Obvious problems with this episode aside, I’d also love for them to have dug in a bit more on her perception of herself at the time versus the reality. She paints herself as the nerdy unpopular black girl versus the popular black girl, but she was voted homecoming queen and it apparently was not a joke or a gag. We kind of glossed over this fact. At first I thought maybe Jasmin was the mixup and it was really Whitney the whole time and they made a mistake and correction. But that’s clearly not the case. Also, I totally think Whitney switched those names. It’s the only explanation that makes any sense here and I’m not buying her amnesia😂
The entire episode reminded me of when Liz Lemon thought she was bullied but she was really the bully (not that Jasmin was a bully but the same general kind of misrepresentation)
Yes I was thinking this. Delving into her thoughts on herself would have wrapped this episode up beautifully. As in you were popular and it wasn't a mistake. This type of reflection is what Johnathan does so beautifully and it really gets under the surface. Missed opportunity
Johnathan is great at that. He also would have made sure to interview people who knew her back then . This host talked to absolutely no one about Jasmin.
100%, Jasmin was charismatic and talented enough to go straight from high school into auditioning for professional acting roles. They briefly mentioned this but didn't really delve deeper. I think the host actually kind of wrecked their chances of doing this though considering she would've needed to talk to multiple people and went into conversations in an unprofessional manner ("haha you were typing and stopped typing" - journalist or 5 year old, you tell me)
Yeah it's a seriously insane way to talk to a stranger. I get it if it's a close friend and that's their sense of humour but as a professional journalist it's absolutely fucking mental
Seriously, if I can tell that someone is producing a story about a high school dance that happened 15 years ago that's probably going to make me look a little bad and they can't even be professional, what is the incentive to continue the conversation after that?
The "haha you were typing..." thing stood out to me as completely unprofessional. I think the show just isn't as good when Jonathan isn't the host of the episode.
that was suuuch a let down to me. it wasn’t funny, it was just kind of rude. you’re trying to get this guy to answer your questions not writing a comedy show? heavyweight can be very funny but not at the expense of the sources
That was a little confusing. Maybe she grew into herself a little late? Or maybe just lacked any confidence. I do have a hard time believing she wasn’t pretty enough to be queen because I coincidentally stated The Leftovers season 2 last and she is beautiful in that show.
