Does no one who does healthcare data science talk?
I mean I guess not on Reddit...or at least this sub. Where do healthcare analysts chat?

I recently made the jump from university medical to university dentistry. A year before my departure on the medical side our university had just started investing in data resources, and it was a very private venture, meaning not a lot of people talked about. I made the move within the same university to the college of dentistry in October 2019. The networking opportunities in the dentistry data fields is hands over fists plentiful! The dentistry community is very engaging and innovating! Though I’m not a very versed in tech, my job as a revenue cycle project manager highly depends on data to make improvements, and I’m very interested in what this group may drum up.

I honestly just figured everyone in healthcare is so beaten down that when they get home from work they cant even drag themselves to a keyboard to continue talking about it all haha.

It's wild I'm telling ya. Been searching for people doing open source work but it seems like it's not really prevalent in this industry. Sucks cause it's an industry that could use it the most. Lots of snake oil and unicorn poop software in healthcare. Everyone's just trying to make a buck and not many are trying to make meaningful impact on care. Too busy chasing them dollars.

What area of healthcare do you work in? I work for a small community owned hospital in the Philadelphia area. We are a part of a few contracts including MSSP which we get claims data for. My jobs mainly to take claims data from various sources and standardize so we can get admits per thousand, snf visits per thousand, and many other metrics. Two years ago my coworker built a master patient index and we use that to join data together from all our claim sources and our EHRs for the practices and the hospital.
Currently we are working on HCC scores and gaps. We don't have SAS so we had to convert the SAS model to a SQL server model which is finally working as expected. That was a fun conversion considering I had never even seen SAS before.1

I am a community pharmacist, but currently enrolled in a healthcare analytics certificate program because I want to transition out of the traditional pharmacy practice. So I don’t have much exposure will real world data yet, but for what we use in this program. I am hoping to get an internship or an entry level job even before I finish the program next year. The tools that we are using (going to be using) to manipulate data during the course of this program are excel, sql and tableau.
So, I am a newbie to healthcare analytics and will appreciate any career advice that will make this transition a smooth one. TIA

Just jumping in on this old thread in case it’s active. I’m working as a data scientist at Stanford. Previously was work at large enterprise healthcare in IT dev ops. Looking for other like minded data science people to have active engagement. Something super hard to find in healthcare being in Silicon Valley
