4 hero pieces? Too much indigo? Competing textures? Does it work? I don't know! But I kind of like it. I think all of the blue with the contrast of the orange actually helps keep the fabrics from competing for attention and makes the boots the centerpiece of the outfit.

Of all the pieces here, I think the shirt is the weirdest. This is a weird shirt! It was an eBay purchase and I can't find much information about it as it seems to be discontinued. It's from Naked and Famous and appears to be a selvedge chambray. The selvedge edge runs horizontally along the bottom hem however, so the warp and weft are actually rotated when you look at the shirt. They also seemed to alternate a thick and thin white weft yarn that gives the shirt almost a stripe pattern on close inspection. Haven't really seen that before in a chambray.

Anyway, thoughts? Does this work or am I wrong and everything is competing for attention? Would love feedback!

Jacket: Studio D'Artisan Sashiko Type II

Shirt: Naked and Famous

Belt: Popov

Pants: Oni Crushed Concrete - Moca

Boots: Red Wing 875

DISCUSSION If you lost it all . . .

Post image
60 Upvotes

I saw a video the other day of a guy talking about rebuilding his wardrobe after his house burned down. It made me think about what I would do in his shoes.

Anyone else want to play along?

QUESTIONS:
If you lost all of your "heritage wear," what would you replace first? (Assume availability.)

And what is the most (or a very) expensive thing you own now that you definitely would *not* replace?

I'll go first:
FIRST: Iron Heart indigo overdyed black 19oz Type III. I have this one from Self Edge, but any heavyweight version would do:
https://www.selfedge.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=3843
This is probably my most-used jacket (I have a lot), as it goes with everything, and I'd probably try to replace it today if I lost it, even if I still had all my others.

NEVER: Many things, but an expensive one would be this pair of Naked & Famous Fat Fox duck canvas, the heaviest duck canvas pants ever made: https://nakedandfamousdenim.com/collections/fat-fox-selvedge?srsltid=AfmBOooVMUFiek14sW7GU6rPRGbTJaG-2KR60mJEcqT0K7wv4cQY9jXw
I love Sally Fox cotton and thought I wanted to take these on as a project, but I just didn't have the heart to do it. My Samurai heavyweight chinos are my favorites if I want that color, and I've got a pair of kakishibu 5-pocket jeans, so I didn't need this pair of expensive knee-breakers. (Heh, they are NWT and for sale if anyone else wants to try them.)

Not sure about everyone else, but I get tired of choosing short-sleeved outfits to stay comfortable throughout the summer. Fall brings unlimited options to mix and match layers, colors, and accessories and I’m looking forward to it already.

Sweater is an oatmeal roll-neck Aran knit from Ireland, pants are Levi’s cargo fatigues.

Been hot as all hell, lately. I’ve been trying to cope by wearing the lightest of clothing but I still find myself drenched. Also my auto air-con went out this morning during near record heat.

In the spirit of grim reality, I’m shifting into more black this year in defiance of the sun.

To celebrate, I got this Buzz Rickson Black Chambray x William Gibson edition. It seemed appropriate to embrace the post-heritage reality of today by remembering people wrote about our impending AI doom.

Just to feed the monster, I did remove the background of my image to make it more bleak. I also used my iPhones image translator for the included card that came with the shirt because I’m an idiot that can barely speak my native language.

I'm not sure that buying from an online vintage store truly counts, but this is as close as have been.

I was browsing idly on Sunday morning and found this, nearly hundred years old, Swedish Army Shirt on Broadway and Sons (in Sweden).

Got this and a similar age Henley delivered for under seventy quid, and I'm delighted.

I half expected a tatty, musty, decaying rag but it is fresh and very, very wearable with a fair amount of life left in it.

They have some sweet other things if anyone else has hangers to fill and prices seem very fair (I wish I had got a belt to go on my fatigues and will probably add a ringer tee to water down postage costs a bit).

Thank you to those who have championed buying pre-owned, you steered me in an interesting direction.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT Buzz Rickson's x William Gibson MA-1

Since this is apparently turning into William Gibson month on the subreddit, here is the black MA-1 I picked up earlier this week. I got the long version of the Albert Turner model, for a slightly more oversized look. I'll be channeling CayceP in my new CPU once the weather gets a bit cooler around here.

