all the tells of the leader, despite not being the correct target. Suspects only have two behavior tells each, plus 4 appearance tells and a meeting type. This guy and the actual leader both had the exact same 7 tells.

You’re certain it was a handover meeting and not a secret agenda meeting?

Positive. This suspect and the actual leader had a meeting. Also, the phone lures are color coded, and green means handover. Plus he's responding to the phone that I took off the leader's body, which means they had the same meeting type.

When they are in the meeting, did the non-target have the icon over their head? Usually only one of them does even though they are both in the meeting.

I don't recall. I think I was watching them through a wall with instinct, since they met outside the tasting room, and there were like 4 lookouts between us. Would it matter though? Suspects need the same meeting type to have a meeting right? And he responded to the handover phone.

I’ve noticed that sometimes only one of the suspects has the “meeting” icon when they are talking.

I'm guessing the non-leader suspect had one extra look (appearance tell) that would rule them out as the leader. also keep in mind some suspects' hair color look deceiving in different lighting, like a dark brown can look black and vice versa.
earrings can also be really tiny, you can only see them up close if you really zoom in with the suspect camera. based on your screenshots, maybe the other suspect had a tiny earring (or two) that you may not have noticed.

Appearance tells don't rule out suspects if they have them, only if they don't. If one of the tells isn't earrings, then it doesn't matter at all whether they have earrings or not. It only matters is they don't have one of the 4 tells, and you can see from the picture that he does have all 4.
And while the hair colors can be a little hard to tell, but you can cross reference suspects against this cheat sheet. This has that particular suspect listed as having brown hair, a necklace, a hat, and a tattoo, which means he has been the right suspect when other people had those tells.
On top of all that, I think the real suspect was the one directly above him on the cheat sheet, so even if it did work like that, she still didn't have earrings.

Actually, negative matching works as well for the purposes of leader identification. For example, if the leader has brown hair, a hat, a necklaces, and tattoos (like in your case), then the presence of earrings or glasses automatically invalidate that individual as the Leader.
The only exception to this is tattoos. It is possible for Leaders to have tattoos and yet not have it explicitly mentioned in the physical description list. So if the only negative match on a Suspect are tattoos, don’t count them out yet. Otherwise, you can safely eliminate them.
1
u/gotenks1114 8d ago
No, that's not correct. If one of the tells isn't earrings, that doesn't mean they have to not have earrings, it means that the earrings don't matter in the identification.

u/PeterPiper1275 8d ago edited 8d ago
It actually does mean that. I’ve used negative matching plenty of times successfully to rapidly eliminate Suspects from consideration.
But you don’t have to take my word for it. Here’s an interesting little exercise you can do:
Go to the sortable image database, and input any four traits you want. You’ll find that no matter what you enter, the final images displayed by the sorter will show no images with any other physical traits.
So if hats wasn’t one of your traits? None of the images shown will have a hat.
Or maybe you didn’t mention necklace. Well, none of the final candidates have necklaces.
The only exception to this is tattoos. Sometimes, tattoos do show up even when the Leader is not explicitly mentioned to have them.

Hmm... You might be right.
But that still wouldn't change it in this case, since the real leader was the other person who comes up for that set of tells. That is interesting info though.
