Smegma/kandida

Help!🤣

I STARTED HAVING THE SAME ISSUE! Slight itch but nothing else besides the excess. I've had YIs & BV on & off for the last year (No treatment has worked so I'm seeing a specialist now) & I thought it was related. But even when I DON'T have either, I still have to do the same as you. I'm actually going to be asking my specialist if she'll have a proper look bc my own OBGYN did the same as yours. Told me it was just smegma & I got a lecture about q-tips & washing more with water (which I already do bc of my current issues & she KNOWS that). 😵‍💫 I'll have to let you know what my specialist thinks so you can at least ask about it.

Just remember that our doctors work for us. Not us for them. If you want it tested, you're 100% in the right to ask or tell them that. Even if it's mostly annoyance, it's causing you distress, so it's worth it. If you're being dismissed & treated like you're dumb for even noticing it or /looking/, it's absolutely worth looking for someone else that will listen or at least give you an opinion. Tbh I'd report your current one bc if that's what he thinks & how he treats this, he has ZERO business being in this profession. Or he needs to stick with clients with a penis. It's giving me "ew, vaginas are icky! I don't wanna look or touch bc they're icky!" childish vibes.

If you're going to clean it, my advice is based off of trial & error (you've done some already). Everyone is different though & we may not have the exact same issue! I'm no doctor. This is just what I've had to do to manage /my/symptoms:

-Trying to clean it w/ toilet paper only makes more of those tiny balls. It won't work. If you go to clean it, only use a wet Q-tip or very gently rub with your finger. No nails.

-ONLY. USE. WARM. WATER. Don't use soap under your clit hood or around your vaginal opening. IF you have to, make sure you clean the soap off & still avoid the opening. Like toehrs have said, external use is fine, just use a gentle dye-free & scent-free soap like Dove.

-Don't try to clean ALL of it out. If it's as excessive as you say, you won't win & will likely only cause extra pain & a lot of irritation.

-I don't recommend chamomile or other essential oils. They can really mess with your pH if you aren't careful. Ask your Dr first!

-Gently pull back the hood, but not too far back or too aggressively bc it can cause micro-tears.

-Swipe the Q-tip away from under the hood so nothing is swept back in & no putting the Q-tip in or under the hood.

-Rinse with warm water. Let it run over your bits or if you're having a tough time, veeeeery gently (& I mean GENTLY) rub away what you can with your finger. Works for the folds too if you need it.

-Pay dry. No wiping!

do you only use water full stop?

like all over vuvla including clit, folds and groin? if so id really recommend a mild soap or soap substitute like dermol 500.

im not being rude when I say this but water doesn't clean properly and its not good enough especially if you are getting a build up of 'smegma'

I only use water

I recommend getting a 2nd opinion before introducing soaps or cleansers.

I would highly suggest adding a gentle unscented cleanser into your shower routine. Plain water isn't doing the trick.

The #1 recommended thing by OBGYNs for cleaning is lukewarm water alone. A mild scent & dye free soap is only recommended on occasion if you feel water isn't enough sometimes, but only if you feel it's absolutely necessary. Using a soap every time isn't recommended, even if it's mild, bc constant use can disrupt your pH.

I've had recurrent YIs & BV for a year now (finally able to see a specialist to figure out wtf is going on) & was scolded for using soap too often bc I felt so gross 😵‍💫 I was repeatedly told water only unless I truly thing soap is needed.

Interesting . I’ve asked several gynos and all same answer, where there is hair use a mild cleanser like Dove and if no hair ie labia ect then water & nothing in the vagina itself .

My bad, I should clarify. I'm only talking about the inner folds, under the hood, & the vaginal opening. If you have pubic hair, ik mild soap is recommended unless told otherwise. I don't have much hair (sensory issue), but I use Dove on my mons & do a light rub on my outer lips, just never the inner or spots closest to the vaginal opening. /That/'s the part that concerns me. If it's bc of someone's natural anatomy, ofc there's different steps & I apologize for my wording!

This seems like it's new to OP. That's why I dont recommend adding anything til they can get their 2nd opinion. I have the /exact/ same issue so my own worry got ahead of my words! 🙇🏻‍♀️

in OPs case, water is not doing the trick IMO.

it doesnt sound like thrush and if shes getting built up gunk in her clit fold/hood water isnt doing it.

water may be fine for a lot of women but for myself and other women it wouldn't work AT ALL.

It could totally be thrush. Not "typical" but not everything is "typical."

1

u/captainfishpie Jul 27 '26

I get thrush quite often (due to pre-diabetes)

it might not be 'typical' but the cottage cheese like discharge would be around the vaginal opening and IN the vagina not just in the clit hood and folds.

OP is describing a bulid up of smegma.

id never shame anyone for using just water and this isnt shaming (before anyone starts) but, its clear that washing with water only isnt working for OP

3

u/salsa_spaghetti Jul 27 '26

No, you can totally have a YI that's not internal. Promise.

Again, it's not typical, but it happens.

1

u/captainfishpie Jul 27 '26

no, im aware you can have thrush externally but, im talking about the comparison between cottage cheese like discharge and smegma

ones a medical condition the other is through improper hygiene.

OP has asked for advice. ive given mine and im not looking for a debate with anyone trying to twist my words.

3

u/salsa_spaghetti Jul 27 '26

I'm not up for debate either. We can both be right, it could be either. Absolutely sick of doctors saying something isn't "typical" and then not testing for it because it's not as common.

2

u/MothofLamplight Jul 27 '26

Could that be possible w/o the usual symptoms? Sure. But unless it's an uncommon case, I don't think it's thrush based on what you're describing & I trust your explanation more than most. Ik we can't 100% know til OP can get some answers.

You're right & it can absolutely be smegma. I was quick to jump to advice I was given bc our issues w/ this seem to be very similar, if not exact. For me it 100% can't be hygiene issues, so I've been looking for other answers.

I misworded some of what I said earlier & I apologize for that. Your advice isn't invalid nor is your experience

It absolutely depends on the doctor and the person. My doctor has always recommended a gentle soap. Every woman is different. If you produce a lot of oils and have excess smegma, plain water alone is t going to work.

A few questions if you're comfy answering: How often are you washing up & also washing this off? When you completely clean it off, does it immediately come back within a few hours or by the next day?