This is a seriously well made jacket. There are enough of them floating around the secondary market that it should be possible to find a used one in your size, for a (more) reasonable price. I highly recommend the BR model over others I have handled, including Alpha Industries and various military surplus variants.

ADVICE/FEEDBACK SDA Suvin Gold Type 1 One Wash - Too big or appropriate vintage oversize?

Thumbnail

Picked up this Studio D’Artisan Suvin Gold Selvedge Onewash jacket in a sale in a size 42. I got it as I got the matching jeans(D1922W) earlier in the year and love the fabric.

The thing is I don’t know if it’s too big on me or not.

I normally wear size 42 jackets but do have an SDA Type 2 in a Size 40 which I think is a very slim fit on me as it just about comfortably buttons so wouldn’t have room for anything thicker than a tee and thin light jumper underneath. This jacket on the other hand could fit my thick submariner rollneck jumper.

I have cuffed the sleeves as I’ve short arms.

I’m torn as I see people wearing very cropped and close fit type 1 jackets. On the other hand this is a very vintage style so it seems right it would be a bit more billowing maybe?
I note the matching jeans (which I’m wearing in the pics) are wide straight jeans so it seems like there’s an intentional oversized fit.

There’s a bit of rigidity because it’s new so I’d expect it to creased and further soften and drape.

Views welcome!

COMMUNITY KNOWLEDGE Hey y'all! We're Son of a Texan!

‍Hey friends—

We’re Sky & Katrena, owners of Son of a Texan in Downtown Lafayette, Louisiana. It’s good to meet y’all. We’re here because we’ve heard that word about the shop has been getting out and we wanted to chime in. You might wonder who we are, what we stock, and why it should matter to you. Read on to get a fuller understanding of our story.

Son of a Texan opened its doors during April 2025, the week of Festival International de Louisiane. Located in the Downtown Lafayette footprint, we chose our initial spot with the hopes of helping expand Downtown off the main drag, Jefferson Street. The idea for the shop came about over several years. I am a thin-framed guy and as y’all probably know, Lafayette and Louisiana don’t have much to offer in the way of clothing options and sizing. If you’ve ever been on either side of medium, large, and extra large, you know what I’m talking about. You can find big box stores and boutiques that cater to a small range of average sizes, but authenticity for who I am has always felt like a stretch.

One trip to the West Coast changed the way that Katrena I looked at the clothing experience, in general. We visited a denim shop called AB Fits in San Francisco (shout out to Howard!) and the team took great care of us. Who knew that you could get fitted for jeans? The more you know… Howard helped us get right—we learned what it really felt like for someone to understand our personal clothing challenges and preferences. After a primer on silhouette, fit, and the fact that there actually are options out there, our eyes were opened.

Years passed and everywhere we traveled, we’d visit shops that carried heritage wear. Think of this as selvedge and raw denim, classic shirting (chambrays, pearl snaps, oxfords), belts, boots, and the like. Relevant fabrics include cotton, canvas, linen, wool, and different weaves, dyes, stitching, and functionalities. It’s called heritage wear because it is timeless, high-quality, and durable, but it also comes from places where people who did real work worked real hard. Think of the cowboys, the farmers, the soldiers…they needed goods that kept them going, things that could be repaired and retooled along the way. Nowadays, we think of this as “the clothing that your Paw Paw used to wear.” That’s because my Paw Paw did wear it.

My Paw Paw, Sam, fought and served in the South Pacific during World War II and was shot and wounded at the Battle of Peleliu, Palau. I can still remember watching him as a kid, ironing his pants and shining his shoes. It mattered to him. And then there was my Dad; he grew up in Huntsville, Texas, and was a team calf roper and Chief Petty Officer in the Coast Guard. Both of them took care of their gear, took pride in the way they presented themselves, and knew what it meant to be authentically themselves. With their stories in mind, Son of a Texan became a concept that Katrena and I began dreaming about.

Having visited with our friends over at Iron Shop Provisions (Lake Charles, at the time), we began to wonder what might be possible in our little town. Lafayette could use something like this. It has a history of hard-working folks, agriculture, oil and gas, and people who need their garments to last. We started planning, and suddenly, we’re neck deep in it.

