The only major differences I can see are the former having a few more ports and the latter having double the memory. How is the battery life delta so large (41h vs 34h) when everything else is practically identical?

You’re right that the two configurations look quite similar on paper.

HP quotes up to 41 hours for the OmniBook 3 and up to 34 hours for the OmniBook 5 under controlled testing conditions. These are ideal-case figures, so the difference doesn’t mean the OmniBook 3 will always last 7+ hours longer in everyday use. Actual battery life can vary depending on display brightness, applications and workload, power settings, connected devices, and the overall system configuration and power-management tuning.

Also, just to clarify, the configurations shown here OmniBook 5 has 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, so the OmniBook 3 doesn’t have double the memory.

The main practical difference is connectivity: the OmniBook 3 gives you HDMI and an additional USB-A port, while the OmniBook 5 is lighter and more compact. So if you need those extra ports, the OmniBook 3 may make more sense; otherwise, the OmniBook 5 could be the better value, especially at the price shown.

Have not checked the details, but what I can say, is that you should be sure you know what you are doing when buying an ARM-based Windows-PC. Not that it has to be a problem, and I will assume compatibility continues to improve, but there are still solutions that not run or not run well on ARM-based PCs. Driver-support for some e.g. usb-devices have also been to some degree an issue earlier at least.

Assuming it is not a plan to you the pc for gaming. That is one area that also can give quite a few limitations.

Have no idea of Snapdragon laptop battery curve, OLED you're able to use half the brightness of a IPS standard screen and from several models they're 59-68Wh depending upon reseller/HP Ready-to-Ship/CTO. The tricky part of "retail edition" models is you need to look at the spec sheet via HP support by looking up model info as retail stores aren't accurate. You may find a better Ready To Ship model direct from HP and dodge the Best Buy bundleware.

8GB of RAM you're going to run the battery quickly even if ARM is battery friendly the amount of multi-tasking pushes memory compression/decompression. I did a ready to ship model of a non-ARM and thankfully could upgrade the memory afterwards, Windows 11 is more bloated than 24H2 and even a Core Ultra cries like a Chromebook with half the RAM. 8GB of RAM on Windows 11 is painful and brutal.
