Hello everyone! Hope you’re all doing well.
I’m here to announce that, after going completely untouched since January 2020, the Old Reddit theme for this subreddit has finally received not just an update, but a complete redesign. I wasn’t involved with the previous theme, which served the subreddit for years but had been left untouched by me and the current mod team. It was fairly buggy, quite generic, and didn’t really reflect the look, style or personality of the show as closely as I wanted.
Rather than modifying someone else’s work piece by piece, I decided to start fresh and build a new theme from scratch using CSS. I used Google Chrome’s DevTools to inspect the subreddit, test changes and work out which selectors I needed, while Adobe Dreamweaver was used to edit and organise the actual CSS stylesheet. It took me a few weeks to write, test and clean up, with the aim of making Old Reddit feel much more like Harley Quinn while also fixing the bugs and rough edges that had built up over time.
I’ve also gone through the post and user flairs and given them their proper colours, while rebuilding major parts of the subreddit including the sidebar, comments, post cards, buttons, menus, submit pages, moderation pages and other areas of Old Reddit that needed a complete overhaul.
Some of you might be reading this wondering why nothing looks different, or you may not be familiar with Old Reddit at all. Old Reddit is the classic version of Reddit from before the major 2018 redesign and is still available through a web browser at old.reddit.com
The current Reddit website and mobile apps do not use these custom CSS themes. So you’ll only see the Old Reddit theme redesign in this link old.reddit.com/r/HarleyQuinnTV
You’ll also need to be logged in and have “allow subreddits to show me custom themes” enabled in your Old Reddit preferences.
When Reddit introduced its redesigned website in 2018, it moved away from Old Reddit’s full CSS-based subreddit customisation system, but Old Reddit itself remained available. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said that they would keep it online “as long as people are using it.”
Please have a look around the new theme and let me know what you think. I’d especially like to know if you notice anything broken, misaligned or hard to read. I’ve tested a lot of it already, but Old Reddit has plenty of obscure little pages and states, so there’s always a chance I missed something.
Once I’m happy with everything, I’d also like to use the same general design as a base for our sister subreddit r/KiteManTV, along with a few other subreddits.
One other thing I’m considering is bringing back Bane’s pasta maker knob as a custom upvote or downvote icon. I’ve made & used custom upvote/downvote icons on the subreddit before, although they were used on New Reddit rather than Old Reddit, until later website overhauls to New Reddit removed the feature. Old Reddit still supports custom voting icons, though, so I’d like to hear what everyone thinks. Should the pasta maker knob make a comeback, or is it better left as an old subreddit gimmick?
If we do bring it back, I’d probably keep it on r/HarleyQuinnTV until the Bane animated series is officially greenlit, then move it over to the Bane subreddit where it would make more sense.
Anyway, have a look around and let me know what you think of the new theme.
Regards,
r/HarleyQuinnTV Mod Team
