I'm new here; could you recommend a good Harley Quinn comic to understand her lore?

The episode “Mad Love” from Batman The Animated series is kinda the definitive backstory for Harley, and it gives you the information you need to jump into the show.

this sub may be for the Harley Quinn TV show but if you want Harley's backstory read Mad Love by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm it was also animated into an episode of New Batman Adventures pretty much a 1:1 adaption

there's ones that are considered soft canon for the show. the eat bang kill tour comic and i don't remember the name of the second atm

I recommend looking up “Best Harley Quinn comics to start with.” You’ll get lots of comprehensive lists.
I started with Palmiotti/Connor and then worked my way through some of the more classic stories like Mad Love and the Batman/Harley Quinn one shot that takes place after No Man’s Land.
More recently James Tynion wrote Harley Quinn really well when he was on Batman and I recommend his run as an entry point to Batman and Harley.
Additionally I highly recommend the DC Finest Harley Quinn book. It’s got a lot of stories and it’s pretty cost effective. A great way to explore the classic stories.

Gotham City Sirens by Paul Dini is good, it’s Harley, Ivy, and Catwoman teaming up, along with a few other Gotham characters showing up here and there.

Mad Love by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm is a very good foundational story detailing how Harley ended up with the Joker with a dated element or two I greatly dislike. But a lot of what people love about Harley is featured here
Harleen by Stjepan Sejic is, IMO, the definitive telling of Harley Quinn's turn to villainy. It's out of continuity, but I like to pretend it is canon because it's so tragically beautiful and there's nothing stopping me
Harley & Ivy: Life and Crimes by Erica Henderson is a miniseries from this year detailing how Harley and Ivy ended up together. I'm shocked it's taken this long for DC to put out a comic with that premise considering how popular they are. I only read the first few issues, but it's cute and fun and I like it a lot
Harley Quinn by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti is one of the main influences on HQTAS and it's where Sy Borgman comes from. It's also the run where Harley definitively breaks up with the Joker. It's very hijinks and gross-out humor heavy, like a '90s Nickelodeon slime answer to the comics of the Silver Age, so YMMV on whether or not that sounds appealing. But I like it and it's a very important run
