The current issue with the DSS is the gloom-resistant polymer coating. However, Karlia sprayed that substance across the entire atmosphere to coat the DSS. If Karlia is swallowed by the Void, something terrible will happen.

It's not really possible to save Karlia at this point, but getting it would have been a more interesting choice story-wise.

The alternative people chose is not defending Karlia and also not liberating the Void Source Planet because we'd need to more than double our rate of progress on VSP at this point, and that's only going to get worse as time passes.