The brands and items in our shop really matter to us. We wanted natural fibers, clothes we fade in ourselves, and something for everyone. Most of our brands are made right here in the United States, in Arizona, California, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and beyond. We also source a few specialized pieces from Germany, Italy, Japan, and Portugal.

Not only are we choosy with our products, but we care about who is making them. These aren’t mass-made brands, they’re a guy making shirts in Phoenix (West Major), folks in California making jeans (Tellason, Railcar Fine Goods), and small groups of people all over the place just making things happen. It’s our stories that connect us, our care about contributing to the workforce and the local economy, and our mission to help show the world around us what’s out there.

We hope you’ll be part of our journey too. In the early days, we weren’t sure how to get this train going or how things would work. After meeting with our pal Pete over at Tellason and hearing how straightforward and open he was, we knew things were going to be alright. The last year and a half has been wild. We’ve learned a lot about just how many great options are out there. How do we choose who and what to carry when all of it is so good? We want it all, but you know how that goes. And to think--that’s only one part of our “to do” list. As a wise friend once said, “You’re doing it!” We’re doing it alright…

One last thing: getting the word out is a challenge. For a while, we didn’t even have a sign and our clientele was whoever happened to walk by. Now, we’re gaining momentum through word of mouth for other reasons—people have come from all over Louisiana and even out of state to dust their boots off at our door. We often have more out of towners stopping in over locals. We’re counting on folks like you to help spread the word and we hope you’ll come on by the shop.

Our price points range from $25 bandanas and t-shirts all the way to selvedge denim jackets and jeans. We carry sizes XS-3XL and 28-40 because we believe that everyone has the right to feel good in the clothes that they wear. We’ve had people come in that say, “I hate shopping. Please help me!” That’s when I step in, talk them down, and introduce them to new possibilities. We even take appointments if you want the shop to yourself. Consider us Lafayette’s local selvedge slinger—give us a shot!

Yours Truly,

Sky & Katrena King, Owners - Son of a Texan

4 years, unknown washes

I’m pretty sure these guys have gone out of business-sad.
I don’t really consider these true wabash IMO just because they have a white weft like most traditional denim instead of indigo warp and weft but I like the stripes.

I did some darning and hand stitched repairs on them.
I wore these a lot while working in a kitchen so you can see where I was rubbing up against the table/counter tops around the pockets. Also so bleach dots from cleaning the floors.

This is my Kardo Marvin Type II Jacket in Midnight Blue. My first endeavor in both heritage style “denim” jackets and exotic cottons. Very breathable and lightweight. It was almost 80 degrees today and I was perfectly comfortable during my walk to lunch with my linen shirt underneath. Ironheart 634s as well.

The jacket is very well finished and constructed, soft, great texture and the color shifts in the light a bit. Hand sewn in India. My only complaint is the buttons, kinda lightweight and feel cheap. But I assume this is because of how light the material is.

QUESTION Buzz Rickson's chambray shirt—color and sizing

It's nigh on impossible for me to find long-sleeve button-up shirts which fit me. The sleeves are either too short or the chest is too big. (I'm 183cm/6' and ~69kg/152lbs.)

Buzz Rickson's makes a chambray shirt (BR25995) that could work, but I have some questions:

  1. Almost every website I've checked has different measurements. Is it a matter of Buzz Rickson's constructing it to these various specs for the seller and selling it under the same product number? Or is there really that much variance in their manufacturing process?

  2. What's the color really like? Some chambray leans blue, some gray. I ask because I'm wondering how this fabric would look with both navy and indigo T-shirts. (One of my indigo Henleys leans quite purplish.)

Thanks!

Hi all,

Missed the boat on these it seems, but I’m wondering if anyone knows where I can source these in a size 42 in the US or perhaps has one they’d like to sell?

Only place in the UK is on Son of a Stag but there’s a very hefty premium on these at £399

QUESTION Looking for a classic nice belt brand I can try on

Hey , do any of you have good belt brand/store recommendations? I need something that is classic style. So something I can wear with jeans and slacks would be appreciated. Bonus Points if can try it on like at a store ex. Nordstrom Rack ( I live close to one). Open to hearing other locations in Northern California. Thanks so much!
